What a good one Tony. My mother-in-law came from Fulham. I came from down the Uxbridge Road towards Southall. My sister and husband lived in a flat near Cadby Hall, sorry police flats. Both had been in the Job. Bent coppers are the lowest of the low. His "friends" were probably in the funny handshake club as was he. A friend of my sister's actually was caught over the limit, not with any harm caused, and was suspended and had certain stipulations put in place before he could return. He wasn't far from putting in his papers and was encouraged to do so. My family were totally clean and detested bent coppers. Would enjoy the return journey. Don't recognise anything anymore of Hammersmith. Thanks Tony.

That junction where Goldhawk Road meets Shepherd's Bush Green used to have a rght turn lane. The No 11 bus, which used to come out of Shepherd's Bush Wells Road (right turn at the pub/coffee shop) turned to go down to Hammersmith without having to circumnavigate the Green.

I'm an American and I starting thinking about your story and my mind is seeing a episode of "Dixon of Dock Green",,, I have become a great fan of older British TV programs when I gave up on TV all together 8 yrs ago. I find it funny how similar our lives were growing up in the 1980's with an ocean an culture dividing us. I remember in Europe/UK during that time nuclear weapons protest was in most peoples mind but in the US I never saw much of that type of thing (in the mid-west anyway), thanks for the video, I enjoyed listening.

Loved the Quadrophenia locations on the video. Know a few myself. The dancehall scene was shot in a building which is now a gym in Southgate, the cafe they hang out in was on the top of Essex Road and Upper Street in Islington. Amazing what noddy used to try and get away with back then... they all seemed to think that having that badge and warrant card made them invulnerable... It was the same here down on the South Coast, as something similar happened to a couple of friends of mine, but also involving an ambulance on call... Ambulance driver was following a traffic unit, which clipped a cyclist, ( my mate), who then knocked my other mate off... traffic unit disappeared, leaving the ambulance to clear everything up. Problem was that both vehicles were on route to a crash up on the A27... two other ambulances had to attend, along with another police car and the fire brigade.

Interesting the styling on the rear end of that red VW . . they try to make it look wider than it is . . . to satisfy the status craving that " 'I'm occupying more tarmac and carriageways than you ?" Shall we call it "Mrs Mills Syndrome". Not the chopper/racer connundrum . . .sounds like something out of the Banzai TV show. Glad your mate was alright . . .having been provoked to exactly the same thing on a motorbike in the late 70s . . When I landed, I was lucky to have an Army Reserve medic in attendance and within half a mile from the local distruct general hospital. Hammersmith Broadway in the 70s and 80s was a race-track. Jesus . . .that court case.

The Raleigh Chopper with the poorly placed gear stick. I ruined a pair of trousers re-enacting the scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark where Indiana Jones is pulled along the road hanging on to his whip attached to a truck. With us I was Indiana Jones and my mate on his Chopper was the truck and we used my sister's skipping rope (with handles) as the whip. After several runs I failed to realise I had worn the material of my trousers through at the knees and given myself road rash. When I went home my mother didn't know whether to clip me round the ear for ruining the trousers or coddle me as my knees were bleeding badly and I was now feeling the pain. Coddling side won out. After getting my knees cleaned and TCP applied, I was allowed to lie down on the sofa, given a mug of hot chocolate and allowed to watch TV instead of doing my chores.

At 15:34 you go past thecmain entrance to Charing Cross hospital and some people migh think 'hold on, I thought you were going through Hammersmith. How come you've warp jumped into Charing Cross. In the 70s what was Charing Cross hospital in Charing Cross moved to a new building, the one we saw, in Hammersmith as it was a very small site just ofc Trafalgar Square. In the 1980s, I worked on the refurbishment of what was Charing Cross hospital and it became Charing Cross police station. One part had to be kept as it was Grade II listed and designed by Decimus Burton -who also designed Palm House at Kew Gardens.

A great video, Tony, but are you sure about the white van at 25:47? You said he was in the wrong lane but at 25:47/48 there is a merge to the right arrow and then the left-hand lane follows after that with a left arrow. That left arrow now being for the merged to the right traffic. I grew up as a teenager in the 60s and coppers were nasty bastards through the 60s and 70's. My brother took a cop to an appeal court and won because he proved that the lying bastard had perjured himself. He basically stated that he had checked the brake fluid after a crash when reliable witnesses said that the bonnet had to be forced open with tools. My brother received a Queen's pardon for that. That was in Southend.

It's a minor error and not as potentially bad as going through a red light but when you are so keen in the first clip to race the car to your right, you clearly cross the stop line with the lights on red and amber. That still means stop. And it's an error you make frequently.
@ianmason.4 сағат бұрын
