My late husband Brian would have loved to see all those old motorcycles. I have to admit that I do not like those chicane blooming things. I think they should all be removed as they are a pain in the bum. Seeing Father Christmas in October is definitely too early. Most of the shops have already put in their Christmas shop.. I think it spoils it for children. Let’s at least get Halloween over and done with first! I agree with you that the Audi Quattro was and still is, a very stylish car. Identifies as a sponge. Best comment ever! 😂 I really enjoy your longer posts Tony. Keep up with the ranting! 😁

about the second clip, lane discipline is really poor in general, to the point that the dot matrix signs on the motorway near me often say "KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING" (then again, people who drive like that probably can't see or read signs) the few times I use the A1 between Peterborough and Grantham, the inside lane is often moving faster than the outside lane because so many people don't know how to use multi-lane roads

For the reverser at 20:55: It was already manoeuvring before you came into view, so the fact that you had to slow down and wait is by the by. Don't get me wrong, reversing out isn't ideal, but this is a residential street, so its hardly the end of the world.

On the pinch points at 23:40, the problem isn't the lack of obvious priority, it's a lack of ability to judge speed and distance on the part of the driver in front. Also, you approached it far too aggressively, which is why it caught you out a little when things didn't flow as you expected them to.

For any driver wondering (and quite obvious in this clip) but the arm signals by the cyclists at 13:08 is pointing to an obstruction on the left for the riders behind to avoid - usually potholes or sunken drain. A similar right signal can be used as well and is something worth watching out for should you be preparing to pass cyclists as it can be a sign they are about to change position suddenly 👍 It can also be handy to avoid mashing up your own suspension 😉

Hi L D C, thank you for this first clip, I have3 often wondered if temporary traffic lights are working properly but have not had any personal experience of failure like this. What I do understand is that most local authorities pass all work to private contractors and all too often the safety barriers and lights installation and operation is also sub-contracted, all done at fixed prices and to a set schedule. This bizarre combination does not permit any flexibility or variation, one of the problems is that all too often the contractors who open up the road do not have the authority to make any sensible decisions on what to do next! if things are not exactly as specified they have to consult their bosses in an office somewhere who tells them to pack up and go home while an engineer is sent for to sort things out, this all part and parcel of the all so efficient ways in which privatisation works so well. I suggest that much the same applies to the cops in that car, they are under strict instruction to just obey orders and not to deviate more than the quick check and report. Cheers, Richard.
@Dansdialogue
@Dansdialogue Ай бұрын
@@richardharvey1732 when I worked for traffic management ( i was the body who turned up to install the lights and returned to remove them ) back at the turn of the century ( yeah got that one in) the council always had to give permission for any works on any public highway or byway! The police were routinely notified of any works and had reference to confirm they were legit. Any changes to plan like need to dig more than expected or it's different to the parts we brought etc should be dealt with as and when with the relative professional people available to facilitate it. Councils would penalise companies who cause delays by not being on the ball . I can only imagine it is now so entangled in a game of money and necessaty that councils are cornered into submission by cooperate might and drinks in the club house. In other words they don't care and we suffer. Probably the size of it. I was trying to say more but I think this agrees with others and their suspicions .
@richardharvey1732

@@Dansdialogue Hi, Dan's Dialogue, thank you for this response the only people that I have spoken to at road works sites have been the workers on the job, they have told me of the wait for the engineers to look and report and told me that they are not responsible for the lights and signs. Now you tell me that you worked for 'traffic management' can you tell me if that was a local authority department or a private contractor, I am only curious for purely academic reasons, as an ordinary citizen I have no skin in the game!. I must confess to a long history of working in the construction industry where I was able to do things in what ever way I saw fit, given sensible consultation with the client of course, but very little interference from 'management' or any third parties, I was also never caught in any of the strange competitive activities that others have to endure where ignorant individuals demand my compliance with silly 'orders'. The main reason form this being that from a very early age I demonstrated a great reluctance to ever just do as I was told unless it could be properly explained logically and sensibly. I get the distinct impression that this sort of experience is not very common, that most people seem to accept that they must do as asked regardless of their own ideas because that is 'how it works'. I often wondered exactly what this meant because from my limited observation projects run in that manner were highly prone to error and failure and have systems that seem more interested in damage limitation and not getting blamed than getting things right to start with. I now suspect that the whole concept of hierarchical management is flawed!, clearly it can only work if and when the bosses actually know what they are doing and the workers can clearly understand instructions, both conditions which I rarely if ever observe. Cheers, Richard.
@Dansdialogue
@Dansdialogue Ай бұрын
@richardharvey1732 they're all private contractors as far as I know. Fixed traffic lights get serviced by companies like Siemens. Ha yes they seem to get alot of our work. Like the story about having to bastardise their 2 mile train test track when they were test the carriages ordered by a UK rail operator so they messed up their test track so they could accurately see how the carriages would cope on the UKs poorly maintained railway network 😢. And the post office software of course. But yes ! I believe the only " in house " stuff done re traffic lights is planning.

@@Dansdialogue Hi Dans Dialogue, thank you for this response it means a lot to me that some others out there can pass on such information. A recent U-tube video I was watching has Rory Stewart saying that his own experience in politics has left him with a very strong sense of the gross incompetence displayed by people in government, less malicious conspiracy more gross stupidity. It does look to me as if the whole concept of hierarchical management top down strategy is fundamentally flawed!, I wonder at just what point will they begin to understand that they depend on their staff far more than the other way round and the sooner they ask sensible question and listen to the answers the better. There does also appear to be an underlying issue with communication, for the last fifty years in my working life I have only ever relied on face to face negotiation with clients and other workers, arrangement can the confirmed on the dog and bone or intertweb but never made. I have to look someone in the eye to be sure they have heard and understood me, people can and do lie with their tongue but not their expression. Cheers, Richard.

Struggled through life constantly bemused as to where the f everyone else gets their starting point from. But one thing I learned is that I can learn most things but I need to be shown the way it's meant to be done I need to see it. The same as the talking to people in person and seeing them reacting in an honest way. Yes it's a shame that modern life and modern politicians are so badly infected with this man made wokeness. Both ways there were bikes lanes that were about half the width of the lane, the only way to not drive in them would have been to drive straight at oncoming traffic in the middle of the road, even for smaller cars.

And...this is why we use flaggers in the USA. 1) If there are flaggers, there is actual work being done, and 2) No worries about stuck red lights, 3) The flaggers will make sure the lane is clear before releasing traffic the other way.

People in the wrong lane - I see this every time I'm on the motorway. I think it's because people are not using their brain when driving, they're on autopilot, thinking about other stuff and not paying attention to what they're doing. They snail it in because of not to "insult" our non-christian inhabitants. That is the only reason. We Dutch have instead of Vrolijk Kerstfeest ( Merry Christmas), feest as in fest, ee is as in dAy, mAYbe, and Gelukkig Nieuwjaar ( Happy New Year) ( new and nieuwe have the same pronunciation), we now have: Fijne Feestdagen ( Pleasant Fest Days). So, our own belief ( for the believers, Christians) is moved aside to not insult and to be more in fashion to make more money.

That traffic calming at 23:14 works well outside of heavily urbanised areas as drivers from the countryside tend to be more understanding about flow and giving way, especially when roads get blocked by fallen trees, floods and other non manmade items. In an urban environment like that, unfortunately you need to have designated priorities to prevent the confusion shown Don't get annoyed at the driver in front, it is traffic _calming_ after all 😉

The longest temporary traffic lights I knew of was about a mile or two east of my old village of Rhydymain in North Wales. They were there for about 30 years whilst no work was being done, and they never made them permanent. To be fair, one of the lanes was at risk of sliding off into the river below, and eventually they built a couple of bridges and completely diverted the road.

Trade Plates are only meant for use on vehicles that are:- 1) Road worthy, 2) Insured, 3) Have a valid MOT *unless the vehicle is exempt*. Vehicles should only be used for the purpose stated on a Trader's application - mainly for a Customer to undertake a test drive. Other uses apply but I won't list them here. You missed fault number 5 with the white vehicle at 27:10. As it came off the roundabout, it should have given way to the pedestrian who had priority, as should you have. Roundabouts are junctions and therefore the pedestrian has priority. The Highway code does not make this explicit enough but it's something Ashley Neal has had confirmation of directly from the DVSA.

It is a rather annoying and dangerous feature in my opinion. I can see it is trying to encourage the Dutch reach but honestly, how many drivers or passengers do that anyway? I think it should be folded using the lock by default or you can change it to be ignition if you prefer

@@smilerbob agreed. It did change for later models and the mirrors now fold when the car is locked, but the unfold default is still on ignition. So if you’ve locked the car, then open it to get in without starting the engine, then need to get out again. No mirrors! It can be changed in settings.

I can’t remember what video this was but I remember a video where you asked why do some people just put their foot on the break and not use the handbrake I can answer that now because I got a car that has a thing called auto hold which is where you put your foot on the break. Bring your foot off again and the car holds it there with some cars that have auto hold their brake lights stay on.

Regarding the police car, most police cars are not on random do anything patrols, many are on pre booked tasks, like off to make an arrest, court, prison, checking up on something or someone ( curfews, probation ), going to take a statement or going to a particular location because of a request. All those were Sunbeam motorcycles and a little research reveals that it's The Pioneer Run which is an annual run from Tattenham Corner Epsom Downs to Madeira Drive in Brighton or Shoreham Airport in Shoreham on Sea (terminus varies year by year. The last time I was in Brighton this spring there were major works going on on Madeira Drive). So the bloke who's broken down a mile into the 'race' is going to be _very_ disappointed at his performance.

6:55 I would go with the fact he's turning right 20 miles down the road so thinks it's best to be in that lane. Using a phone to minimise manoeuvres could also be a contributing factor though. 13:56 He was waiting for the cyclists - they must have taken the wrong turn! 😅 17:24 I think some cars just have broken bulbs, faulty levers or are out of blinker fluid. It's polite to inform them if you can. 18:44 IIRC That car should not be driven on the road unless it's booked into and driving directly to a nearby test centre for it's MOT. 21:52 Maybe they quickly realised they took a wrong turn and decided to correct themselves there instead of looking for another place to turn around? 26:16 I think you need a little counter on the screen for some of these if you ever get the time to edit one in one day! 27:08 5 if you include not letting the pedestrian cross at the junction... 28:18 Bikes do all need cycle plates and insurance throughout IMO. @@johncranna9427 yes, hard to say. When someone's up your jacksy, you have to spot the pedestrian really early, and brake very gradually to manage the traffic behind. Regarding lane hogging. Most lorries use the inside lane therefore it takes quite a pounding. The other lanes tend to have a smoother surface, a much more pleasant drive.

Absolutely no reason to use lane 2 just because you may get a smoother ride in that lane. You're turning a three lane motorway into a two lane motorway.

Meh, not a word of truth in that I'm afraid. I stick to the nearside lane unless I'm overtaking or soon to turn right and I find no appreciable difference in the quality of road surface in different lanes. The only place I notice obvious lorry related wear is on the approach to roundabouts where you'll see significant wear from lorries braking, and as it's somewhere that your lane is dictated by the direction you're going there is no choosing lanes for a better road surface there.

Lumps and Priority. This is a tried and tested method of controlling speed in urban areas. Bring an air of uncertainty into the mind about who has priority and everyone slows down. The Dutch have been doing it for years!

It does bring uncertainty and could reduce speed but the main thing it does is increase pollution due to the increased amount of braking and acceleration it now needs so not the best idea in the world.

The Dutch might have been doing it for years but the Dutch have also spent many more years changing the attitudes of roads users in general. We can’t always do what the Dutch have done for years in this country as we are still in the infancy of that attitude shift

Thank yoy for the reply and for some reason the edit I made yesterday where I added an additional sentence has not applied That sentence was “There are still issues with going Dutch so I strongly believe that the change in attitude is more important than implementation of new road designs” Which is sort if what I was implying with the first part of the reply where these traffic calming measures have been in rural settings for decades, either by design or by nature, and there are rarely issues with them but enter an urban environment and traffic calming becomes the Wild West

2:40 Not that controversial, it's just the old ''proceed with caution'' at this point - them cops probably have other matters to deal with, officer obviously took details so will report back. Seen that a few times with faulty lights, either stuck on red, or going back to red as soon as it gets green. I usually report it when I see it, and it gets fixed. What actually grinds me gears, is red light roadworks with no works being carried out sometimes for weeks. Personal best, seen my own road shut for 3 months and nothing done, then 3 blokes turned up one day to fix a manhole cover. Now I miss Benny Hill.
