This documentary is difficult to watch and frustrating. A big chunk of the story must be missing cause it didn't made sense at all. They tried to paint her as a victim but it didn't work, her answers were all very ambiguous, some didn't made absolutely sense. What's bothering me the most is that she didn't clearly acknowledge her part of responsibility in all on it.

Sadly they are not trying to portray her as a naive person that made very dumb mistakes. In the subtitled version there's a moment when she is writting about something "weird" but in the diary they showed where she was writting she wrote "weird, but kind of cool..." which meant she liked all that shit. She loved the attention, the feeling of being superior than others even when she is portrayed as someone kind or humanitarian. She does all those humanitarian actions precisely to feel superior. BUT in the subtitled version in my country they didn't translate the "bu kind of cool..." part which made it seem like she was a victim when in reality she was partly the one to blame for everything. And that's sad because they create this imbecile distorted version of reality in which women are the noble inocent victim instead of portraying reality as it is, women ALSO need to take care of their own actions and need to pay attention of what they do and be wary of manipulative Aholes, etc. It makes women believe the very dumb idea that everytime a women is f'ed up a man is to blame because all men are evil according to their uneducated inmature perspective.

She was in denial, not a victim of Stockholm Syndrome. A very attractive, successful business owner, used to getting her way is cat fished in the most obvious way. She does not want to admit that he was not Prince Charming and that she got ripped off. She was more concerned about her dog’s immortality than her loyal employees and business. If there wasn’t the money to stay in all the luxurious hotels and for the expensive shiny things she would never have gone along with it. She knew what was going on the second she met him and realized he lied about his weight. Started out in NYC with owning upscale trendy Vegan restaurant and ended up in Dolly World eating Dominos. She got a documentary out of it though.

I used to eat at Pure Food & Wine (for special occasions, like birthdays. It was too expensive for me to go frequently). The food was sublime. Sarma smartly added a less-expensive eatery called One Lucky Duck, which was around the corner, and another one at Chelsea Market. It always had customers. I don't know what her profit margin was, but Sarma had a real business going. When Pure Food closed, it broke my heart. But then it suddenly revived, and I ran down there to treat myself for a lunch--and to thank the staff who had returned, despite problems getting paid. (I tipped big that day.) Then, about a month later, it closed for good. It broke my heart the second time, learning that she fell for a domineering man who manipulated her into committing crimes. I hope she continues to cook, although she shouldn't be involved in a restaurant's finances. I still dream of her ice cream sundaes.

@@krempel_und_klumpad I would not necessarily suggest she is/was stupid. Highly intellectual people have become member of cults. She was vulnerable and sadly very introverted, which doesn't allow for many social bonds. If anything there seems to be an underlining psychological issue. She clearly lost control, lost herself, and lost any mental or emotional connections. Narcissism can only thrive if its victim has a nurturing personality, someone who wants to mend whatever it is that is broken. She should´ve been highly traumatized to the point of being terrified of anything related to him, but they sounded like two buddies remembering the old times on the phone... She said there were no drugs in her story, but somehow I find it hard to believe. Those two looked like two people addicted to some potent drug to a point of losing connection with reality... Damn there are so many people that are so incredibly easy to control! I was backpacking in India & befriended a chick a couple of months into my journey who was leaving soon, so we decided to travel to some spots together b4 she split. We bought some cannabis from an incense vendor in the city of Mysore who insisted we smoke w/him, & they got into a conversation that I zoned out from for a minute until I heard her telling him very personal details, including her name, hotel, & room number, & was startled to attention & intervened. She was in a complete daze. In that short period of time, he had hypnotized her. It's a known criminal tactic in parts of Asia & is probably why he insisted we smoke w/him. I was bored by his rambling, & thought he was a bit incoherent, but those same words & tactics had pulled her right in. We changed our hotel. Don't forget look out for your loved ones, not all of them are as mentally incorruptible as you might be, & don't forget to look out for swindlers, because they're out there, & you're the target.

In an attempt to try to victimize Sarma, her disillusion of a “another world” coupled with her naivety real came through like a broken pipe bursting out with water, but it wasn’t water, it was bs. I watched the whole thing and remained totally objective but the more I listened to her I am convinced she’s just as culpable as the guy. Zero remorse for stuffing her staff. Constant amnesia with past events, how convenient. And to top it all of, they introduced her proudly as a Wharton alumni, yet her wits never showed up during her time in Hogwarts. Alec Baldwin, you are blessed to have dodged this bullet

She’s actually paying them back. And she did do some time. I do believe that initially she was tricked by this ass of a man who she married. She was definitely being brainwashed in that “keep investing in my cultish nonsense and rewards are at the end” sort of way. But really that mo-Fo is a selfish narcissist who has an obvious gambling addiction and his amounts he pressured her for were probably due to debts. The sad part is that she was caught in the grip of something she felt was “off” but she didn’t put the damn breaks on it. There’s definitely some typical abuser psychological bs going on in the way he was dealing with her. But it still seems crazy that she continued to dump large amounts of cash his way and sabotaged her credibility with everyone, tanking her own business. I’m convinced that the smartest kind of smart isn’t which school you went to or what big words you can speak or how well you know how to earn, but how well you can see through bs when it’s staring you right in the face. Also, I’ve heard some sort of psychology where the more invested a person is in something that’s losing, the more they keep hoping that they will win so they can’t stop putting in. This goes for gamblers, or relationships that are failing or abusive ones. I think she was miserably feeding into a lie and hoping it would prove true, but eventually the house of cards came down. It’s really weird though. She’s a very beautiful and smart woman but she was still brainwashed by this creep. In the end she probably couldn’t believe she was even with that total slob. He ruined her life! Hopefully she can make restitution to all the people she failed. Maybe even find some redemption and have a little vegan restaurant again after she pays back. That jerk is still out there trying to scam others. I hope he gets the smack down.

I hold Sarma just as accountable as Anthony. When they asked her a question regarding why she didn't let someone know since there were a lot of people around her who had a lot of love for her or something like that and she responded in a way that was pretty narrow minded and like she was only thinking of herself. She said something about they would put her in an insane asylum or something and she was like "and tell them what?" .... That to me, was basically her saying that despite her employees being very obviously uncomfortable and confused and suspicious of this guy she brought into the company, yet very close, caring and kind to her, she decided she couldn't trust them and would rather place her trust in this guy who was doing nothing but ruining these people's careers. Like that's awful. I just don't see how she could be completely innocent in this. I don't know if what I'm typing conveys what I'm trying to say, but basically I feel that she was very selfish

I totally understand the frustration, I feel the same way but you have to think she was brainwashed and very afraid. It’s similar to ppl who are physically/ emotionally abused who won’t leave their partners. Although they move and talk like they’re their own person they don’t have control over themselves because the abuser has taken all the control. He had her life, her spirit, her money, her lively hood by the throat. Sometimes it’s easier and less daunting to not have to deal, look past the bad and convince yourself that everything is fine, even if it means hurting yourself and loved ones. The excuses she made were just a cop out to her self-guilt and self-disappointment. She knew she f’d up and was trapped. Just because your smart and successful doesn’t mean your clever and courageous

I have a cousin with Aspergers; most don't notice anything different. She's brilliant in many ways...but there are other things that are less transparent. For example, she genuinely believes she's a black person (Namimbian to be exact) because someone told her she was born into the wrong 'casing'. Her parents are European. Her grandparents and great grandparents were European etc. She's also out of touch with other people which definitely makes her seem selfish. This is something I could see happening to her, easily. Sarma has always been the nicest, sweetest person. Her restaurant was far ahead of its time. The food was stunning. She deeply cared about what she was doing. She was a workaholic. She was an empathetic person. Narcissists target empaths. To me, it always felt like she was so hungry for love that when this dude came along and love bombed her, she didn't realize she was being manipulated and gaslit until it was too late. The whole debacle left her employees in a very bad spot too, so sympathy must be extended to them. But I truly believe that Sarma would never maliciously harm her team or jeopardize her beloved business away unless she was in some form of crisis that consumed her. And in her case, it was her personal life that was the crisis.

What made me empathize less and less with her, was the fact that she presented herself as innocent and as a victim.. totally not owning up to the fact that the downward spiral was sponsored 100% by the choices made by herself; a grown woman who studied, enjoyed success in life and had a lot of caring people around her who - in the case of her personnel - were depending on her choices to be good for business. I couldn't finish the series because I started to seriously dislike her and wasn't curious anymore.. but besides her mind-boggling rationale, I was also surprised to see that for almost 2 episodes the people around her didn't seem to come across as people who SERIOUSLY raised issues about what they saw unfolding. Sure, they were upset, uncomfortable, surprised and wary.. but that's not the same as addressing these issues in an appropriate problem defining/solving way. In that sense they also seemed to clear their side of the street by feigning sincerity and innocence.

you’re absolutely right. but according to the documentary towards the end, there was only 1 manager (operation’s manager in charged of also overseeing payroll) who outright told Sarma off when she transferred 90k USD to her creepy husband which would mean that they can’t make payroll for the employees that month. Sarma responded harshly that it was her business and she can do whatever she pleases with the money. The manager was subsequently fired. Sarma caused her own downfall. Her creepy husband just accelerated it.

I watched the documentary and a podcast and she massively contradicts herself then uses trauma as a excuse for not remembering. For example , she said she covered up her tattoo not to hide from police but bc she was over the brand but in a podcast she then said Anthony tried to get her to remove the tattoo but she refused because her brand meant so much to her. Then she said nobody was close enough to her in her life to tell her what was going on was crazy but is now using close friends from decades ago to paint her in a good light , close friends she said didn’t exist. Then there’s the fact she said she had no clue that leaving hotel to hotel and changing her name was being ‘on the run’ from police when even an idiot know that’s what that means, then brags about how smart she is. She had an affair with her married lawyer and claims not to have known he was married when he was very public. She’s just a messy white woman who is parroting victim talking points and amateur therapists on the internet are buying it to advance their own narratives.

it is as simple as that ! 100% agree! to add she is simply a narcissistic , self -absorbed bratty white woman from the upper side of NYC..Was she a black or latina woman she would still be in prison doing that 15years, no documentary, trying to make her look innocent and manipulated.. that shit would not have flown . From the start I was like "why is she , the russian and this guy still not in prison , like why are they able to tell their stories being free?" The Justice system clearly has a way of falling one sided doesn't it? and you right all these self-made Therapist diagnosing that she is a victim of manipulation should seriously stick to their day job. I have seen too many case of where people really got manipulated through cults and even those real victims apologizes for things that really was not their fault, but because they needed forgiveness for their actions they would apologize , but not this woman, nah she just made excuses over and over not once apologizing to anyone she hurt through this process of "manipulation" When Minorities get sent to prison for 2 or more years for stealing bread or milk for their families, they cannot claim it is poverty that manipulated them to steal they gots to face the time , even though it is ridiculous. Here this woman literally steals over hundreds of thousands of dollars and gets less than 4 Months and still complains like a white woman of why she had to be judged lmao can someone say white privilege PALEEZ!!!

I have to agree. Even if all the evidence wasn't stacked against her, the bottom line is she CHOSE this relationship. I have a close friend who's going through the same thing and everything is about what he did to her. When I confronted her and told her that she CHOSE this person and that she had to accept some kind of responsibility, she blew up at me. The reason was because I was no longer playing into her story. There are no villains and no victims at this point in our evolution. Period.
