In this video we take a look at Joseph's 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD. This jeep has the same motor as a diesel sprinter van!! Not to mention its filled with off-road suspension upgrades, touring bumpers, and a custom built overlanding off-road trailer set-up.

I own a relatively stock 08 crd. She runs great, but I won't lie, I've put some money into her over the years. I've had issues with many of the engine seals and have pretty much rebuilt the top half of the engine. However, I finished doing almost everything I wanted to do to it couple years ago, and she now purring better then new. I feel like the first 10 years of her life were spent ironing out the kinks and she's now ready to run the next 12 years problem free; minus wear and tear items.

What all did you end up doing to get to that point?
@canadianehbignorth7325
@canadianehbignorth7325 4 жыл бұрын
@@justinodman3982 Replaced the elephant hose, oil cooler seals, both driver and passenger window actuators. I added a 2 1/2in OME lift, threw some AT 31s on it, changed the upper control arms and replaced the fuel tank when it started leaking with a custom tank that cost less then an OEM tank and gave me a couple extra gallons (figure that one out). Upper control arms, beefier tie rods, and better steering dampeners for those nasty rotted out gravel roads spread throughout Canada. I had to do the injector seals which had some minor (but no less bitch of a job) carbon build-up ($150 to buy an injector puller kit that can cover every vehicle under the sun because the smaller more affordable kits didn't have the part I wanted). Throw in a couple camshaft sensors because the first replacement I got was faulty. Also a DPF/EGR delete with a tune because this thing is a pretty thirsty little engine without it as far as diesels go... And finally a rear-pinion seal which was a fun one because it happened while I was almost 300km from the nearest town (with a single qt of gear oil, no additive, and zero phone reception). I limped it around 150kms before I was able to get reception and find a shop that could be bribed into running the part out the remaining way. They then helped me do the job right there on the side of the road with a tree branch and didn't charge me a thing for it because, Canada, eh!. No damage to the gearing in the axle. p.s. I don't really 4x4 it. Maybe a short little stint to get from A to B in the backwoods, but I'm too much of a pussy about breaking things. 85% of it's life is spent on highways with maybe 10% gravel roads, and 5% city stop and go. Gravel roads are hard on things. Oh, and rust removal/repair/prevention annually because salt roads.

@@canadianehbignorth7325 good bit of work you've got done to it. Sounds like it'll be in good shape for some time with all that done. I'm sure you cleaned out the carbon build up in the intake, head intake ports, and that's where the egr block off comes in. How's your mileage on it after the tune and egr delete? End up deleting the swirl valve components, blocking open, or just cleaning them to be functional again? Also, have any luck cleaning injectors, or did you just replace?

I am diesel fanatic as well. I would take WK or KJ CRD over the fiat diesel powered that are currently available. I was excited but with the problems (Fire, blow blocks, etc, etc) I would take a gas LJ or JT at this point. I built a YJ turbo diesel about 14 years ago, a little over built but love it.

Out of the current choices in midsized diesel off-road trucks, I think the Colorado ZR2 is a better option. The Mercedes engine has a longer track record in multiple models than the eco diesel Jeep currently offers, I guess time will tell which is best. The bummer about the WK CRD is desperately needs more than 5 speeds. The RPMs at freeway speeds are a bit high for a diesel and MPG suffers because of it.

Rare? 1 out 3 is diesel here in Canada, I had 2, just sold one. Liberty diesel is Nor very good, just the WK is Merc. the liberty is vm motori or fiat. Love the WK. great mpg, torque is the same than a hemi.can go 80 mph but the diesel consumption goes to the roof, 65 mph the car is happy.

@@life_of_riley88 i shouldn’t have said that the liberty diesel is not very good, my bad. What I should have said is “the Liberty is not a Mercedes Engine, it is VM Motori (Fiat)”. And leave it like that
@aaronmorris8314
@aaronmorris8314 3 жыл бұрын
If the Liberty had a "normal" diesel engine, that would be no good. The fact it was turbocharged is what gave it the edge over the rest in its class. When my friend with 05 kj crd flat out left me in the dust in my 05 Ford escape XLT V6 AWD on road, off road, over rocks and in mud, I was devistated. Glad we never bet any $$$. His jeep was superior to my Ford in every aspect except when it came time for him to buy parts availability became an issue. I sold that Ford as soon as I could to spare myself any further embarrassment. Figured if I can't beat 'em, might as well join 'em! Now I have a wk limited 4x4 5.7 Hemi. I'm still a Ford guy but there's just something about these Jeep's.

@@aaronmorris8314 I have both a KJ CRD(liberty) and an 08 WK CRD with the 3.0 Mercedes diesel. Both are awesome, but the little liberty is an absolute blast to drive.
@cgyiltis
@cgyiltis 3 жыл бұрын
@@aaronmorris8314 vm motori diesels are average. Mercedes makes a really good diesel. Liberty’s diesel are better than the gas ones, but the reliability of the 2.8. The car is not very good. Now the grand cherokees with the 3.0 CRD Are the winners. With the merc engine able to tow 7100lb and having Quadra drive are the real winners. With skid plates roomier and an engine that can go for more of 400k

These are quite common in europe. First basic model starts at 3900 dollars (without quadra trac). Mercedes engines were on a 2005-2010 models in europe and 2007-2008 in america (source: wikipedia). Seem to have good mpg, can tow stuff and quite reliable - this is what i have read from the internet. PS! I don't own one of these just looking some reviews on this jeep and thinking on buying one - that is why i am here in the first place.

The hot tune, I can feel the difference! The eco tune added ~2 mpg. but since i have larger tires and my speedo is off - it is a quess based on the differences in numbers showing up on computer. My WK cruises all day long at 90-95 (when no troopers around). Great vehicle - i have only used the 4-Lo twice but worked like locking differentials!
