I know this video is a year old but wanted to say thanks for the detailed instructions. I'm in the middle of a restoration and I've not done much sheetmetal welding. Watching these videos definitely gives me a starting point and a place to start practicing before I weld the panel on the actual car.

I started welding 35 years ago with a Kemppi Kempomat 1500 MIG for my assignments and I always welded as of 4mm thick and thicker. Always the same settings always in a hurry, always sputtering and sisseling so I decided to step over on arc welding which I did eversince. Now at age 60 you gave me the push to start MIG welding sheetmetal again and do bodywork myself on my projects. So I started to build a bikeseat as a test with your advices....Well the test turned out to be the perfect. Patience, the right Settings, the Gap and Air...PSGA I call it, will do the trick. Especially if you hate grinding too much weld. I use a tree of scrapmetal welded together where I do my settings on. Also a gunspray to keep the nozzle clean. Thanks a lot, love your work

Thanks, these welding instructions are very helpful. The details of the process are important, such as air cooling and short welding time to avoid warping of the panel.

Great video. Questions - 1) What size wire are you using? 2) What is the gas set at?
@DanTheManIOM6 ай бұрын
since no one else answered the .025 is more controllable, but maybe .030 ? I think you get better results with the smaller wire, I have .030 at home but at school, they use .025. and for gas, as low as possible since you don't want to waste it. I think they say 25-30 on the regulator gauge, play with it, I run 15-20 on the gauge. practice practice practice

Amazing video, 🎉 thank you!! Silly question, why not rig a ceramic or titainium air tip with ceramic mount right above the nozzle shroud with a solenoid on the air gun, wired trigger pull off (if you like) with a contact switch just at or inside the base of the trigger. Then when you let off the trigger you will get nothing, and as you release more, you will get air right at the position the gun tip is pointing. That means you cool quicker, and don't clumsily have to grab the air with the left hand??? You also don't lose position if you look away. You can also adjust the trigger pull as full release is nothing, short pull is air, medium pull is air off, so you won't blow a hole right after letoff feed, when the weld is still red hot, and full pull is feed. I'm probably missing something in the art, just an observation!! 🎉 Thanks again!!

Overlapping can potentially be visible in the paint, even if perfectly flat. Also the overlap presents an opportunity for moisture to condense inside the fender.
@ericpetz58319 ай бұрын
Yes you are correct on both accounts. I notice that the overlap joints, show up more especially on hot days. Mainly because the metal expands and contracts at a different rate, due to the added metal thickness of the overlap joint, then the rest of the panel.
