Agree David - I've added to my saved list. He's dead right about the savings. Since I started doing my own vehicle servicing and repairs a few years ago I've saved nearly 2k GBP. It paid for an Oxford welder and a heap of tools. My local Ford dealer, who sold me my vehicles, has stopped speaking to me though. I've also learned to avoid them for MoT tests as they will now do anything to fail them in their hunt for things to repair.

P.S. I use the Eastwood sprays quite a lot. Rust Encapsulator and Extreme Chassis Black are great, although I've tended to replace the former with Jenolite now as it's a lot cheaper and seems to work ok. The High Temperature Coating (silver) is worth a look as well. Since I started coating all my caliper carriers with it the corrosion I have to deal with has diminished significantly. Every time I change the discs (rotors) I clean up and re-coat the calipers and carriers with High Temp Coating. Huge difference in lifespan and well worth the cost of the spray. Plus they look great through the spokes of the alloys.

I used to do autobody repair back in the 70s and most shops only had acetylene and oxygen welding equipment. It got the job done but it took a bit of skill to avoid warping of the area during welding. Also, the flux from the brazing rod had to be removed perfectly or else it would cause problems with the body filler. I had a spot welder at my shop which was really helpful. I wish that I would have had a MIG welder at the time. I lived in the rust belt and this welder would have saved me a lot of time and effort. Thank you for the video.

As a part time and old school car repairer, I had increasing need to use the MIG welder. But I did find getting the right advice on welding technique hard to find. Also, without regular practice I find can make unnecessary mistakes when painting or welding. This is a really useful video, I use it , like many from Eastwood, as a quick refresher course before I dive into another major job.

Great beginners tutorial. If I may expand on it; Disconnect your battery when performing welds ON the vehicle. Also, if I missed it?, Proper wire selection, to match the gauge of welding material. Again, great video and that unit makes sweet welds! 😃

Some people are going to complain about a chance for rust to develop from moisture being trapped by those flange pieces placed behind the repair panel in the example. The thing to remember is just how long do we want the repair to last. The rest of your lifetime, or for as long as you expect to keep the car? I personally don't care if the repair is going to last for 20 years, I'm 66 years old. Make it easy on yourself.

It's possible with flux core, but more difficult and more to clean up / grind. Using gas will definitely be much easier and provide significantly better results.

good tip to plug weld the strip/backing for the butt weld. probably helps cool it a bit faster with more metal and prevent burn through.

Hodge-Podge Garage if you were welding a patch in an area with a large amount of rust wouldn’t the overlap of the strip be bad if you didn’t weld it again or seal it from the other side ??

Save time and money by just using neodymium magnets to hold them in place. No need for the strips at all

I agree with Jursaw, I bought a cheap welder and took a large hammer to fine adjust the torment it inflicted on me. ( It won't do that to anyone else) Buy a decent welder from the start, avoid extreme violence on your cheap welder, they are designed by Beelzebub himself. what i do is i haul of rigs that people want to get ride of till i get all the parts for one rig then i build it like my 68 chevy pu it has no rust in it perfect body no dings put a 454 stroker with tunnel ram heavy duty 400 turbo serpentine belt set up after market ignition with msd rally wheels lots of chrome and have only 1300 in the truck plus i traded some of the left over parts for paint and will trade a rust free cab for cowl induction hood for the 68 has to be metal hood have 2 sitting plus fenders stock hoods with no bend in them lots of boxes metal or wood on the inside this is how u save big money on rigs my 73 ss nova was even better but i give all the left over parts to my racing buddies

You will use the Argon-Co2 mix and gas will provide better results than flux core, especially in auto restoration.

Love these videos! Man, I wish you guys would set up a shop like this down here in Terre Haute, IN. Even if it's just to teach things like this, it would be awesome to have access to. I have a Hobart 190 that I use for little things around the house or in my garage. To be honest, it's entirely too much of a welder for someone like me who has no experience welding but I thought that having too much power would be better than needing more power and not having it, so I went ahead bought it instead of their 140 model or anything else. I recently used it to weld up some cracks in my push mower's deck. I've never used gas--haven't even tried as I'm always afraid of anything that's compressed! (Me and things that can explode never make good bedfellows... I'm a wuss, I know...) But what I've found doing FCAWS is that preparation is everything, and as long as you use their anti-spatter spray, you can have some really great welds. If you don't use the spray, you'll have bad spatter but the welds will still be strong. My process up to this point has been to follow the sheet inside the door as closely as possible but then after sanding everything up, wiping the prepared surface afterwards with alcohol or whatever cleaner I have. Then if everything looks good, I spray on the anti-spatter spray (just a few spritzes) then try to consistently drag-weld using a 45-degree angle. The mower deck has been the thickest steel I've welded so far. I think it was around 1/8th inch thick, but even then, I didn't do any dimes or circles because even with that thickness, this welder wanted to burn through it and I think it was my technique rather than the settings as once I sped up my drag, things improved. I have a lot to learn (obviously) but I had some great welds with it once I got some things figured out. I really love this welder. Thanks for the video! Some great info in it, especially the part about the reinforcing of the butt areas using those strips and tacks.

A 135 is still adequate. The more important thing is weld joint prep. So grinding a bevel to prep for a butt weld

I appreciate Eastwood's attempt to produce videos that add to the novice's toolbox; however, a little more care should be used when making recommendations. Using a stich weld pattern to buttweld panels such as this patch being shown here will result in puckering unless a fish plate is being used. I understand that if the fish plate is being used this is an acceptable method but if not the technique has to change to spoting in between the spots. this one piece of information is all that is needed
