The location & positioning of the gas tank is about as ideal as possible in that car. A gas tank is only dangerous in a collision if it becomes ruptured, thereby allowing the liquid to mix with "air" becoming a volatile combustible. The further back, the better the odds of tank rupture in a rear-end collision. The combination of being centrally located within the structure, and being only 4 inches deep, from front to back, thus minimizing possibility of rupture in a collision makes that tank as safe a location as any in the car. On top of all that Chad is constructing a "firewall" between the tank & passenger compartment. Keep up the good work Chad & Jolene!

Thank you for your show. It has helped me tremendously by giving me the motivation to get up and get back out in my shop. You talked a lot today about the gas tank and about it being in the trunk. It made me think that some viewers did not agree with your decision to put it in the trunk. One of the reasons I watch your show, is to get new ideas and see how YOU build a car. When I was younger, I built airboats, wheel buggies and full tracks. There are no plans, and you couldn't get something already made. You had to make everything. Most of the time you build it " flying by the seat of your pants". You make decision on what to do based on the situation, what you feel is the best way to do it, and then move on to the next thing. If you sit on something for days it doubles or triples the build time . What people need to understand if down the road something don't work, you can always change it and make it work better. Sometimes people can't see the bigger picture. Again, I love your show. Keep the shows comming. GREAT STUFF. Ps. When I made gas tanks, for the fuel pick up, I usually drilled a hole and welded a nut over the hole. Then I could screw any size pickup line I wanted.

Chad makes me proud to be a Canadian. I wish I learned how to use a Mig Welder when I was younger. Chad and Jolene should do a video on the tools they use and brand of filler he uses to flood the the surface. Chad makes his jobs look like a piece of cake which took years of experience. The Jag XJ6 engine was a smart choice. I drove to Montreal from Vancouver and back in my XKE 3.8 roadster in January and later to LA and back to Van with zero problems. Jolene does a great job of filming.

Just keep doing what you're doing. As for the tank, I thought back and down like you talked about as a possibility, that would give storage for the day etc. as opposed to the vertical tank idea, but the vertical tank, as you have showed us give daily storage above the tank. Enough for sweaters, a jacket, a purse and other small items. The car is shaping up to be one beautiful machine. Keep up the great work.

The car is coming along nicely. As for tank location i like it lower and further back, There is a lot of dead space that could be used for storage which might come in handy if you travel anywhere with it and need to carry a small suitcase or even tools or a car cover.

We build our cars for ourselves and we all do it differently. I would have mounted the tank on the trunk floor because my idea was to have the filler come through the centre of the spare wheel and have no visible filler(that of course depends on how easy the spare door is to use) and then be able to use the space behind the seats for folding chairs or luggage etc but that's not the car you are building for jolene and it is only because you have started the concept that we are all getting excited and want to become involved. Keep up the good work

Your woodcraft buddy can build a panel, bet he has some great ideas for latches and could build a beautiful panel. Thanks for addressing the comments,hope everybody gets it.

I have no access to blue prints of the original 57SC, I only have seen a sectional croquis and it seems that the cilindrical bay for the spare wheel has not the depth that Chad has fabricated. With less depth, the gas tank would have another location and inhanced capacity. In any case, Chad has done it his way and fine his own solutions. Awesome, outstanding work. I'm completely astonished when i see him, measuring and placing holes, roughly with his eyes and a measuring tape. From Barcelona, Catalonia

Having both worked as an engineer in the design and test side of the auto industry plus having had a bad crash in a 1960s car I can genuinely tell you safety wasn’t at the front of their minds back then or even probably now. Everything is driven by cost, and a life actually does have a price! It’s calculated from the number of potential deaths against the cost and speed of skipping a manufacturing process, part or safety test. Remember the Ford Pinto scandal. Please take into account the weight of the gas tank when full of fuel, my accident was in a Triumph Spitfire and it’s tank was fitted in the same location as yours. It was fitted correctly with all of its factory bolts, upon collision the conserved momentum of the fuel mass caused the tank bolts to be punched out of the mounting frame. The now loose and split gas tank spilled fuel into the trunk and into the cabin. The only reason we didn’t explode was the moisture in the air due to it raining. Be aware, be warned😬
@Hurdmainesgarage3 жыл бұрын

No issues with how your doing this tank. Seen some pretty bad ideas over the years from others. Here's a little idea. To help with sound deading issues. Buy a few cans of the spray foam and build it up around tank. It can easily be sculpted with a hacksaw blade. Can allways cut it out if any issues with tank. Could also help cut down on any splashing of fuel inside car if in a accident! Could fill that whole cavity tightly. Look Great Chad. Great team the two of you😁

Instead of using hinges for the fuel tank access door, you could use tabs that set into the floor pan just in front of the tank. When combined with some spring pins or twist locks at the top of the door, it should hold the access door firmly. By not using hinges, you could pull the top pins and then lift the access door out over the seats instead of hinging it open and needing to remove the seats to open the door. Just a thought...
