Bobby, you ain't right. I got Steamroll today and I'm incredibly happy with him. Everything locks in just fine on mine. Possibly the problem is, I can see you don't have the backpack/windshield slid in all the way. Just nudge those grey tabs in as far as they'll go, and the back will slide in completely. Once you do that, zero problems. And I have NO idea what you mean about the materials feeling cheap. Light, yes, but I feel completely confident in it.

Good review...2 things: - when putting on the pile drivers, you have to open the hands before collapsing them into the forearm... otherwise nothing will sit right.... It's in the instructions. - for the hood gimmick, you DO NOT open where the hood meets the wind screen... Rather it is at the seem right below that. That too is in the instructions. Other than that, you made some good observations. That said, I do think that this is a better figure than the MP. for everything that you say detracts from it's completed look, I can point to the same thing about the official...(the gappy knees on BC Vs. the hollow legs on the official, ETC...). it's all subjective.

I picked up the Red Alert, and...I like the difference on the shelf from Takara 'Swipe, but I gotta agree about the cohesiveness. Nothing in the torso feels like it's secured, and that makes it a bit un-fun to handle. I'll keep it because the Takara Red looks like Sideswipe in cosplay, but these should be at the $60 price point, not $85-$90. Have a good one.

I often see this comment in the forums and such, “(name of figure) is better because it’s cartoon accurate.” I understand where they are coming from, but I feel it’s a subjective preference and not objective fact. Had they said, “I prefer (named figure) more because it’s cartoon accurate.”, then I would fully back their comment. I feel today from a certain crowd, quality is somehow dependent on cartoon accuracy and not actually the quality of the figure. Happy for them, but it does create a distortion in the market. Oh yes, and as always, great video and insight as always buddy.

It is funny about the light weight feeling cheap but I got the BadCube Insecticons and they too were light but they're holding up beautifully to a lot of transformations and play. I got the three pack and gave Kickback to my 9 year old who is ten now and Scrapnel to my 5 year old who is 6 now and I kept Bombshell because that is the one I specifically wanted. My kids have played non-stop with theirs for the last year and a half and I have messed with Bombshell quite a bit and man they're holding up so well. No breaks, no stress marks, still hold poses beautifully (no wobbly joints after all this time) and I have been happily surprised. If they're an indication of the quality of other BadCube Transformers it is a real shame they're no longer making Transformers. I thought at first their light weight might indicate sub-standard build materials but it sure hasn't worked out that way. The gaps in a few key places are distracting but I think it looks better than Takara's offering. I would have taken the BadCube over Takara any day of the week.

I think BC might have over-estimated the demand for these guys. The old MPs are still pretty good - I cant see too many people swapping them out for these guys. Red Alert's look is different enough to be kind of tempting though. If they took a stab at a figure that could really use an upgrade like Tracks I think people would be a lot more interested / excited.

As I watched this, I had the same thought over and over. Badcube has had a spotty history and their last couple of releases seemed to be doing more things right and, maybe, we were on the cusp of seeing them turn a corner for the better. However, while this Sideswipe is okay, it feels like someone was digging in a back room, found a sketch book with an old plan to do this guy and said, "Oh yeah, we did toy with the idea of doing Sideswipe. Let's flesh this old idea out a bit and boom, new figure." It feels like a bit of a step back. Plus, while I gripe about MP not being perfect as I feel something with the moniker of the word Masterpiece SHOULD be, the actual Sideswipe mold DID turn out pretty well and though a few things are done better here, was he needed? Like, Starscream is a mold that is trash, so Meteor, arguably, was definitely needed. With this release, I kinda just shrug and say okay, options are good...I guess.

I bought Recon/Red Alert because I want something better than the "fake-arms" Takara version. I just got mine today and I'm completely happy with its solidity. My only complaint is wishing that the side windows tabbed into the forearms, but it's minor considering friction holds them in place just fine. Otherwise, the legs and shoulders peg together nicely, and the reason Bobby's having problems with the chest is that he's got it mistransformed. He's only got the backpack slid in halfway. Once it's all the way in, it holds everything in place really nicely.

I got Recon. I think you might like him better. I, too, was surprised by the lightness - and by how much different of a product it is than Huff v2. On Recon, the back pack secures more firmly, the arms transform differently and, in my opinion, the face sculpts are better. I originally passed on Takara's Sideswipe because I thought the vehicle mode was a mess of transformation seams. Eventually I caved in and bought G2 'swipe (maybe the black hides the panel lines better, maybe I just love G2) and I'm glad I did. While I get where you coming from on Badcube vs Takara for 'swipe; I would judge Badcube as having a much clearer win on Red Alert.

I just bought this guy and received him yesterday (thanks CoronaVirus) and comparing him to the MP-12 that I have, other then the knees which felt incomplete as you mentioned (and the weird shoulder canon piece) i'm actually liking it better, the plastic does "feel" different but the original MP-12 wasn't all that better. You also kind of "mis" transformed his chest area which sticks out thru the video. As for the Backpack, the MP-12 is also pretty bad. The reason i got him, so I would have 3 different Lamborghini's with each transforming totally different (Red Alert I kept the Masterpiece version and of course SunStreaker).

At least for me, the only improvement over the Takara is the chest (imho). It seems to be more posable, that's also a plus. The face sculpt seems a bit off to me, like when two people aren't related but the faces have some resemblance. It happens to be a transformer who is also a red lambo in alt-mode (I can't remember if transformers have rules or laws to get different alt-modes so they aren't confused with each other). It looks like sideswipe, but it doesn't feel like this is sideswipe (once again, imho). And I see that you decided to get Sunstreaker! "Good Gooooood" (Read with Emperor Palpatine's voice)

Great review. To the point, no beating around the bush, and fair in its pros and cons. For me who was on the edge of trying this one, you definitely helped in my decision to let it pass. Would have kept MP-12 anyway though. Cause he's my first MP ever and, well, he's awesome.
@jeremynelson79206 жыл бұрын
I wanted these so bad just for the collapsible chest and the fact that Alert has his doors hanging along the arms like the toy and I believe animation. My problem is that Steamroll is significantly taller than the official Sideswipe and Sideswipe is supposed to be a tad shorter than Sunstreaker. That was the deal breaker for me since I'm a sunbow chart scale nut.

Good morning Bobby! I have been waiting on this review from you. I was shocked that BadCube was going to make both sideswipe and Red Alert, since Official versions are already out. I’m going to hold off on getting this guy, because I don’t think he is a better replacement than Takara’s Sideswipe. His robot mode does seem cleaner than Lambor, but I agree that his proportions do seem to be off. And his price point is twice what XTB Crackup is, And I think Crackup is a far better figure for the money. He doesn’t have the premium finish that most Masterpiece figures have, and I think that’s what is turning me off in getting this. I do know that their Red Alert does have a completely different transformation than Sideswipe, and I hope you get the chance to review that figure as well. Considering the $85.00 price, I think my money is going to get me an XTB Cliffjumper over this. Thanks as always for the great review!

It's just kind of strange that this doesn't come off at all like a BadCube product, and seeing all this, I hope it's not their attempt at a new standard. At least it seems to transform easier, a little bit.

I've bought their Trailbreaker, Warpath, Outback and Sunstreaker. Just got Steamroll today, and yes, it is the easiest one of theirs to transform. Still complicated, but you're not fighting too-tight parts. Once you figure out where stuff goes, parts tab in with satisfying snugness.

I have an MP Sideswipe, so I had no intention of replacing him, but I have not snagged a Red Alert yet, so I was thinking I would pick up the BadCube version, but after seeing this review, I am not so sure. I don't like how those knees look. For some reason it bugs the shit out of me. I noticed that this Sideswipe transforms a little differently from their Red Alert, which is awesome so it is not a straight up repaint. But they still share the same damned weird knees. BadKnees instead of BadCube, am I right? All kidding aside, the proportions do seem a bit off in the arms, which is unfortunate, because aside from those and the knees, I really dig the look of the bot mode over the official Sideswipe. I like the narrower and sleeker profile, and the alt mode is absolutely stunning, I feel it is spot on perfect. But at least I have Crackup, which is a 100% satisfying bot and alt mode Lambo for me. Solid review as always, Bobby!

To me the more accurate cartoon look does it for me. His head could be a bit bigger and you’re right about the cheapness but it just has the right look for my shelf. I just need a Cliffjumper, Jazz, Mirage, Bluestreak, Brawn, and Huffer to complete my season 1 G1 Autobots. Oh, and of course all the Dinobots. Damn, still a long way to go, and that’s not even mentioning the Decepticons. I do have Toyworlds Devastator though so that’s almost half of them right there. Lol. If you count Reflector and the Insecticons as 1 (which I am to make myself feel less overwhelmed). Stop typing me. Ok. Now! Stop! ✋ Sorry! NO! ✋

MP Sideswipe's door gaps and thin red paint over the dark plastic allowing it to look too dark on the roof, A pillars, and doors always really bothered me. Takara should do a new one that has the superior head and face sculpt of MP-12 and the great-looking alt mode of SteamRoll.

I like Badcube, but I don't really see why we "needed" these figures from them. There are other figures that I feel would have been a better use of their resources. Maybe they should have done Tracks? I would have liked to have seen a MP Skids as that I believe would complete the Ark Crew right? I honestly kind of lost a little love for them with Huff 2.0 and Piper as I was really looking forward to those figures, but they were sub par and they were really the only ones doing them...I don't even count XTB versions as they are in no way a MP styled figure and can't even stand, but I digress. I wonder if Takara is going to redo a MP Sideswipe with new Engineering for Cartoon accuracy now that this seems to be the direction they are going....only time will tell I suppose, but I think that the reveal of MP OP 3.0 kind of sets the stage.
