@@winterladyI know right? The live-action is so well done! One of the best live-action I’ve seen. I had so much goosebumps and am so loving this! Agreed. I think one of the weakest points was the acting of some of the younger people, but that just takes time. I’m very hopeful they will be able to dial in and make it really excellent. I was so scared they were going to cancel given Netflix’s recent record of canceling any of the really good fantasy/fiction

Yes! I love the cast, and as young actors the main cast will definitely grow in experience. They’ll be able to see the feedback & hopefully improve the dialogue & writing. Imo the casting choices, CGI, costuming, and sets are all great. I did love the show overall. Some of the ways they had combine episodes were very creative & worked well, like this episode, and some of the best parts of this series are the things they added/explored further.

27:45 Zuko and Sokka's actors are trained in martial arts, if I'm remembering correctly! Zuko's stunts were mostly done by his actor. I also remember reading that Sokka had to kind of "nerf" himself to show his inexperience. There's a really informative video that goes into the actors' other roles and backgrounds. I'll drop a link if I can find it in my watch history...

My favorite thing about this adaptation and what I wanted most was to see more of whats going on in the fire nation. So I was ecstatic to see how Zhao interacts with the fire lord, lieutenant Jee’s presence in the show and his dynamic with Zuko and Iroh, and Ozai not hesitating to hold Zuko’s accomplishment over Azula’s head in such a manipulative way. Great stuff

I think the issues are definitely real. from a standalone show standpoint this live action is fine. But as an adaptation there are issues. For example, Kataras character is all messed up here. Even though casting is on point, kataras seems to be missing her sassyness and her strict personality towards aang and sokka. Instead of katara being the more motherly role, they've given that role to sokka instead. Sokka is also already pretty brave and dependable and responsible. Which is not like his character in the animation. By having sokka already be like this, it ruins the character development, because well, sokkas already developed. Still miles better than the movie though lol

I've seen complaints AND praises for the exact same things: casting, script, effects, acting, additions, deletions, sets, etc. For example: "Sokka is perfect." "He doesn't look like Sokka at all." 🤷‍♀️ Fans, especially super fans, each have a distinct emotional attachment to something about it. If the thing they cared about deeply was missed or altered too much, nothing was going to make up for it. It's not without flaws, but I've heard people who are now interested in watching the cartoon since they saw the live action, and that's AWESOME! I'm looking forward to the next 2 seasons.

Totally agree. I love ATLA and i can catch up every differences in this adaptation vs the original serie, but as long as they portrait the characters well enough to see their personalities and motivations, I'll think is a great serie from netflix. We can't forget is an ADAPTATION if i want to view or feel the same as i feel seen the original version, i'll just wachted the original, because is imposible to replicate that kind of thing. Not only buget and CGI, also because the nostalgia. I like this casting, and the effects are not bad at all. Also I feel that the added cuts are interesting, they add up to understand the context for a person that may never been introduced to ATLA world before. I'll just enjoy this, and if I find a gap i'll be critic, but not die for it,

As a person that watches ATLA at least twice a year i honestly think they did a great job adapting this amazing show to live action, i knew going in that they would change things. Gordon Cormier doesnt have any martial arts training but Dallas Lui and Ian Ouley both have training Ian is a black belt and did have to nerf himself in the second episode lol. I know the original creaters left the production of thw show long before they even started story boarding the live action, they said creative differences but honestly they got a better offer from nickelodeon studios to continue the avatar story.
@AlineSantos.wolf3n
@AlineSantos.wolf3n 6 ай бұрын
I believe in the creative differences cause they could make both and get more money lol.... but also, tell me HOW this Katara will have the rage to bend blood and go after the fire guy who killed her mother ??? She got totally meh in this... wich also makes me afraid for Toph next season... :/
@bri281
@bri281 6 ай бұрын
@AlineSantos.wolf3n she didn't learn blood bending because of her rage, she learned blood bending out of necessity, in a split second decision that ment life or death for her brother and her best friend. Now later when hunting the southern raiders she did use it in anger, because at that point they've spent the better part of a year being hounded by zuko, azula, and the fire lord then when they put forth a plan that should've worked their friends and family get captured and spread throughout the fire nation imprisoned, THEEEN when she tells the story of watching her mother die and who did it she's given the opportunity to focus her anger and frustration on a singular person and although she still feels that anger, frustration and resentment she realizes that killing him won't bring her mother back and won't make her feel any better. They'll have to build the anger up in katara over the next couple seasons, shes likely going to keep a lot of what she feels inside until it starts to leak out in small bursts of anger. Which is what happened in season 2 and 3 of atla. So no she didn't learn blood bending because of her rage, she did use it on a mostly innocent human to get info out of him though and that probably made her feel like shut afterward.

Jet was written just the same, he explains his loss, he comes across to Katara as the good guy, and yet he is a going about it all wrong. The only difference is the place. I think it was an excellent way to make sure we didn’t missed out on these amazing characters, while not having to build sets, for each story line. The way they incorporated Teo and his father, is great too. The end result is the same, the Machinist is working for the Fire Nation in exchange of safety and then gets the courage to stand up to the Fire Nation. It doesn’t have to happen at an Air Nomads Temple.

about the casting: Azula and Zuko are young - Azula is 14, Zuko around 16 but they weren't drawn like that (same with Mai). Animated Azula looks like a 30 year old and she was voiced by someone a lot older (than 14), too. Not to mention that she and Zuko were drawn as 'villain' coded with sharp features (it's a whole visual indications in animated stuff where a shortcut to showing 'character bad' is to give them more gaunt features rather than rounder ones). I like that they cast the live action to look a lot more like the character's real ages (and races because as a general rule, east asian people have rounder features) so when ppl complain that live action Azula and Zuko don't have sharp features I just scratch my head and think 'uuhh did you want them to get a 30 year old, non-Asian to play them or...?'

I geek culture hates change, because you can't compete with a memory. But the mixed reviews are a vocal minority screaming at a majority that loves it. This show is well cast, well acted, and visually stunning. Plus the stories are being woven together so well. You can't deny just how good Keyoshi was, and what they're doing with Iro and Zucko is special. The show is doing right by the original, and making changes you have to make for live action.

For me, I don’t need a cookie cutter shot for shot remake of the cartoon. We have the original, we love the original, it would be impossible to do shot for shot remake when we already have the cartoon and it’s perfect. What I am loving about the live action is it is very clear that they understand the source material. The way they shoot certain scenes and the overlays of the original music score, the inclusion of things that were hinted at or that may be in the manga, I want to see that. I want them to mix it up a little and make the story work for them and I think for the most part they have. That’s not to say some live action episodes aren’t clunky, they are trying to shove a lot into 8 episodes and they combine them in sometimes strange ways. I appreciate the effort, I look forward to hopefully them completing the series and maybe including like zuko’s mom or something. I’d like to see that.

As a massive fan of the original show, I thoroughly enjoyed the live-action. I had two major complaints about changes that were made, one pertaining to a characterization change for a character in the next episode, and the other is in the episode Masks. Anyone who’s seen it probably knows exactly what I’m talking about. But that said, there was far more in this show that I really liked. Combining Jet’s and the Mechanist’s plots in this episode was brilliant. A later episode fixes one of my minor gripes of the original show on re-watches caused by a minor retcon about the spirit world. It brings lore that wasn’t established until The Legend of Korra, the comics, the novels, and the TTRPG back to the beginning of the series. The casting was brilliant, only one personal complaint there but the character hasn’t shown up yet. I’m excited to see what they’ll do for seasons 2 and 3

I'm so happy they have the go-ahead for seasons 2 and 3. It must be so hard to write an initial season without knowing whether you'll be able to continue it to a conclusion. Now they'll have breathing space and the ability to write episodes and characters with depth; they don't have to rush to get everything exposited - it would be awesome if they could actually extend the seasons to ten episodes each. They'll also be able to reflect on what they've done so far and correct any errors, touch things up a bit and have everything nicely paced.

It took me a few episodes in to realise that i never expected or hoped for this show to come close to the original, yet i kept comparing it. I was setting myself up for disappointment. I realised what i was most excited for, more than anything, was to relive this world that i love so much, and to see the bending and the cities in live action. And i got that! Personally, i find it easy to suspend my disbelief and im not one to easily spot CGI or bad directing and dialogue, so thats easy for me to overlook. Im just enjoying the ride and this world that i love come to life in live action!!

with only 8 episodes in the live action version, some content has to be skipped and some events condensed. case and point in the animated series Book Water (season 1 episode 10) was called "Jet" and season 1 episode 17 was the "Northern Air Temple" with Teo and his dad Sai. the live action is trying to use all the key characters and events, while skipping some others. Also events do change as Aang met Avatar Roku first in the Avatar state, but in the series he meets Avatar Kyoshi. However the series is being very true to the story and artistic vision of the animated series.

I don't think the issue some fans are having with the show is about how closely the characters resemble their animated versions, or even how closely the story follows the animated story. For me at least, I don't mind at all if the live-action characters look like their animated counterparts, it's more about how well they capture the characters (Zuko, Sokka, and the Fire Lord are amazing here). And story-wise some of my favorite parts of the live-action are where they deviate from or added to the animated series. Speaking for myself- my main issue is with some of the performances and the writing - they shove so much exposition in the dialogue that conversations feel unnatural and cheesy- they don't do it near as much as in the Shyamalan movie thankfully 😆. And I don't mind child actors who are still developing their skills either, I know they'll get better just like the HP kids. My biggest issue with the show was Iroh. I feel like he watched the 'Ember Island Players' episode and thought that was the real iroh. His stage-play style performance really grated on me for the first few episodes, but by the end of the season I really appreciated him. I've come around big time and i'm looking forward to the next season!

I started watching the first episode, but halfway through I turned it off because it felt boring to me. I didn’t quite understand why until I watched Dylan’s (Dylan is in trouble) video about it. It’s mostly the script and the directing that is my issue with the show. They explain everything all the time, often twice, and the way they changed some of the characters made them less likeable, not more than the original. I might try to watch it again, but I right now I’m too disappointed with the show cause I was actually really excited.

Cabbage merchant was in fact the original animation's VA reprising his role. He was super happy to have been invited back. These episodes are combining varying episodes from the animated version to condense the story but still keep the book on track. The biggest ocmplaint I've seen is people feel like all the characters' personalities have been stripped and they're just dull... nowhere near as dull as the movie version but also not the characters we came to love either. I personally thought this was nice. The characters are more mature, because we, the original audience, are also more mature. I don't like Katara and Sokka constantly at each others' throats though...

Imagine how hard it was to do the casting of this show. They had to find, not only good actors, but people who visually matched the orignal characters (witch is even harder than a book adaptation, cause we have visual standards, not only description), filled in the ethnic factor (all of foreign descent for an american show) and that could also stand to the physicality. Zuko's actor is giving one of the best performances in the show, he clearly matches the ethnicity of the Fire Nation and he is KILLING it on his martial arts skills. They even did that weiard ponytail , and there are people compalining about his face being too round! I know the show is not perfect, but it's far from being terrible. As an OG fan, I expected it to be better, but I think some hardcore fans' expectations are just impossible to reach. I just wish there weren't so many people spreading hate towards these actors. Imagine being a young actor, booking your first big role and getting complaints about the shape of your face? More empathy, please!!

An interesting difference from the animated series was that small stories during some of the "filler" episodes were drawn out to make a full show, but if not really driving the main story, can't really translate 100% because other story points need a different approach to make them good drama for themselves. You can't divide the team for an entire episode, but simply putting them on separate paths for a time in the same episode keeps the story moving without too many distractions. That will mean many details will change, but the overall story is told better in a 60-minute format, versus three 20-minute beginning-middle-end episodes. I don't think the stories of Jet and Sai would work as well as the whole plot of separate episodes, so weaving them together here gets the characters introduced (and probably for callbacks later) while not spending too much time on them.

I read a quote somewhere that I really resonated with. “Avatar is not as bad as I feared but not as good as I hoped.” For me personally I don’t like the handholding from the writers. The over explaining in the dialogue. Leave some stuff open for the audience to get. I have no problem with condensing the story and combining side stories. After all this is another adaptation and doesn’t have to be an exact copy. But I truly don’t like how they have written katara. She has been done dirty, and I’m not saying the actress was bad but her part of the script. I like Zuko’s actor. He really portraits the inner struggle of Zuko well. And Sokka has the right vibe. Aang is good to but sometimes he feels a bit forced with his acting. But he is young and I see his potential. Overall the series isn’t bad, but the animated series will stay my favorite version of it all. It has a soul that is really hard to recapture.

I think the fight scenes in this episode were pretty entertaining, and of course we all love "my cabbages!" I do feel like they crammed 4 stories into one episode though. And really I don't appreciate how they introduced Azula so quickly. It worries me that later episodes won't have the same impact as the animated series.

For me, I never really have issues with changing stories, I understand that any adaptation, especially with the change in medium from animation to live action, things are bound to change. And actually I enjoy them mixing up different stories and streamline them all into Omashu, think it’s a brilliant move that allows them to do all those stories without having to trim them out. And it also shows them understanding the themes of various episodes and finding out what can fit together. My biggest issue with the show this season is that there’s a reliance on expositional dialogue, they seem to feel the need to really over-explain everything. And I think they need to just trust that their actors can convey what is needed and their audience are smart enough to understand without them spelling it out explicitly. Also, my other issue is that they made Katara a little too soft spoken and timid, she is missing some of her trademark throwing-hands attitude. I think the directors and writers need to allow Katara’s actress to have more fiery expressions and scenes because she’s entirely capable of bringing it, but they seem to want to keep muting her performance. Overall I think the show is decent, it has room to improve but this is a solid enough foundation.

I agree, Katara's toned down personality and the reliance on direct exposition are the biggest problems with the show. I could tell the show would have an exposition problem in the first episode with Aang's long monologue about not wanting to be the Avatar. They really could have shown us that instead of having the actor tell us exactly what he's feeling and why.

I think having Jet bomb certain places in the city to get rid of fire nation spies works here. Where in the animation it was flooding a whole village to get rid of a few spies. Both having him not care about all the innocent people he hurts. I think Teo and his father should've been in a different episode than Jet. If you take Jet out of this episode having Teo here could work. But having them both in the same place against each other does feel crammed in... I'm okay with them changing stuff but I don't think it works all in one episode.

Heyyy guys!! Just wanna say I love your reactions and your love for this history! TBH I was a little anxious about this adaptation, specially after the news that the original creators bounced out. But I must say that I was surprised to end up really liking this adaptation. There are quite a few things I didn’t like in terms of some scene changes (for plot purposes), and some of the changes with some characters, I will not be stating those because of SPOILERS. but there is a lot to love in this adaptation in my opinion. I got super emotional watching the first episode, I watched the series when I was a child and preteen and pretty much every year since I was about 14 years old. So it’s safe to say I’m a long time fan, hahahaha, this story means so much to me, and it’s become my comfort show. ANYWAY, I understand the people who are a bit disappointed, but honestly I think I could’ve been a lot worse (like the movie LOL).

Some of the criticism I've seen has been based on literal impossible standards - people expecting them to follow the animated series 1:1 and improve upon it, while also saying the animated series was perfect so they shouldn't have even bothered. Like, some of the criticism is warranted, but people need to recognize that 1) this is telling its own story, 2) the first season of ATLA was episodic at times so stories would have to be merged or dropped in this format, and 3) if you think the original was perfect and has no room for alterations, maybe the adaptation isn't for you. For example, if you want a show for kids under 10, the animated series is probably your best bet. This series shows the brutality of war a little more upfront, but is that really bad when it gives you the choice of watching the kid-friendly version or the version that shows the reality of a century-long war by factions that use elements to do battle?

There are enough new tweaks, to keep this series interesting, while keeping true to the animated series. (Btw, 3&4 were my gf's most disliked, because of the way that one of the characters were cast. As someone who is an OG fan since animated aired in 2005, I'm honestly pretty OK with most of the changes. There are even a couple of rare places I think the live action did it more justice. In the next episode, you're about to come into the first of some little additions unique to this version that absolutely wrecked my tear ducts. I love the vast majority of the cast, with a special shoutout to Dallas as Zuko who I think has an amazing career ahead of him. And yes, he's been doing martial arts since he was little kid and did most of own stunts here. Where I have to admit the negatives mostly boils down to writing and pacing. While acknowledging gems of scenes here and there, it is also true that I feel like this season suffers from a dialogue problem. There's quite a bit of clunky, badly-read, exposition-heavy, or cheesy lines. There's some scenes that get obliterated by break-neck pacing and condensing to the point that even my husband who is a blank slate to this series noticed it. There's a lack of meaningful interaction with our current main trio that leaves some of their characterization kind of hollow. I wish ideally they'd gone for 10 episodes instead of 8 just to allow for them to breathe, but I'd even take an extra 5-10 minutes per episode starting at 2 to accomplish this. Whether this all is due to the pandemic, child actor labor laws, strikes, budget, or some combo of the above, it's hard to hand-wave it all away. Still, I remain in good faith because when it IS good, it is REALLY good, and I can only imagine that the security of 2 more seasons, and the cast having more rapport and experience, and hopefully them ironing out the wrinkles in the writers room, it can really only go up from here.

Before anything fun fact! The guy who voiced the Cabbage Merchant in the animated show is the same actor in the live action show. So he literally was brought to life! So yes, Jet, Omashu, Sai and Teo are all their own episodes and different stories. They had to combine due to time restraints. Considering a lot of things this episode did flow well. Yeah some things are different, but it kept fairly true to pay homage to the animated show. My favorite part was the fight scene between Zuko and Aang! I agree feels very Jackie Chan like, though I would disagree in the animated show Aang was very squirrely when he fought Zuko and Zuko was a gifted fighter beyond fire bending. It was very well done in this episode. Gripes about character designs like Zuko? Ehhh his scar could be bigger, but looks waaay better then the movie we shall not name. I think the actor is phenomenal and I love how he actually reached out to the original Zuko's VA for knowledge before he filmed. He has much respect and is a good match I feel. Despite it not being one to one, I only have one real gripe with the show, but I wont mention it till the episode passes for you guys.

I'm really glad you guys are having a positive reaction to the live adaptation! Since you asked, a couple of things: All the actors went through a 6 month "boot camp" but zuko's, sokka's, and aang's actors had previous martial arts experience. Ian Ousley (sokka) won a world championship in weapons and competed in Taekwondo for 6 years (fun fact: one of his original inspirations WAS the last avatar!). Dallas Lui (zuko) competed internationally in Karate and has done martial arts since he was 5. Aang's actor, Gordon, did beginner classes when he was young but he's also a very talented skateboarder which helped him pick up moves faster! They combined several storylines into one for episodes 3 and 4, which sort of worked, sort of didn't. Some of them feel just kind of slapped in there and others are smoother. I really love how they're giving more of a back story to how Ozai is treating Azula as it is a more plausible storyline for her personality than her just being a sociopathic 14 year old. Ozai seems to literally pit them against each other which I think is a cool story choice! In the animated series, Jet's story is they're blowing a dam to take out a fire nation village with both soldiers and innocent civilians in it. Teo and the mechanist's storyline is that they moved into one of the air temples and are renovating it but also destroying the sacred parts of it and the cultural murals. They find out the mechanist is secretly making weapons for the fire nation. Aang intervenes and sends the soldiers packing, the mechanist chooses to switch sides, and they win in a battle against the fire nation where they're storming the air temple. The gAang uses "air power" and sokka's balloon invention to win. I don't know that these stories combine super well. It's not terrible but it just sort of takes away from the impact of each storyline. For example, we don't get a pay off for sokka's ingenuity with the balloon. They just sort of use it as a way to show that Sokka's true talent is not being a warrior like he always thought but as an engineer/ creative plan maker. In the animated, he was really both so it's interesting to see them shy away from his warrior storyline so much (in combo with a scene in a future ep). A couple more storylines are a bit half heartedly thrown into the next episode. And they changed part of one of the character's personalities which I wasn't a fan of personally. But y'know, OG cabbage guy was in there so we can forgive some story clunkiness! 😆❤

I love ATLA and I think they did a good job with this show. Is it perfect, no, and it was never going to be perfect because nothing will ever hold a candle to its source material or the nostalgia associated with it. Expecting it to is just asinine. It feels like most people just can't enjoy things at face value and are always looking for something to complain about, it's sad. The point of media like this is entertaining escapism, if you're spending your time and energy nitpicking things you ain't escaping sh*t and I am deeply sorry that you have either somehow lost your ability to enjoy things, or that someone has taken that from you.

As for the question of how much they are condensing things they are putting 3 story lines into one with this episode. The Mechanist were in one of the Air Temples and Anaag was not happy about the sqwaters in the temple. Jet was in forest region and yes it was a Dam he was gonna destroy to flood a village. And Omashu was it's own story with them meeting the King. So with all three in different locations it makes the world feel bigger with things going on in their own regions. With the fewer number of episodes there is less time to establish a setting so they have to put things together to save on time. Though I know some don't like reworking the story.

Sorry in advance for the novel I’m about to give you! As a big fan of the original series, and as someone who has seen it multiple times, I would have been totally happy with a one-to-one live action version. I understand why that’s not feasible, so going into this series I was ready to make concessions on the story and characters. I don’t care at all if they don’t have quite the same facial structure or height as the animated characters. It’s a very superficial complaint that I won’t entertain, especially when they did such a good job maintaining the general ethnicities of the characters. For the most part I like the live action version just fine, however, there are things that bother me a lot in the series. Other people have mentioned the exposition and over explaining that happens throughout this season, so I won’t get too much into that, although it is annoying. I don’t really care for how they’ve aged up the entire thing. Not just the action and how graphic some of the scenes are, but also the characters and how they’re written. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, especially because I know a large part of the audience watched the original series as children, and of course we’re now grown adults, so to an extent it makes sense, but it does mean that we lose a lot of the original charm of the series. I think one of the biggest losses is characterization of the kids and the lack of goofiness and silliness, especially in Aang and Sokka. Aang is 12 years old! He should act like it! And instead, they’ve given this poor child actor really strange lines that sound like they ought to come from a wise old man, and unfortunately, I just don’t think he pulls it off very well (because he’s a child and it feels unnatural, not because he’s a bad actor).The show deals with a lot of really heavy topics, like the genocide of the air benders, and the goofy, silly humor was a way to offset these heavy topics to make it watchable and not depressing. Literally comic relief while simultaneously offering important life lessons to kids. They’ve also aged up the main characters to the extent that I don’t see them as kids as much as young adults. In the original series I think Sokka was meant to be closer to 16, but in the live action version he seems to be more like 18 or 19. In this third episode, Katara was play acting as Jetts wife when they were trying to enter the city of Omashu , but in the original series I believe she’s meant to be 13 or 14? I cannot imagine a 13 or 14-year-old girl being able to pass as someone who is old enough to be married, which leads me to think that they have aged up Katara to be closer to 16 in the live action version. Overall these changes are fine, and since Aang’s crush on Katara has been completely left out, there’s no reason why they shouldn’t age up Katara and Sokka. But again, it means that the goofy humor that we got in the original series would seem out of place coming from these slightly older characters. This is only the third episode, so I won’t go too far into other characterization differences because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say that in the next episode one of the characters has a change in personality that I just hate. HATE. I’m interested to hear your overall thoughts at the end of the series, and how you all think they handled certain character arcs. TLDR; In general, I don’t mind the mash up of plot points because it’s only an eight episode season, but I think the writing and alterations of the characters’ personality traits could use some work.

For me I thought it's meh so far. I'm not expecting them to stick strictly to the original storyline, but the part that I didn't like is the fact when they mixed up the story telling and the events, they didn't do it in a logical manner. As a result of this, many of the storyline and character setups no longer work,. Spoiler alert below for those that haven't seen the original series. For example, in the original series, Aang and the gang went to the North Pole for Aang to master waterbending, and in the process the fire nation army followed them and invaded the Northern Water Tribe to capture Aang. In that arc, it made sense that the gang would take their time getting to the North Pole. But in the live action, Aang was warned of "imminent and catastrophic danger" by Avatar Kyoshi that is coming to the North Pole. It made zero sense why they would delay on the way there, and the explanation they gave "I need to also save these people" feels very weak. In addition, every stop they make in the following episodes just feels like them being grossly irresponsible.
