Back to the Shire and middle earth we go!
Badd Medicine here and its back to The Lord of the Rings reaction. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield, on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the Company continues East, encountering along the way the skin-changer Beorn and a swarm of giant Spiders in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous Wood-elves, the Dwarves journey to Lake-town, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all - a creature more terrifying than any other; one which will test not only the depth of their courage but the limits of their friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself - the Dragon Smaug.
WHAT KIND OF CLIFF HANGER WAS THAT?! Overall, a good movie. We understand were some are coming from when they say it didn't need to be 3 movies. But we did get 3 movies. Let's go to the final movie and possibly the last time in the shire?

Ancalagon the black was one of my favorite, considering if he was still alive. It would've been very difficult to kill him and how much damage he would've done. Smaug however was just a small drake and cared only for Erebor's gold. And idk if Smaug would swore loyalty to Sauron.

It's actually been about 200 years since Smaug attacked. It took place in the Third Age the year 2770, and the year that the Quest for Erebor happens is 2941 (a little nerd fact for ya there). Dwarves have longer lifespans than humans but shorter than elves who are immortal, and live for centuries. It is however 60 years prior to the events of Lord of the Rings.

​@@guintar6661 I like the idea that he's spent most of that in the Woodland Realm, and as a result is very sheltered. Tolkien makes a point of saying the Silvan elves are less wise than their kin, partly because they haven't seen Valinor. It makes sense that, with the events of the Hobbit movies and the mission he's sent on afterwards, he wises up a bit.

@@Caiyde No no, Legolas was atleast half Sindar, since we don't know much about his mother. They were a small minority but they were wiser and more noble than the Silvan elves. Also it's unknown what he was doing before the Lord of the Rings, but seeing how close he was with Aragorn shows that he did not just stay in the Mirkwood/Woodland Realm. Also it's fair to point out how old Legolas was, almost 3000yo. Time between the events of The Hobbit and LOTR is around 60 years, that's awfully short time for an elf to completely shift who they are. Hobbit-movies did Legolas dirty, wish they didn't include him at all.

@@heisenberg6680 I agree with a lot of points here, but worth pointing out Legolas's "canon" age was not one ever given by Tolkien but by Peter Jackson. All we know of his age in the books are rough estimates based on what we do know about him, which honestly isn't much! He could be 3,000 but I personally think that number is too high. He could even be as young as 500, and an elf that age would act far different from one thousands of years old. That being said, I do agree. His characterization was inconsistent and it felt like watching someone else. And as we know, he wasn't in the novel; they put him in the movies because they wanted to, not out of necessity.

@@eowynshieldmaiden His age is never confirmed, but I think almost 3000 was correct. Here are few takes from the books that make me believe that. ""It [the forest] is old, very old," said the Elf. "So old that almost I feel young again, as I have not felt since I journeyed with you children." He is traveling with someone who is 87 and another one being 139. Let's think he would be 500 and he wouldn't call them children. Elves come to age when they turn 50, and when they are 500, they are still young and growing up, not someone who calls slightly younger person "child". But the other one: ""These are the strangest trees that I ever saw," [Legolas] said; "and I have seen many an oak grow from acorn to ruinous age" Oaks live long af. The oldest oaks today are around 1000-2000 years old, while the oldest one being 15000+ years old. Give that Legolas is under 2000yr, he wouldn't have seen a single oak grow from "acorn to ruinous age". Seeing one do it would make him already 1000-2000 years old, but seeing many, it's safe to assume he is older.

I know not a lot of people will say this but, Lee Pace, who plays King Thranduil, the father of Legolas, does a phenomenal job in these movies. You'll see more of him in the last movie! Probably one of my favorites from the cast besides Martin Freeman (Bilbo). Great reaction guys! ☺️

@@artsysabs I love when he says that too! I'm actually disappointed they didn't have him speak more elvish in this. Lee NAILS the accent and the dialect when he does speak it. There's a deleted scene between him and Legolas where he does get to have a dialogue with his son in elvish. Such a shame it was cut out. Oh he is definitely handsome! One of my top celebrity crushes for sure! 😊

Some fun trivia: Luke Evans who plays Bard the Bowman, actually also plays his ancestor Girion in the flashback scene. And also the girls playing Bard’s daughters (who are wholly original creations not from the books) are actually the real life daughters of actor James Nesbitt who plays Bofur, one of the dwarves. And John Bell who plays Bard’s son Bain, grew so much between filming and reshoots that they had to have him bend at the knees a bit in certain shots so he wouldn’t look like his height changed.

Smaug is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. You should see all the behind the scenes footage of him recording the voice. He wore the CGI special suit and crawled on the ground and actually acted out the Smaug scenes as he did the voice. It's a sight to see. 🐉🐲

I would just like to say Thandruil is a very complex character and there is much more to him that what you might think. He is very proud but also extremly protective over his own. He is harsh but not unreasonable and he has a very tragic backstory, which explains why he is so protective and also so hung up on these jewels.

Elvenking is definitely very complex and even the book The Hobbit which is sometimes dismissed as children's book :) has way more nuanced perspective, though I feel that in the films my only problem with his portrayal is that he plays him way too harsh, and cold, the Elvenking of the book was merciful and good ruler, there is a bit of disservice to the charcter of Elvenkjing Thranduil, he had kindness and compassion which I think movie version lacks a bit (the weird invented backstory and that weird scene with the burns on his face in Desolation of smaug are kind of unnecessary in my opinion), Thranduil had his reasoning for imprisoning the Dwarves and it was jusfied from his perspective, but the films kind of play up the drama here. There is also a bit of moments from the book which were missing in the movies, like Thranduil being more into peaceful resolution instead of war, as Elvenking says in book: "Long will I tarry, ere I will begin this war for gold." The Elvenking said" The book mentions weakness for treasure (which films build up on more and connect into something overplayed almost, with the invented backstory) though he is not so overwhelmed with it.

The fish that were dumped into the barrels to hide Bilbo and the dwarves were actually real fish, with a few rubber props mixed in with them. At one point Adam Brown (who plays Ori) had 400 pounds of fish dumped directly on top of him! Made even worse by the fact that Brown suffers from ichthyophobia, which is phobia of fish!!

I went to the midnight premiere for this one, and when it ended on that cliffhanger, the whole theater erupted in denial and “WHAT??? WHAT??? YOURE ENDING IT THERE???” Testament to how hooked we were that we all were desperate to see how it played out

A couple of points of context: Tolkien very much drew on existing mythology for his creations. Not directly copying anything, but including elements. Smaug draws heavily on the Norse Saga of Fafnir. Dragons in Tolkien's world are very intelligent and have hypnotic style abilities (which is how Smaug forced Bilbo to take off the ring,) but with crucial weaknesses. They cannot resist gold or a puzzle. In order to understand Smaug's reasoning for not immediately killing Bilbo, its important to understand his perspective. You know that one day, maybe in 10 years maybe in 100, that someone is gonna come looking for the gold. And the first intruder to come looking is this little guy with no shoes, dressed a little bit like a dwarf, but doesn't smell like a dwarf. So immediately Smaug is on Bilbo "Who are you and where do you come from?" Telling a dragon your name is a very bad idea, because if a dragon knows your name it has power over you. Smaug is trying to figure out "Okay, what exactly is the threat here? If I kill this dude is there gonna be a massive army outside looking to force its way in or is he acting alone?" Bilbo quite simply fascinates Smaug, because he's never seen anything quite like Bilbo. Because he's been sleeping on his hoard for so long, gold and gems have become embedded in Smaug's hide. This leads to the epithet "Smaug the Golden." Hence the scenes with the forges and statue. Also, piss Smaug off enough to go to Lake-town. Smaug's erupting dragon fire is based upon a real weapon of war called the Liven's Projector. (Director Peter Jackson is a massive WW1 nerd and did a programme where he and a load of other people restored black and white WW1 video footage to full colour and audio.) You're right to be angry with Gandalf saying he was gonna meet the Dwarves there and then doesn't. But the revelation that the Necromancer is in fact Sauron drives all other considerations from his mind. This is the first time in Millennia that Sauron has been seen 'alive' and most believed him completely impotent, unable to exert himself on the world unless he recovers the ring. (Which is why he set up camp in Dol Guldur, he wanted to search the river that Isildur died in.)

I have twin nephews who were around 8 years old when this came out. I was raised on all things Tolkien but this was their first run-through. I remember sitting between them in the theater and saying, "Just to warn you there's gonna be a scene with spiders that will be kinda scary." They rolled their eyes and just looked at me like, "Come on." But when the time came I had two 8yo burrowing their heads into my arms.😅 Now they're taller than me, and black belts, but I still smile 😊 when I remember that moment.

Great job, Oak! You'd definitely thrive in Middle-Earth! The light of the Sun wasn't very specific in shining directly upon the keyhole, and when that opportunity was missed there was still the Moon, which in reality is also a mirror that reflects the sun's light which makes it shine. 7:19 In the books Beorn was a bit more disrespectful toward the Dwarves, but was still even more helpful, as not only did he supply them with ponies to ride, he also gave them food and followed after them in his bear form and protected them from any orc attacks without the Dwarves ever knowing until they reached the forest. In Addition to being able to change into Bears, Beorn could also speak with all animals and would even have meetings with the wild Bears in the region on certain nights and speak with them of events that were happening around middle-earth, one of these meetings happened while Bilbo and the Dwarves were staying with him which was how he learned that the Goblins were after Bilbo and his friends and later killed a Goblin scout and his warg that was nearby. 10:04 This is strictly the movie's doing as in the Books Bilbo didn't need the ring to understand the Spiders as the spiders could speak and be understood. 11:23 Although the Dwarves were eventually captured by the Wood Elves, this is not how it happened in the books, in the books while walking through the forest, the party encountered visions of a feast in the woods, which unknown to them was Thranduil's royal court. Different members of the party tried to enter the clearing where the feast was being held, but each time darkness would fall and the interrupter fell into a deep sleep. In this manner was Thorin separated from the company, and captured by Thranduil. After that the Dwarves met the Giant Spiders and were captured by them and later freed by Biblo and escape and it was then that the Wood Elves captures everyone but Bilbo, thanks to the ring, Legolas however has no part in the story, this is strictly the movie doing and the girl elf Tauriel is not Tolkien Canon, she belongs solely to the movie series. Also the reason why Thorin and his company were imprisoned was because not only they enter Eleven lands without permission, but because they refused to tell the Elf king why had entered it, hence the Elf King did not know about their quest and the dragon 13:10 Again the movie differs here from the books, Thranduil had no real relationship with Thorin's grandfather or his people nor did he warn him the Dragon possibly coming, given the Eleves and Dwarves mutual dislike of one another. the Elves Generally kept to themselves in the Forest, save to trade with humans, just as the Dwarves generally kept to themselves in their mountain, save to trade with those same humans as well. Furthermore Thranduil was not hideously burn by Dragons nor did he fight them, however in fairness he did take part in many great wars, including the Battle of the Last Alliance and the Eleven Wars against the Dark Lord Morgoth. On a interesting note Thranduil's underground Castle here is based on the Elven Castle of Menegroth (which means the Thousand Caves) and was the capital of the Great Elven Kingdom of Doriath, which was one of the three Greatest Elven Kingdoms of ancient times, it ruled by the great Eleven King Thingol. He was the Father of Lúthien, who was said to be the fairest woman ever to live. Lúthien is also the same elven woman that fell in love with the mortal Man named Beren, whom both Aragon and Arwen are doth descendants of Like Thranduil's Kingdom of Mirkwood, the Kingdom of Doriath was a forest Kingdom and it's capital Menegroth was built underground in a mountain, and was said to be bigger, grander and even more beautiful than Thranduil's castle that we see here, and was a pale imitation of it, which Thranduil own father Oropher had tried to recreate it when he founded the Mirkwood Kingdom. Funny enough both Menegroth and Thranduil's castles/halls were built not just by Elves, but by Dwarves as well back when relations between the two people were good. Though the most tragic thing about Doriath is that it's destruction was not caused by the Dark forces, it was caused by Dwarves and other Elves who each invaded the Kingdom to attain one of the three Silmarils that Beren had given to Thingol as his gift so to be allowed to marry Lúthien. The Dwarves part in the destruction of Doriath and the killing of the Elf King Thingol along with the fight over the Silmaril is what caused the great feud between Elves and Dwarves. 16:22 In the Books Elves didn't learn that the Dwarves had escape until long after the Dwarves had left, since they were having a feast/party at the time and the Elven guards were drunk and asleep, which was how Bilbo got the jail Keys, there was no battle nor orc attack, that is strictly movie, but the whole using barrels to escape is part of the book. 17:47 This is also strictly movie, as the Ringwraiths played no part in the book 18:35 Bard here played a much more major role as a character here in the movie than he did in the book and he was not a bargeman, he was a soldier who held protect the town, and he was more of a secondary character in the book who despite playing a important role in the book did not have many scenes involving him until near the end. Also the Dwarves simply entered Lake-town themselves and did not have to hide and were actually welcomed into the town in the hope of the wealth of the great mountain and the Dwarves would once again return to the people. Also Bard did not have any Children in the book, though he would later have a son, but he was never shown or mentioned. 20:15 There is a belief among many Tolkien fans, that Tolkien partly based Lake-town off the city of Venice and it's beginnings, as like Venice the Master of Lake-town was elected to their position “from among the old and the wise” and the Doges of Venice, who were elected to their offices for life from among the leading merchant families. The Venetian Doges were not paid much so they maintained their trading businesses, much like the Master of Lake-town, who thought of “trade and tolls … cargoes and gold, to which habit he owed his position.” Also Venice, was built on several small islands in a lagoon in north-eastern Italy and as it grew it developed it famed river-like streets, which we again see Lake-town having. 20:58 The Windlance/Scorpion is strictly movie and it did not exist in the book, however the Black arrow did exist, though the movie made it much bigger than it was in the book, as despite being a special arrow and had been made by Thorin's grandfather, for Bard's ancestor Girion the former Lord of Dale, it was still just the size of a regular arrow. 23:30 In the Book all the Dwarves left, none were left behind and again the movie did it own thing along with the Orc attack on the village 37:54 Athelas also known as Kingsfoil here is a call back to the LOTR, it the stuff that Aragon tells Sam to look for to help treat Frodo after he has been stab by the witchking, it is also the stuff that Aragon uses in the book to heal Faramir and Eowyn from their wounds. 39:37 The Dwarves never followed after Bilbo, they stayed outside the entire time in the book and after learning that Bilbo had taken a gold cup just like that story of Beowulf I mentioned in my last comment of the first Hobbit movie, about how the Hobbit story was based on that story. Smaug went after the people of Lake-town, knowing they had help Bilbo and his friends after Bilbo had called himself Barrel-rider, which linked him to Lake-town. 39:57 The orc here is Azog's son Bolg and in the books he is the one that is leading the orcs and their armies, not Azog 41:00 This whole fight with Smaug is the movie doesn't happen in the book.

Thorin became mean again because of the Dragon Sickness (I think) - the same one his grandfather had when he became obsessed with gold. It affected Thorin when he came back to Erebor and was close again to this giant hill of gold. If I remember correctly Dragon Sickness is a curse Smaug put on the gold by spending so much time with it in the books. Somebody correct me

The book mentions something like that: "But also he did not reckon with the power that gold has upon which a dragon has long brooded, nor with dwarvish hearts. Long hours in the past days Thorin had spent in the treasury, and the lust of it was heavy on him." It is sort of implied that there is some dark influence from a treasure hoard kept long by a dragon on those particularly susceptible to greed and avaricious tendencies. "The old Master had come to a bad end. Bard had given him much gold for the help of the Lake-people, but being of the kind that easily catches such disease he fell under the dragon-sickness, and took most of the gold and fled with it, and died of starvation in the Waste, deserted by his companions." Personally I always viewed it as a sort of malicious imprint of the will of the dragon, a residue of dark power (the dragons after all DO have some magic abilties, the famous 'dragon-spell' mind affecting power they wield). "Bilbo was now beginning to feel really uncomfortable. Whenever Smaug's roving eye, seeking for him in the shadows, flashed across him, he trembled, and an unaccountable desire seized hold of him to rush out and reveal himself and tell all the truth to Smaug. In fact he was in grievous danger of coming under the dragon-spell." But it's also not so overt, it's partly mundane partly magical because it affects those who already have in them that bit of greed (and probably to speculate all it requires to lift this is probably an act of generosity, Dain did not fell to such influence and he shared the treasure justly afterwards). In any case the dragon-sickness is in some way similar but not the same as effect of the Seven Rings of the Dwarves, wielded by the dwarf-lords, the great kings of the Dwarves, were also seriously affected in mind, though the mind control that Sauron intended wasn't successful, the Seven Rings managed to corrupt the dwarf lords somewhat making them greedy and Thrór actually held one of the Seven Rings forged in Eregion long ago. "..."...Thrór, now old, poor, and desperate, gave to his son Thráin the one great treasure he still possessed, the last of the Seven Rings, and then he went away with one old companion only, called Nár. Of the Ring he said to Thráin at their parting: ...... 'This may prove the foundation of new fortune for you yet, though that seems unlikely. Benedict Cumberbatch provided the voices for Smaug & the Necromancer. As with the Harry Potter & Lord of the Rings films, you really need to check out the behind the scenes & extra footage. There is a featurette that Peter Jackson filmed during the same time as he made the movies. The behind the scenes clips of having to film the dwarves running to Beorn's house & riding down the river is really fun to watch. I think Martin Freeman(?) said in an interview that the river scene was one of his favorite days on set because they all had such a blast filming that whole sequence.

The eagles are the equivalent of guardians in the third age of middle earth when this was set, during the early days they were messengers of Manwë, there purpose is not to interfear. What's not explained in the LOTR movies is the Eagle that helped Gandalf owed him a favour. In the hobbit, they helped due to their hatred for orcs and goblins, of which their numbers were rising at this time!

What I like about the knowing a good amount of Tolkien Lore is that Dragons in Middle Earth originally didn't have wings, but they were bred to have them later, and also Smaug is about average size to smaller for a Dragon. The first Dragon created by Sauron's master was in the story The Legend of Turin, it didn't have wings, and was substantially larger, like 3 to 5 times larger (if not more so) than Smaug, and didn't have wings. It's name was Glaurung, and was killed with a single stab by Turin Turambar into their stomach with his black blade Gurthang, which meant Iron of Death.

4:00 I thought about suggesting it in the first movie but I figured I'd hold off til this scene. You guys thought Thorin had all the luck in the world that he'd have the map, key, and someone to translate it on the only night it could happen. With this flashback, was it all luck or Gandalf subtly influencing events from behind the scenes? 11:50 Don't know if you guys caught that one of the dwarves is Gimli's father. His mistreatment as seen here adds to Gimli's grudge against elves. I also like seeing Legolas as a bit of a hot-headed racist a-hole in his younger days. Really shows his growth that his future best friend is a dwarf. Fun fact: Legolas was never in the novel. The Hobbit was written before LotR so his character wasn't around yet. He was added in because it just makes sense he would've been around especially in his father's home turf and he's just that awesome. 30:30 Answer's right. Oak just needed to take a beat. Gandalf didn't show because he was getting the smackdown from Sauron. Also something you guys missed from the extended version is that Thorin's father, Thrain, was kept prisoner there. Gandalf attempted to help him escape before they were cornered by Sauron and his army. Thrain gave Gandalf a message for Thorin before Thrain was killed by Sauron. 36:10 He's been regressing multiple times before then. He's made several unreasonable decisions but you overlooked and defended him because he was still your homeboy. Even heroes are susceptible to negative influences and that sickness for gold that overtook Thorin's grandfather is now taking hold of Thorin. 44:30 A lot of people hated the ending but I thought it was a fun cliffhanger. It leaves you wanting more. The heroes fought, lost, and now everyone is f*cked. Between this and the Deathly Hallows Part One, it wound up preparing me for the future cliffhangers that would be the infamous Negan eeny-meeny-miny-moe introduction and Infinity War's Snap.

Fun fact in case it hasn't been mentioned, but in the book, on the topic of blame, it's not Bard's ancestor that the Master lays blame to but the dwarves themselves, for disturbing the dragon and bringing it down on them - and it comes later after the desolation of the dragon and not at the point it comes in the film :)

Cellar temperature is ok :) Some producers of beer in 18-19th century could stored beer in 5 - 7 C. They made floors of cellars from bricks too and then huge storages for ice and they brought ice from mountains at autumn or winter and then packed ice in cellars and then the ice slowly melting streamed by small suages drilled in brick floor all around the rooms with beers and this cold water cooled air in such cellar :)

By this point in the book the Dwarves knew about the ring so did Gandalf. But the ring was working on Bilbo and he lied about how he got it. You have to talk to Dragons in riddles. Dragons can hypnotize humans.

Gandalf going off to confront the Necromancer and discovering that it's actually Sauron is literally in his job description. He and all the other wizards were charged by the Elder King Manwë Súlimo, the King of Arda (Earth) to advise and persuade Elves and Men to resist Sauron. Sauron is the biggest threat, all others are secondary and therefore less important.

This is the installment that I enjoy the most and consider the good one in the Hobbit trilogy. I had a lot of fun with this one, because it felt like a true adventure. But what made me really like this movie was the battle with Smaug at the end. I lost track of time when I saw this in theaters and was so entertained that the moment the movie ended, I was disappointed that it was over.

The extended editions do a better job of explaining why Thranduil is so obsessed with the gems, despite warning Thror about greed, and is so protective of Legolas and his future. Watching the extended edition for the final film would be a good idea if you want to get the backstory.

A huge reason why there aren't that many big battle scenes in the Hobbit trilogy (excluding the third movie, where I felt like it was a bit too drawn out), is because the LotR trilogy was about preventing a world-scale disaser (Sauron's return), while the Hobbit is just about the dwarfes trying to reclaim their mountain, it's much smaller scale. All the necromancer, Sauron and pale orc stuff was added for the movies.

Dragon or no dragon Smaug is still terrifying. Meanwhile the other dragons of middle earth were like a bigger "wrym" or "wyverns." Some were flightless ground dragon like 2 or 3 times bigger than Smaug was. And the he was many of the "Dragons of the North" in middle earth. Middle Earth may seem small but you have to remember what else is around the planet and from the scale of the Lord of the Rings Middle Earth seems like pur Northern Hemisphere and the European continent all combined if not and that and then more. But to think the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit all supposedly take place in the 3rd Age time period of that world is just mindblowing

My fav dialogue from this part of the movie is that scene on the stairs to the palace. Its a group scene where everyone - Thorin, Bard, Master of Laketown, the citizens, and Bilbo - have their own motives and goals but most of them bad motives and goals. And the one who can see above it is Bard. Its very strange how his ability to see above other's interests, motives (gold, power) makes him the proper candidate for king :) As in Jordan Peterson's explanaition of ancient myths the hero is made king only becouse he wants to see more, above others, he wants to see dangers on the road at much more distance than most of his citizens. It is foresight what makes good kings in myths and fairytales. +++ the new trilogy of Jackson is one of the most political fantasy movies :) It shows the many factions of the good guys not yet reunited to fight against Sauron in LOTR. And it also gave us the motivation, the explanation behing Thranduils enmity towar dwarven king. In the book it seems that he arrested the dwarves for no apparent reason. Or only for tresspasing in his forest. In the movie we can absorb all the informations from Thorin and Thranduil and Legolas and Tauriel and Bard and then we can assume that Thranduils reasons are strictly political. His country is rich and it is also a fortress, what king would have liked to see another much richer country spring up at his borders? :) Erebor could be a rival for the forest kingdom. Another regional power in all of Rhovanion region. Thats why Thranduil doesnt like the idea of restoration of Erebor. And maybe thats why he didnt helped them against Smaug at first scenes :)
