The original LOS story is quite good but as a game story it is poor with zero story choices. Compare it to The Witcher 3 game with story choices for every quest and 15 variations of endings for the main game. In the LOS, the gameplay isn't too interesting and very light challenge but at least playing it blind you get some counterweight to how you get attached to the main characters.

A little detail: in the alternate ending footage that you saw... Ellie was not being played by her actor, Ashley Johnson. Johnson was busy that day and Ellie was just supposed to be an unconscious body anyway, so they decided to go ahead and just shoot without her. But they realized that it would be good to have someone fill in for her so that Troy Baker (Joel) has some believable weight to interact with & carry. Troy Baker's wife, Pamela Baker (a photographer), was visiting the set that day and she's of a similar size and build. So they dressed her up in Johnson's mocap suit and she filled in for unconscious Ellie.

@beccazach Жыл бұрын
@@kdizzle901 definitely not inferior. you’ll naturally prefer whatever version you’ve seen first, or you’ll gravitate to the version that has more elements that you value, like the game showing vastly more infected for gameplay purposes. There’s a reason the show is being praised so heavily bc it makes the characters understandable and likeable. They have to make the show more grounded in its dialogue and action to keep the characters from becoming goofy and unrealistic, and Ellie and Joel are characterized differently to fit the natural length of a tv show. Each episode needs to have a purpose so there’s no way to add more episodes that didn’t have important story beats that were directly from the game. I was a fan of the game yrs ago but I think I prefer the characters in the show even more bc of how much more in depth they made them feel by delving into their trauma and PTSD.

@@beccazach I love both. I think they made a great decision by reducing how many infected we see. It makes them feel very dangerous, because every time we do see them its a close call. I think the show could've gone from amazing to a bit silly if they tried to lean into the "Joel is an unstoppable murderbot" aspect from the game. 2 clickers being barely survivable in episode 2 really felt tense. I think that was the biggest aspect of TWD becoming boring as hell for me. The walkers were a non threat until the writers randomly wanted them to be one.

Sad fact. The actress that played Tess in the game (Annie Wersching) was unable to be involved in the show due to battling cancer. Actually the note that Frank wrote to Bill is an optional choice. You can give it to Bill and see his reaction but if you miss that interaction it won't happen. There are a lot of these little interactions throughout the game which you will miss if you don't pay attention to the side characters. There are also just a lot of notes to be found which will tell stories of the people that lived through the outbreak but again if you don't pick them up or don't want to read them you'll miss them. They are all pretty interesting though and sometimes add to the lore of the world.
@darylferreras6241 Жыл бұрын
The reason why Ellie closed her eyes while playing the arcade game is because all the games where broken. Riley told her to close her eyes and she would narrate what was happening in the game. As the player, you would still have to press the buttons on your controller during the scene, but everything was totally up to the imagination of the characters (they were making do with what they had available).
@TukaihaHithlec Жыл бұрын
David had very similar intentions with Ellie in the game. They finished it and decided it was way too much for the game, so they toned it down and made it more implied. They weren’t concerned with that in the show. The game also did a better job at making you think Joel would save her at any moment, but he shows up only in time to see her butchering his face.
@Bjjbhcoa86 Жыл бұрын
I don't understand how people think it is implied in the game. It was very obvious to me. He definitely does not have to reach for his belt for the viewer/player to know that he had those intentions. This kind of changes and many more character changes really makes this a mid adaptation. A very good series, but ultimately a mid adaptation. I don't want to make this a women/men thing, but after watching that video of Nolan North and Ashley Johnson talking about David and his intentions and how even North had his doubts about them while Johnson was sure of them, makes one think that women at least think of the possibility of getting sexually abused right off the bat much more often. And maybe that makes you right, maybe it was just implied, but the creepiness of David is enough even with the possibility of it which is not something men tend to think about in a situation unless they are clearly shown with a man reaching for their belt.

About Ellie and Riley in the arcade. In the game all the machines are busted which makes sense since the outbreak was 20 years ago. Riley mentions that she once found a working machine that she got to play years ago. That is the one Ellie "plays" in the game. Riley tells her how the controls work and to close her eyes and basically narrates the game to Ellie. You get to play as the player but we only see the button cues and Ellies face. The lighting and sound effects are Ellies imagination. Also this part takes place in the DLC and it jumps back and forth between Ellie and Rileys story and Ellie and Joel after he got injured. They show how she got the supplies to patch Joel up and as you saw at the end how she transportet him afterwards.

"WERE THERE MORE RECORDINGS?" There is another recorder from Marlene in that hospital where she talks to Anna (Ellie's mom) and says that she gave the go-ahead to do the surgery on Ellie, but she didn't really have any choice (meaning the Fireflies would have gone ahead and done it if Marlene had said not to). She also says the Fireflies wanted to kill Joel (before he woke up) but she said no because Joel would understand "the weight of this choice". You can also find Marlene's journal, which you have to read (it's not a vocal recording). It describes how she wasn't as wounded as she thought she was back in Boston, and how she tried to catch up with Joel and Tess but when they showed up at the Capitol building they found the dead Fireflies. Marlene describes arriving at the hospital and being told the Ellie never arrived, so she assumes she died somewhere on the trip. She's very depressed, but then someone says that "a man and a little girl" was spotted entering the tunnel just outside the hospital, which gives her new hope.

From the little bits I've heard about the game, Marlene seems a much more sympathetic character, where she really feels the weight of it and seems to go back and forth. In the TV show, to me, she seems more hard and cold about it, despite telling Joel she's the only one who understands. It's interesting to know that even if Marlene had said no, the Fireflies had control of the situation and would've done it anyway. In the show, it seems Marlene is the only one in control. It also changes the argument about guardianship, if Anna had given permission. It's still f'd up that no one asked Ellie, but it makes a difference when it's her mom versus Marlene or Joel giving the go-ahead/not go-ahead. Even though the outcomes are the same, these kind of details really change the narrative.

For Episode 5, the reason I prefer the game is because Henry and Sam have a "Marlin-Nemo" relationship, where Henry keeps telling Sam "No", and some of his regret in the end could be related to him being too strict. While Sam being deaf could have increased this relationship tension because Sam COULDN'T be on his own, the line "I'm hungry" is pretty much the only time that guardian conflict came up. Here, the "guardian swap" is actually one of the hardest parts of the game because after getting so used to Ellie having a gun and taking guys out herself, all of a sudden you have to fight a bunch of infected and Sam can ONLY distract them because Henry DOESN'T let Sam have a gun.

Diamond Dave at it again with beast mode editing. Thank you! Yay! Glad you guys watched this. A few answers: In the mall scene the video game screen isn't working in the arcade in the game. She uses her imagination. It's definitely a lot sadder. As for David, I get the feeling Oak and Quinn missed the fact that they were implying David's intentions throughout. Most especially how he "mounts" her. As someone who has taken countless Krav Maga and self defense classes, this is the practice move we get into to fight the "r*pist" when he's got us down on the ground bc it is the most commonly used position an r-ist forces his victim into. Oak kinda jumped the gun by talking when Ellie told Joel, "he tried to..." And he pulls her close and says "Oh, baby girl." They only caught that last line and didn't realize it was in response to what she said. That's the part that's most powerful about his line. Joel understood without Ellie having to tell him explicitly what David was about do to her and why she acted so forcefully. It was just subtle enough but almost everyone I know who played the game understood what they were going for with David in the game is exactly what they were going for in the show. Hope that clears that up a bit!

Great video! Just one thing though- I'd say that David trying to SA Ellie is definitely implied in the game too! 'She's David's newest pet' 'You can try begging' 'He tried to-', her changed demeanor afterward, etc. Gameplay mechanics (and not wanting to 'overly disturb' players) is probably why they didn't take it further, but I think we're definitely meant to infer that that's what David was trying to do at the end :/

Some different details about Sarah’s death: - Tommy wasn’t separated from them at first and Joel gave him his own gun, only getting separated because Tommy stayed behind to hold them off. Joel doesn’t ask Tommy for help as she dies. - Joel isn’t panicked as she dies, he’s in denial. He’s telling himself she’ll be okay as much as her. Joel does not handle loss well at all, this being the first clear indication (the first technically being the total lack of photos of his wife in the house), later furthering that by refusing to talk about Tess, or Sam and Henry.

In regards to the Bill and Frank story you can see in the letter where the writers picked up on some characteristics to write a new story line in the show. Bill and "set in his ways" outlook and Frank being more open to explore and do more and that's what we get in the show, Bill being closed off while Frank is more open and receiving. In the game I feel the story is still the same just a different outcome. You can tell from Bill's body language and the change of his voice when he finds Frank that he never stopped loving him and I believe Frank never stopped loving Bill as well. When I read this letter in the game I never saw it as Frank hating Bill. I saw it as him just being as stubborn as Bill and he hated that Bill was right and never wanted to give Bill the satisfaction of that, so he left him that.

Despite the major change in Bill's outcome in the show.... They both serve similar functions, story-wise In the game, bill is a version of Joel who completely closed himself off to love forever. Frank left bill because bill was genuinely too set in his ways and Frank couldn't live like that. Bill was surviving, not living. Bill is a warning to Joel about the dangers of closing oneself off to love: becoming a bitter, paranoid shell of a person In the show, Bill is a reminder to Joel about the wonderful parts of love. Bill was only surviving until frank showed up. Frank taught bill how to live and love. "Paying attention to things, it's how we show love". Bill becomes something to aspire towards. Bill, through his letter, reminds Joel of his purpose: to protect their loved ones. Through the (mostly) same character and a diff ending... Joels in both mediums are affected. One is a warning, the other is a reminder. But ultimately, both push Joel forward, and begin to open Joel up towards Ellie.

I actually think, given the changes the show made, Bill would NOT have functioned at all as he was. Game Joel is softer. He CARED. He is NOT the old curmudgeon that hates the world yet. It is only a possibility for Game Joel. So story wise the narrative choice of someone at a fork in the road is provide a warning of what the main character can become if one path is taken. Bill was that Warning; If Joel kept going he would end up giving up on love and everyone like Bill had. Game Joel cared for Tess, she knew it and said "There is enough here that you must feel some kind of obligation to me". She had him take Ellie for HER and her wishes. She was someone he had found to fight for and felt obligated to even upon death. When she died, Ellie became that something to fight for (Ending: "you keep finding something to fight for" means a continual occurrence and for Game Joel when he lost Sarah that was Tommy, and when Tommy left Joel, that was Tess, and when Tess died, that was Ellie.) SHOW Joel, however, is HARD. He is ALREADY the old curmudgeon who hates the world. He had NOT cared for Tess. She knew it. She said: "I never asked you to feel the way I felt". And had him take Ellie for HIM and HIS redemption for the bad deeds they did. In the ending he says: "If you just keep going, you'll find something new to fight for". This and the whole: "It wasn't time that did it" was to indicate that ELLIE was that something new. That he had NOT found anything or anyone, that he had just been "keeping going" up to that point. That Tommy or Tess wasn't a part of that cycle. There was no narrative need for a warning because Joel was already there, He had already passed that fork in the road. The narrative needed the "Even an old hate the world curmudgeon can find hope and redemption after having fallen all that way", to show that even once you have taken that wrong path, you can still find a way to get on the good path. Kind of like the difference between a story with a sexually active teen (at risk of getting pregnant/getting some one pregnant) and then showing a person who became a parent young and the fall out to narratively show the warning of sexual irresponsibility. If that character now is already close to becoming a parent young, showing a "warning" makes zero sense. The narrative option then becomes showing someone who gave the child up for adoption and both have a future through sacrifice.

Bill and Frank were definitely still lovers in the game, and I have always taken that letter to be lashing out in the worst way, but not indicative of true hatred. Clearly they were going their separate ways, or intended to, because they were fighting. Whether Frank would have come back ever or not won't be known because he was infected in the process of leaving. It's more tragic but the Bill's town segment still serves almost the entire same purpose from a character standpoint

Enjoyed the show but there were some critical details about Joel and Ellie that I wish they didn’t change. - Joel didn’t want to be around Ellie, not because he found her annoying, but because she immediately reminded him of Sarah. When they’re waiting for Tess he tries going to sleep right away because he doesn’t want to spend a waking minute with her - she then proceeds to point out the watch Sarah have him. - Joel was sometimes verbally mean to Ellie to push her away, but he was never physical, never called her names, never told her to stop swearing, etc. He inherently wanted to like her but emotionally wanted nothing to do with her. - Ellie is actually a very kind and respectful person inside. She never tries to be rude or snarky with Joel. Notably, she really wanted to apologize about Tess, and even does later after Joel tells her not to mention her. She actually apologizes quite a bit throughout the game, including to the soldier that scanned her, whom she didn’t think they were going to kill. - Ellie swears because she’s scared and trying to seem tough. She always emphasizes the swears in her sentences because of that. The tougher she actually gets, the less she swears. - Ellie wants a gun because she can and should be allowed to defend herself, not because she “has a violent heart”. Joel doesn’t want to give her one because admitting she needs one would be admitting she’s in real danger, not because he doesn’t trust her with one. Just some details I personally really liked that I don’t get why they changed.
@angharad256 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. They hardened Ellie and made Joel much more brittle in the show, which I didn't like; it undermined her arc when it was time to take charge after he was wounded, because she had already been taking charge and telling the 56 year-old survivor what to do. It also meant less when Joel started opening up to her because we the watchers had already seen him being vulnerable.
@adelseifeddine1758 Жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. They made Ellie the typical annoying brat teenager in the show, always dropping f-bombs and snarky and they muted Joel to an extent of not having emotions nor facial expressions. I loved the game versions of both Ellie and Joel waaaaay better than the Tv show.
@Bjjbhcoa86 Жыл бұрын
They changed all this because they consciously sacrificed Joel's character and characterisation in favour of what is coming next. They shifted the focus of the series, since now we have the second game. 1:54:59 in the videogame on the scene where Ellie is playing the fighting game in the arcade, the reason it was shot like that was because the arcade machine was broken and Riley was voicing the game and pretending and making up scenarios so that Ellie could feel like she was playing it. Really enjoyed this video and so glad you guys enjoyed both the show and the game. Thanks for this. One thing I would say is that the game does also imply that David was going to force himself upon Ellie had she not grabbed the machete in time. There is the reference to her being "David's newest pet" but also, when Joel finds her after she has killed David, she says to him "He tried to-" and she doesn't finish the sentence because she's crying and Joel is comforting her. Obviously, for the show, the writers thought they had maybe been too subtle in the game script so leaned on it more, but it was definitely the intention in the game to convey that same thing. Also, in terms of asking what you missed from the game and what our favourite parts were, the extended sequence where Joel and Ellie get out of the university as Joel is bleeding out is fantastic. I don't know if you watched the full sequence but cut it from the final edit of the video or what but that sequence is a right high-point in the game.

In the game, none of the games work. About Tess' death, in the game, we don't need over dramatic scene cause we are with her for a long time (some hours) and we are playing Joel, not just seeing him, so the feelings are more powerful, wich is not the case for the show so we need more drama to be equaly involved. In fact, this is the case for every big scene, the game doesn't need as drama as the show cause we are more attached to the characters. Hell yeah! you guys did it! Yes, thank you! I've been saying for everyone else that the game handled the ending situation much better than the TV show with those recording tapes. I really love the game waaaay better than the TV version. This version of Joel is kind and loving but at the same time so aggressive when he needs to be. It was a roller coaster of emotions throughout the game. In the game, I kinda felt that Joel made the decision of killing-spree for his progressive and growing love towards Ellie. While in the show, he only softens at the end and he kinda looked like a maniac psychopath murderer. That's NOT what Joel is about. In my opinion, Pedro had only ONE great performance: while talking and crying to Tommy about Ellie. Other than that, throughout the show, he was neutral, muted and showed no emotions or facial expressions. I prefer Troy's version. And they totally ignored his watch's significance in the TV show, while in the game he's checking it, touching it, glancing it from time to time which gives more feels to the story. Also, I recent watched Troy Baker (Joel actor), Ashley Johnson (game Ellie) and Nolan North (David in the game) playing the whole game on KZbin and they talked about behind the scenes stuff, hosted the other mocap-actors while playing the game and asked them about their experiences in the making of this game, their own interpretations of their own characters. Nolan North (David in the game) debated that his David's character was debatable, he could be either a father-like man, wanting Ellie by his side just as much as Joel wanted, or he saw in her a replacer because she's loyal and strong or he could just be a creepy pedophile. It was never explicit in the game which I do love. I really love different interpretations of characters. While in the show, they made him a creepy psychopath and a rapist. Also, Ellie in the game was much sweeter, kinder while also dropping f-bombs every now and then, while in the show they made her the typical annoying brat teenager, always aggressive when speaking to others, always cussing,... which I hated a lot. Many people have told me that the 2 versions of Ellie are the same. They are NOT!!!!! Of course, I prefer the Ashley's version of Ellie.

I also want to say, I appreciate you used the original game and not the remaster. I will say though, it's a shame that this wasn't split up in multiple parts and you get to see the game as it's meant to be. Unless I'm wrong and there is cut content for Patreon, removing the extra cinematics not in the show and small moments of dialog in the game does it a bit of a disservice. I mean, I get it, 10-ish hours is a lot to watch, but what wasn't shown, what collectibles weren't read, the missed tense stealth moments and high impact fights, all that combined makes the game the masterpiece it is. I know this was done to match the show, but I guess it feels like being given a piece of cake with missing layers and no icing. A detail that I haven't seen anyone bring up is that Marlene in the TV show says "It makes normal cordyceps think she's cordyceps". We see that cordyceps was not violent with Tess. However, in the same episode, a clicker bites Ellie the second time. If normal cordyceps think she's cordyceps, why was a clicker violent with Ellie and not with Tess? It leads me to think that perhaps fireflies were too quick to come to a conclusion and should have taken more time to research Ellie's condition before going ahead with something as big as a brain surgery. A hasty decision that would ALSO be putting humanity at risk, just as equally as Joel's decision. Also, in the TV show, just before Joel walks in to the operating room, the head surgeon asks "do we have enough power?" - which makes me think they've had power issues. Imagine a power cutoff during a surgery? How do you refrigerate the samples? as the Oak suggested, too many questions that are unanswered for a good reason.

One of the big differences is that in the game, a lot of the story exposition would come through random things you found lying about. Letters, or posters etc. There's also dialogue between characters during some of the slower "traversal" sections between action set pieces. The TV show, being a different medium, had to change things up due to the changes in pacing. As such it's hard to say which I preferred. I feel that both are top-tier examples of their respective mediums. The Bill and Frank story is a great example of this. The game _has_ to stay focussed on the protagonists of the story, so we don't have space/time for a long flashback, so instead their entire relationship has to be brought out through dialogue with Bill and through collectables in the world. With the series, there was suddenly the option to show their entire lives together and create a beautiful story that wouldn't have worked in the context of the game. As such I think it's a brilliant change and I'm glad that Neil wasn't wedded to the original version.

In the arcade scene in the game the machine wasn't working so Riley made Ellie have her eyes closed and imagine playing the game in her head while Riley was narrating the whole thing in the back. It was a really cool scene where more and more screen effects and sound effects were added the more vivid ellie's imagination got.

Another point regarding the recordings, is that just because the doctor making the recording is confident that it will work, it doesn't mean he's right. It's still ambiguous enough, that it is far from a certainty that a cure will be created.

The VA for Joel, Troy Baker, has a podcast here on KZbin where him and Nolan North (VA for Nathan Drake in Uncharted) plays this game. And Baker basically talks about his experience being involved with the game. And they have other people come on the pod every episode who were also involved with the game, and it just gives kind of a really cool behind the scenes kind of thing for the game.
