Badd Medicine here and its reaction time
On the lush alien world of Pandora live the Na'vi, beings who appear primitive but are highly evolved. Because the planet's environment is poisonous, human/Na'vi hybrids, called Avatars, must link to human minds to allow for free movement on Pandora. Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paralyzed former Marine, becomes mobile again through one such Avatar and falls in love with a Na'vi woman (Zoe Saldana). As a bond with her grows, he is drawn into a battle for the survival of her world.
Avatar (marketed as James Cameron's Avatar) is a 2009 epic science fiction film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Michelle Rodriguez, and Sigourney Weaver. It is the first installment in the Avatar film series. It is set in the mid-22nd century, when humans are colonizing Pandora, a lush habitable moon of a gas giant in the Alpha Centauri star system, in order to mine the valuable mineral unobtanium. The expansion of the mining colony threatens the continued existence of a local tribe of Na'vi, a humanoid species indigenous to Pandora. The title of the film refers to a genetically engineered Na'vi body operated from the brain of a remotely located human that is used to interact with the natives of Pandora

Luckily y'all don't have to wait 13yrs for 3 since Cameron wrote 2, 3, 4, and 5 together while developing tech to film 2 and part of 3! He's already finished filming 3 to come out end of next year with each subsequent sequel every other year after

Noticed you mentioned western expansion and this is an adaptation of the classic "cowboys vs indians" story. To me the Na'vi, Omaticaya clan, resemble the Lakota Sioux indian tribes. You'll see other representations with other clans later in the coming part 2. According to Cameron, these representations were intentional. They even went to the "leaders" for permission to represent their culture.

13:17 I'm glad you guys kind of picked up on this --Jake's torch was almost unnecessary, since the jungle provides enough light at night! By making the fire, he limited his field of vision!
@sillyjellyfish2421
@sillyjellyfish2421 Жыл бұрын
That was the point. He didn't know that. He was told that he is flying to Pandora a WEEK before he got launched up. He didn't have time to learn anything beyond the bare minimum. What he knew as a marine however was that once the light is out, it's OUT, so he made that torch before he was in a complete darkness. If you look closely, you see that during that time it was still dusk. The bioluminiscence isn't strong enough to shine over that. Then he was blinded by the fire he (rightfully by Earth's standards) made to get through the night, so his eyes didn't have time to get used to the dimness of everything around him. During the fight, the last sunlight disappeared and the bioluminiscence kicked in, but he didn't see the glow until AFTER the fire was out and his eyes had about 10 seconds to get used to that. Both his actions and the reveal of the light make a perfect sense. I remember seeing the movie for the first time and just thinking that the blue moss and deep purple plants when Neytiri kills that one vounded dog were just the "blue light filter" for night scenes and i only realized what was going on as Jake did. Which is exactly what JC was going for, so well done!
@dajtoad1
@dajtoad1 Жыл бұрын
@@sillyjellyfish2421 I expect he wouldn't have been briefed about it anyway because his superiors wouldn't know. First, they would see going out at night as too dangerous. Second, of theybxo go out they always ensure they have lights. Nobody had been caught short before out alone in the jungle.

In the original script there was a side romance between Norm and Trudy that would have been awesome to keep in. They had worked side by side for so long that it crossed the boundaries between soldier and scientist and was ultimately a large part of her reasoning for helping their side.

The most common complaint I heard when this movie was still fairly new was that it was "just the Pocahontas story but the natives win." As you guys mentioned, yes, it's a story that's been told before. The difference is how well the story is told and the visuals that are included. No, it's not a new story, but the way it's told is and, to me, and a lot of other people, well worth watching.

funny enough, if i'm not wrong, Disney's Pocahontas and Avatar were written basically at the same time, Cameron just held Avatar off because he wanted to wait for tech to improve to tell the story (there's a reason why even to this day it doesn't look dated) the same goes for Avatar 2, also; though i do think the wait kinda hurt it

Tsahelu is a bond- a deep connection between mind and soul Eywa is real, she is essentially the moon’s consciousness- ‘made up of all living things’ Unobtanium is actually a real scientific term for a theoretical ‘perfect’ element- in reality people would have come up with a different name for it but I think it was kept for the movie so it made more sense Just like how the Ikran had to choose Jake, Toruk also chose him, during the flight chase you could see him aiming for Jake not Neytiri Tsu Tey was originally supposed to mate with Neytiri’s older sister Sylwanin, but the extended edition explains why she wasn’t there Tsu Tey’s death was more harrowing in the extended edition- it made me cry lol If I’m correct, before the humans arrived on Pandora and the Na’vi started learning English, the Na’vi didn’t have a word for ‘lie’ After this movie came out, people began to suffer from what was eventually labelled Post Avatar Depression Syndrome- people connected to this movie deeply and seeing how the Na’vi live compared to their real lives really effected them, reality simply couldn’t live up to the beauty of Pandora

I saw this movie in 3D and it ruined other 3D movies for me because nothing else was this good. I loved seeing Oak smile at the other 2 going crazy, just like Answer in the other Avatar world

I love that the general feeling on this movie has changed. I've always loved it, and yes, it has some strong inspiration from other stories, but it's just a testament to world building and the sequel somehow blows it away
@annalawrence824
@annalawrence824 Жыл бұрын
Agreed! The thing is though....I never understood the hate of "inspiration from other stories"? A lot of people kept saying that, but viewing other tribes, races, as lesser than and a means to an end (or even in your way) is a universal human experience. One that we've sadly done time and time again throughout history. It's not just a Pocahontas inspired idea 😅
@darylesells19
@darylesells19 Жыл бұрын
@@annalawrence824 It's a take I like to counter with asking just how many 'Romeo and Juliet' inspired movies there are. There's no way to know. It's obvious what story beats are going to be touched on there too, but the execution is all that matters at the end of the day. As long as there are enough factors and themes separating one from the other then why not enjoy a film that has a simple story?

To see Oak just sitting in silence clearly loving this movie. This is one of those few movies that legitimately has something for everyone the world building is insane. Maybe I'm a sucker for someone that can create a believable world in general but this insane talent .

Was waiting for this reaction for so long!!I have watched this movie uncountable no of times. It was my first 3d movie, saw it when I was 11 or something. After that I got a dvd on rent, never returned it, watched it until the dvd got scratched. No matter how many times I watch it, I still pick up so many small new details. One of the best movies ever made.

Man I really wish they watched the full cut. It has much more character development. More story with grace and the school, see the rivalry between Jake and Tsu tay turn into more of a brothership by Jake earning his respect by being the only other person who can successfully hunt in the air and a beautiful last moment with each other before tsu tay dies. And a bunch of other stuff. Essentially everyone who dies gets more character development so their deaths are way more impactful. Its awhole nother 15 minutes of great Avatar stuff Edit: forgot to mention his relationship with Tsu Tay in the full cut also makes Netiri choosing Jake over Tsu Tay more impactful.

I saw this in theatres back in 2009. It was so intense and absolutely beautiful! I didn't know two of you didn't see it yet. Oak sitting there being the only one who has lol. I love this movie, yes some memes came about since,. but back then it was the pinnacle of awesome CGI. It sets the bar high for good quality. So happy to watch your reactions!

About the brutality of the moment - there are 2 specific scenes that make me tear up like a baby each time and both times it is because of the sound. In this movie it was the first time i have seen anyone using the sound before the scene cut to keep the story connected. Like that time when the cremating fire is actually the shuttle engine, or when Jake looks at arrows in that truck's tires and we already hear "you're not in Kansas anymore" and dozens of others. And yet, there is exactly ONE scene where the sound just cuts off suddenly and entirely - when the Hometree is falling and we see various groups running away at once, there is a moment when a part of the trunk is falling on a group of women and children, and the moment when the camera (POV of someone standing there) would be hit by the tree, both the scene and the sound just cuts. Like dozens of na'vi, we the audience just get squished with them amd we are gone. I cry every time. The 2nd tear hell is shortly after, when Neytiri tells Jake to never come back. I swear that i have never seen another character in any movie ever before or after (with the exception of The way of water of course) cry like Neytiri did here. Holywood is so affraid of the image of ugly, angry, snot and tears and blood covered female characters looking broken and absolutely unsexy as they break emotionally, because they think that it scares the male audience away. And yet here we have Zoey, ugly, grieving, angry, dirty, wailing with raspy skipping and broken voice craddling the mutilated body of her father... And i cry again.

I was 11 years old when the first Avatar came out, was blown away back then, I waited 13 years for the sequel and was super hyped when the first trailer came out, I'm 25 now and watched The Way of Water 11 times in theaters! It's such an incredible experience watching it on the big screen in IMAX 3D. The visuals are on another level and you feel like you're on Pandora, that everything is real! I had to remind myself a couple times that almost everything is CGI. Good thing is that I can watch in 3D with my projector, as soon as the 3D Blu-Ray releases I'm gonna watch it again. But nothing comes close to the IMAX experience! Can't wait for the third one and your reaction to The Way of Water!

I remember seeing this once a week every week while it was in theaters in 3D because once it was out of theaters you'd never get to see it like that again. The 3D was done so well that you barely even noticed it, it was just so natural. No weird focus issues other movies would have. Just beautiful. Smooth. It added so much to the movie.

I truly hope you guys got to see Avatar 2 in the movies because it was the most magical movie experience I have ever had. Felt unreal and like nothing else. I think a big part of all Avatar movies is simply the enjoyment of discovering a new world like Oak said, and the technology makes it possible. It really sucks you in and takes you to a different world, and I believe I read Cameron say that is one of his main goals with these movies: to make people feel like they really are there. Beautiful.

Saw it three times in theaters. Remember my mom saying that when they left, everything seemed a little duller. Saw the sequel three times in theaters, as well. The sequel is, if possible, even better. It's everything about the first movie but on a much bigger scale. Also, Avatar 3 is scheduled for December 2024 and scenes for it have already been shot.

Took my mom to IMAX 3D for the sequel. She is 74 and has never seen a 3D movie or been to IMAX. First IMAX movie was Top Gun: Maverick, and first 3D movie was also in IMAX and was the sequel to Avatar. She loved both, and was entirely immersed. She did say that some of the 3D does get overwhelming, but she loved both movies. The Avatar movies are really what 3D immersion should feel like (imo) anyway.

This was re-released in 3-D IMAX a week or two before the sequel came out to refresh everyone’s minds. It was taken out of circulation and I don’t believe there is any other plans to re-re-release it. I hope they do put it in theaters again. My favoring actor was C.C.H. Pounder. She is amazing in every role she plays.
