He forced them into the battle not the war. Marley Declared War on Paradis Island in the episode Declaration of War. Eren and crew just got the first attack in on that war. From their Perspective it seems like Eren is starting stuff but he is just reacting to Marley's action. It's strongly hinted at but not clearly spelled out until later but Eren can see the future so he knew they were going to declare war which is why he waited at that spot for them to go through the motions.

They blame this on Eren because yeah, he planned this by himself and forced their hands by going behind enemy lines. Our people of Paradis are forced to retrieve them, because The Coordinate/Founding Titan could very well fall into Marleyan hands if they didn't. Scouts probably didn't want to do this battle at all. Eren forced them without any discussion whatsoever. And now a lot of Scouts died for it. Gabi and Falco are very interesting characters for this story though. They only got introduced for this final run but I feel like they're almost as important as the older characters. Gabi is definitely a reflection of young Eren. But this time, there's Falco beside him who, in contrast, is a very empathetic boy. Gabi's character arc is some of the most interesting in this season.

Falco telling Gabi that it was about revenge is misunderstanding a lot of people make regarding the battle. Eren was motivated by revenge for much of the series but that changed after the basement. The beach scene at the end of season 3 Eren is sad as he talks about enemies beyond the ocean as he knows there is nothing but war awaiting them. Also in previous episode when talking to Reiner, Eren says, "I vaguely recall saying something like that." when Reiner ask about this being his revenge as it is no longer personal and only about achieving victory. As for everyone being pissed at Eren it's because he went AWOL without telling anyone and only sent one way letters back to them telling them his plan with hopes they would show up having his back.

Eren used to get really tired and out of combat with 2 transformations, so here with 3 transformations he was beyond tired to continue fighting, that's why he spared Reiner, since he too was too tired to fight, you can even see that he can't make his titan form complete when he transform, lacking parts of his armor.

There’s such little things like a random character who in season 2 or three (can’t remember exactly) said, “why did I do that” while looking confused at his own actions. I wanted to weigh in on some points that were made. The reason why the scouts are upset is because Eren went rogue and acted on his own accord, forcing the Eldians into battle. They could've ignored Eren's letters ya. But that doesn't change the fact that what Eren planned involved the entirety of Eldians as he was in Marley to declare war. And since Eren has the power to do that, the scouts are forced to support him because of the path he chose. Basically what he sent to them was, "I'm going to declare war in the name of Eldia, up to you if guys if you want to help me or not." But overall, I love this show so much.

If his intension was to declare war he would have stroke before Willy explained how the war got to an end and made the world join forces after willy's speech. Willy's declaration of war is through words. Eren's declaration of war is through actions. Sadly, international law states that the only time a state is allowed to retaliate (if that's what eren did from your perspective) is when they've been attacked. :( In this case, Eren is the first one to attack. Actions matter more than words, because words sometimes don't have weight. Though Willy's words were legitimate, Eren's response was heavier. If you search rules of retaliation in war, it shows that retaliation should be equal to the attack and must only be directed at military not civilians. Eren's actions did not meet that standards. But who cares about humantarian law right?

Some of my favorite details in this show is understanding how the world building is done. There's a reason why the gang (especially Hange) were freaked out about Onion-capone skin colour. They were so closed from the world that they were left in the dark ages. There was also the part where the gang returns to Shiganshina and Armin doesn't know what coffee is (he thought it was some sort of black tea). Even the presence of the Beast Titan, they call it that because they have no idea what a monkey is. Such a great show!

Quinn, the Scouts blame Eren for Sasha’s death because it was a needless risk they HAD to take, forced upon them by Eren. They couldn’t risk losing Eren because he is their only playing card against the world that wants them eradicated. Eren has been reminded of this time and time again, and used it to his advantage, for personal profit. He stole the Warhammer titan, and ensured a guaranteed war by attacking Willy Tybur.

I think this is where the controversial opinions on Attack on Titan start. I remember watching these few episodes (4x5 - 4x8) and being absolutely horrified at the sight of our main guys slaughtering the Marleyans. Obviously it's not like Marley as a whole is innocent. However the show has stated time and time again just how horrific war is and how no one wants to kill other humans (or at least shouldn't want to). And now? We're watching the scouts massacre civilians and soldiers without a second thought. Floch is even celebrating "The new eldian empire". I've always been confused by people hating on Gabi for Sascha's death or cheering for the jaw titan to be eaten. At that particular point, I couldn't help but agree with Levi and resent Eren for forcing this attack. What I'm trying to say is, it's really fascinating to see how all of us with our own experiences and ifluences we've grown up with and encountered throughout life react so vastly different to the story coming full circle. Looking forward to the next episodes, because it doesn't really slow down from here!

I totally understand hating on Gabi, because she's got people around her telling her and evidence showing her that the war was instigated by her own side. She's brainwashed I guess? But why is the rival who grew up with her not brainwashed? It doesn't track. She's just flawed as an individual. But yes, this is where we see our morality questioned. It's war. Is it ever justified? Or is it even justified in this case given the fact that it's being waged in response to Marley's clear intention to continue to wage war on the so-called island devils just moments prior to Eren's planned attack? Maybe, maybe not. But it's clear that war was going to happen regardless, and of course the Eldians would want to wage that war on foreign land rather than see their homes destroyed again. Is it justified? Given what we (and almost definitely Eren who had spent time getting the lay of the political landscape not to mention the ability to see things not yet seen using the advantage/curse of the founding titan powers) knew about Marley's intentions, I would argue yes though others may disagree. But yes, it becomes morally questionable to wage a pre-emptively defensive war on foreign soil in comparison to fighting an overtly defensive war on your own soil. But note the lack of titans being sent through their walls, killing uncounted innocent people. Armin could have easily walked through the city and killed many more people - if killing the "Marleyan devils" was the intent. It's not the intent though. They took out strategic targets only, with collateral damage (lives which very well would have been lost in the upcoming war regardless).

Just so you know, Eren already transformed so many times before Reiner pops. He might not look like it, but he was definitely out of gas too. Some audience even noticed how he rushed every fight whenever he transformed since it's very uncommon for them to transform multiple times in one battle and Eren already had 3 transformations. He cannot eat them in human form and the Marley troops may regroup anytime. Notice how Levi looks at his watch, they can only stay for a quick raid and need to retreat to the airship immediately - Hange even mentioned "any stragglers will be out of their luck".

Another important thing here is Reiner's attitude. He's consumed by guilt, he knows what they did at the island was wrong but it was "what he had to do", which is why this whole season he's been so conflicted to the point in this one he just wants to sit down and die and hates the fact that he just can't die because he has to keep protecting the kids he cares about. Eren doesn't kill him because he's spent. He did too much. He's out of power, and staying is only risking capture.

QUINN, Eren had already expended a lot of strength by repeatedly transforming, and taking lots of damage. Remember, it requires effort to heal all that damage, and Eren could only previously transform once or twice. It could also be as Diamond Dave mentioned, Eren being "sympathetic" or "merciful" to Reiner. It is at least clear here that Eren doesn't have much care for Reiner at this point. He has different interests than just revenge

I think the reason why eren didn’t eat the jaw was because he was literally out of strength. Becoming a Titan takes a toll on the shifters. Especially turning multiple times in a day and while fighting and taking damage multiple times. All that takes a toll. That last punch to the armor Titan was like the last 15% of his power. He used up bacially all of his strength of his titans ability’s . And he probably realized Reiner even though he wasn’t at full strength ether, he probably had way more than eren at that point. Plus the scouts weren’t here for a war. They arnt prepared for a long drivin battle. Just a sneak attack. And leave. So if they kept fighting they would’ve eventually been all killed. Leaving was the best option. Eren got what he wanted. He got the warhammer Titan. And they destroyed their port full of ships. Wrecked havoc and caused chaos. The war isn’t over. It just began. Now they have to retreat and regroup. Both sides took damage.

They couldn't not get Eren back because he has the Founding Titan, which is the most important thing of all. Eren twisted their arm and put everyone at risk on purpose, resulting in Sasha's death. That's why they're angry at him.

Had they ignored the letters Marley would have taken back the Founder and Attack titan. Marley having the Founder basically means it'd be completely over for Paradis. The scouts (or at least our main group as we see) express not having been board with the plan, so it was either go foarth with a plan they detest or let their greatest weapon kill himself in battle and have their island destroyed.

That death really hurt. The first episode of AoT that I saw was the Sasha-focused episode in season 2, I think because it came on after Dragon Ball on Toonami in 2017. I hate to say it but she was so easy to love as a character that I think she was a good choice to have killed so tragically for this war to continue. Amazing writing and storytelling!

Answering the questions about why Eren didn't eat the jaw titan without spoilers. The reason was that at the moment when Eren was going to eat the Jaw Titan, the Armored Titan took the Jaw Titan out of Eren's hands so he would have to fight with him to take it off and Eren no longer had enough energy for that, so having fulfilled his main objective of destroying the port to buy time, he decided not to risk more than necessary and retired.

Reiner managed to take Jaw Titan away from Eren, thus Eren would have had to fight him to get him back. The airship was also already overhead, so he and Mikasa (who wouldn't leave him behind) had a small time window to escape via ODM gear. Ultimately, escaping alive with what they had (the warhammer) took priority. Also, Eren just did 3 titan transformations in what was probably about 10 minutes of fighting. Two is generally the limit for most titan shifters before they start wearing out and their forms start weakening (remember those experiments Hange made Eren do where his titan kept getting smaller, frailer, and at one point most of his human body was exposed at the nape?), which is why (I think) Jaw or Cart Titan expressed frustration when he did a third complete transformation. So Eren was exhausted, as he said. Getting into a close quarters wrestling fight with Armored Titan (as flimsy as Reiner's armor was looking right then) would be risky later when he and Mikasa would absolutely need to escape. It would also be dangerous for Mikasa, who isn't inside a titan and more vulnerable as the rest of the Paradis forces were already retreating into the airship. Thus leaving the Marley forces to regroup and possibly take fire at Mikasa and Eren. With Eren and Reiner already out of reach of one another and nearby Marley soldiers still in disarray, it was the safest to just leave now than risk having to escape in the middle of a scuffle. And, who knows, maybe there are other reasons he let Reiner go.

Reminder: Grisha Jaeger and Dina Fritz (Smiling Titan) birthed Zeke. Remember the 1st half of season 3 was all about the royals and getting Historia/Christa on the throne. Zeke has royal blood, whenever royalty has the Founding Titan, King Fritz' will - the king who established the walls on the island - erases the memories of those citizens there, this is why Grisha..as the Attack Titan killed that family and consumed the Founding Titan. Another note, because the Smiling Titan was Dina, remember some sort of titan lightning happened when Eren punched Dina's hand and those titans attacked Dina. That same lightning happened when Eren kissed Christa's hand when she accepted the throne.

I think the main issue is that the only reason this mission happened was because Eren forced their hand. None of them planned on this. Eren went rogue and did his own thing, and they have no choice but to come after him. So every single death during this operation is Eren's fault, and he knows it. This also resulted in the death not just of their oppressors (Marleyans), but also innocent civilians, including Eldians. You will find out how Zeke came to be on their side, but for now just know that Eren went out on his own. This was an emergency plan to recover him. You can actually see an Armin's face when he picks up Eren and when he stops Mikasa. He doesn't agree with what Eren has done.
