My Father was a Sergeant with the 101st at Bastogne. My Uncle, his brother was a corporal with Patton's 3rd Army. They met in Bastogne and hugged for the first time in 3 years. For the rest of their lives, every time they got together, My Uncle would talk about how Patton saved the 101st and my Father would argue that the 101st didn't need saving.

I had something similar happen on my boat in the navy. I forget what the situation was about, but our Doc was a 1st class, and a Chief tried to pull rank on him. Doc told the Chief that at that moment, he wasn't a Petty Officer 1st Class, he was the ships Doctor and the head of the medical department. All other department heads are officers which means when it comes to him doing his job, he is basically above all enlisted and most officers.

The soldier being played by Jimmy Fallon at the end of this episode, 2nd Lieutenant George C. Rice, is a true-blue hero. I'm talking a balls-of-steel hero. When word got around that the 506th was moving into positionwithout rnough armor and equipment, Rice and two enlisted volunteers loaded up a trailer with as much stuff as they could grab and drove it out to where the 506th was gathering. The three of them made five trips from a supply depot to the step-off point. Rice ordered the other two men to stay behind as he made his sixth, seventh, eigthth, and ninth trips to bring ammo to the infanty alone. His last two trips were made *AFTER* the German army had encircled the American position, meaning he could have been killed or captured easily. He was loading up for a tenth trip when he was specifically ordered by his commanding officer to stand down. Rice was nominated for the Medal of Honor for his efforts, but it was downgraded to the Distinguished Service Cross.

My favourite shot of the whole series is the final one where Winters is first watching the men begin their march into Bastogne, and then joining them. If you pay attention, he blends in with them as they head towards the forest. Leadership while actively engaging in what is being asked of others. It sums up Winters' leadership style so well.
@malacaimarbas2048Ай бұрын
It’s interesting that this episode is about leadership, and the only time Winters sends someone else in his place, it was directing Dukeman to move the machine gun squad, and he was shot and killed, the only death at the crossroads. When you think about it like that, it makes far more sense why Winters feels like the single death is so important and tragic.

One of my only issues with this series is that the 101st did have artillery at Bastogne. McAuliffe, acting as the CO, was the Assistant Division Commander, Artillery and he organized the artillery they did have into a mobile force that was able to respond in any direction. So when the Germans attacked, the artillery was able to reposition and respond. It was one of the things that did help in the defense of Bastogne.
@krisfrederick5001Ай бұрын
This is when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. The back and forth between the typewriter and the gunfire is done brilliantly as he's reliving the scene. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton addressed it with the back of his hand on a soldiers face famously. Oh and if any of you run into any bacon sandwiches, let me know. Currahee ♠

The battle of the Crossroads was actually more unbelievable in real life. The smoke grenade was faulty so the guys were lagging behind a considerable distance. Winters made it up the verge and innitially threw a Grenade at the Scout, although he forgot he left tape on the trigger so it didn't go off. The Scout threw a Potato Masher back but for whatever reason it didn't go off either. Winters then emptied a total of 3 clips into the German Company, alone, exposed on a verge until the rest of his Platoon caught up. They had the Germans on the run after an Artillery exchange and Easy chased them a mile or so to a Ferry Crossing, using textbook fire & manouver tactics, utilizing their Machinegun Squads for cover. They made it to the Ferry Crossing and another German Company openned up with overwhelming Machinegun fire from the opposite bank and Easy had to fall back. The incident with Liebgot and the Prisoners was real, iirc one of them later thanked Winters. This episode we're also introduced to Doc Roe, we'll get to know him soon, he's one of the Company Medics and one of the only people who can get away with shouting at those above him. And ofcourse, this episode was Directed by Tom Hanks so, of course the Typewriter took centre stage 😊. Looking forward to Ep 6!

My Uncle, Sgt Louis B "Shorty" Flores was a member of the 506th and moved between Easy and HQ companies. He never said a lot to me, but he said the cold at Bastogne was almost worse than the Germans. There was a lot of back and forth at times and he commented about, when it was obvious his group was being overrun, pulling dead guys over him - once a dead guys frozen leg actually broke off when he tried to do this - then they would just wait there for the Germans to get pushed back. He was 19 years old.

Other than the obvious PTSD overlay to the portrayal of Winters, Nixon, Compton (& every man really) what sticks out in this episode is the emergence of Eugene (Doc) Roe. He has appeared in nearly every episode but this is the first time you hear dialogue. Just like Winters, he knows "his guys"; he sees how Capt Winters is taking the news from Col Sink on his new position at Battalion & offers him a cup of coffee...next we see Doc chew out the three officers after Moose is shot. Eugene Roe....Desmond Doss, two amazing medics.

@27:10 With the fear thing, you know that the enemy is there, you have to take account that they may see you, with him running the field, there was an unknown amount of troops on the other side of the road, some things need to be done, and like Spears told Blithe, you just have to work through your fear. Some seemed to go into "standby mode", some revert back to their old selves between combat, some stay high strung, which as you seen can get your own men shot. ☕🐝🇺🇸

Please be sure to react to the accompanying HBO documentary, “We Stand Alone Together,” for far more context from the vets including from Alley who you saw Doc treat at the start of this episode just after the quiet moment with Trigger the dog. Alley talks in the documentary about the grenade that hit him and why he survived. Lots more from all the surviving vets plus archival footage. It is the perfect capstone / Episode 11 of the series. Hanks directed this episode and his love of old typewriters shines through (he’s a collector). Doc Roe - a fairly junior enlisted mane - dressing down his most recent CO Lt Welsh and them taking it shows ina single scene how much the men including officers respected Roe and the medics and also how much Roe cared (you’ll get to know him more in the next episode).

In reality, two .30 cal machine guns opened fire toward the German’s position as Winters and his men charged across the open field. It wasn’t a sneaky assault like in show. This is why the Germans (and the lone one Winters shot) were taking cover down in the dirt. The assault totally took them by surprise. The other Germans that came over the ridge after the shooting started were confused and probably thought they were being attacked by a much larger American force in the flank. They saw all the other retreating Germans and followed. Also, the red smoke malfunction thing never happened. They all charged at the same time. Winters was just in excellent shape and outran everyone else.

Going in to Bastogne, the series focuses on Easy company for obvious reasons. Some reactors who are unfamiliar with the history can get left with the impression that Easy was the only ones holding the line. In actuality, the allied units in Bastogne numbered over 22,000 - with the Germans having more than twice that number. The end tag also says they had no artillery or air support, which is untrue due to several artillery battalions being present. This is by no means meant to suggest that Easy company had an easy time. No one defending Bastogne did! The fact that more than twice as many Germans were unable to break or take Bastogne shows that the allies gave the Germans back as hard of a time as they got! As to this episode: as a Marine from a few decades ago, I very much appreciate the depiction of the administrative bullshit leaders have to accomplish after any action or operation. That's always very refreshing to see in a war movie or series. The Oak hit the nail right on the head also when he was talking about the ages of the guys. The newest guys were almost always the youngest at 18, 19, 20, etc. But us "older guys" leading them were still only in our early to mid 20's. I love watching your guys reactions to this! 20:27 .... that's not diesel...you'll need a blow torch to ignite diesel, a match would just go out like you threw it in water....it was gasoline.....

Just a bit of history, there were Poles in the SS, but there were people from occupied and unoccupied Europe too that enlisted in not just the SS but the German Army. In the movie Schindler's List, the guards at the concentration camp were more than likely Ukrainians or those from Eastern Europe, they didn't like the Jews, but they hated the USSR even more.

A lot of the foreign volunteers in the Wehrmacht and SS were recruited (read "forced into service") from POW camps. Most were anti-communist.
