Ironically, the novel isn't really a parody/satire, although it also doesn't have the direct allusions to the Reich. That was a deliberate Verhoeven choice. Heinlein had.....opinions. Not surprising, given the religion he founded.

Saw this opening day. And, yeah, it's not just another action movie... it's got some satirical teeth to it. Which was impressive considering the book it's based on... where the whole Citizen and colonialism aspect is totally serious (the author legit believed it). Your insight into _Full Metal Jacket_ and this was excellent! Never thought about it that way, but you got something there. Very cool. (And why I love your channel).

Please react to a movie called How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies. It's a Thai movie, it centered around a young male who, after received news that his grandma got diagnosed with cancer, decided to take care of his grandma while he himself trying to secure his inheritance from his grandma. This movie is a seriously tear-jerker movie, full of family-themed lessons and, I can dare to say, this movie is a lot better than any family movies that you've ever seen or reacted before.

It's a holdover from the world of the book. The civilization in the books has no real discrimination. Civilians have all the rights of a citizen except for the right to vote and every civilian has a right to seek military service to earn that right to vote. The military does not turn people away based on race, religion, class, region of origin or even physical ability, the military will find something for them to do, and not every job in the military means combat.

I know you got the commentary but the back story is explained more in the video games etc. If you didn't catch the hint the starship troopers started the war. The space federation forcefully colonized the bug planets for land, resorts, new planets for the humans to live. They destroyed the bug homes and killed lots of them. The bugs were actually chill at first then got angry and retaliated. The propaganda and lies of the space federation just painted the bugs as savages who just attacked for no reason and just killing innocent people. The federation made anger and hatred towards the bugs ie the propaganda for everyone including kids killing the bugs when all they had to do was leave them alone. Of course the federation soldiers are dressed in Nazi like uniforms and are fascist for symbolism. Love the reaction. Glad y'all liked the movie
@daniellanctot65484 сағат бұрын
*Thanks for that confirmation: I always thought that story about the mormon colonizers was more antagonistic towards the bugs than the Federal Propaganda clip led on; but having never played the games (Or watched the sequels), I never had proof of it... He's one of those actors who fell in love with the franchise they starred in. Go watch the video, he will tell you all the cool things about STT. He even explains the differences between a civillian and a citizen 😂 He also got some behind the scenes fun facts and heartwarming stories surrounding the fans. This isn't the first film adaptation of STT, btw. There was an miniseries anime adaptation back in 1988 that are more true to the source book. The Verhoeven version spawned a couple of sequels that aren't so good but it also gave us a handful of 3D animated movies that are good! (also the game, Helldivers). Not just that, there was a 3D animated series back in 1999 called 'Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles' which somewhat a hybrid between the book and the movie. And the TV series had better ending for Johnny and Dizz 👍

Starship Troopers is about self sacrifice, moral development, discipline, finding something larger than yourself, etc The screenplay is relatively well adapted, you can see it in the bones of the movie, but Paul Verhoeven painted everything Nazi. As a kid the it just felt like a badass guns and monsters movie with something silly about it. Now I'm an adult and the joy is seeing the collision of opposing themes.

Here is some food for thought that I haven't really seen anyone address. The first thing that occurred to me is at the start of the movie we are specifically shown an orbital defense platform destroy an incoming meteor with ease. It seems calculated that someone might've made sure the defense platform didn't destroy the meteor that hit Buenos Aires on purpose, to drive radicalisation and give excuse to go to war. Now some people might say, oh well the ship lost its communications array but deep space radar is a thing even now, how much more advanced with this level of technology? Also they know that bug meteors are coming in, they'd have other scout ships out there relaying information back. Second thing, from the lore in this movie, we have no indication the bugs have any space travel and are unaware for the most part, except for the ships they can shoot down that they perceive as a threat. How they determine the ships are up there we have no idea. What's also interesting is that for the bugs to shoot meteors out of the field surrounding the planet, they have to understand the degree of calculation in orbital mechanics to be able to hit the meteors in the exact right spot to launch them across space. That means that something has to strike the meteors with enough force to knock them out of orbit but not so much force they destroy them. Then something has to be smart enough to do the calculations to send these rocks across what, light years of space? To hit a blip that is years distant and moves constantly. What I'm saying is that it doesn't make any sense that a race that hasn't discovered space travel could be so utterly precise. Insofar as we are aware, the bugs are native to their planets and don't have any way to leave them, meaning humans were the invaders, maybe we'd even call them colonisers. Final thing, we are told in the beginning what kind of people we are dealing with when they are talking about Hiroshima and Nagasaki as the bombs were dropped simply to find out the effects on a civilian population and they knew they wouldn't get another opportunity. Japan wasn't just on the verge on surrender, they were also on the verge of collapse because of the logistical losses they experienced across the whole theatre of the war. Always interesting to see you guys do the after movie breakdown. There really is so much to this movie and I don't want to write a thesis (who the fuck has the time to read all these damned words?!)

In my opinion, the movie is a brilliant satire that was ahead of its time. What many initially saw as a simple sci-fi action flick is actually a biting critique of military propaganda and authoritarianism. The way I see it, Verhoeven cleverly uses exaggerated patriotism and propaganda to reveal the dangers of blind nationalism, while also drawing sharp parallels to colonialism-humanity’s relentless push into alien territory reflects the exploitative mindset of colonizers. Over the years, the film has finally gained the critical recognition it deserves as a thought-provoking, subversive piece of cinema that challenges viewers to rethink the allure of war and heroism.

The movie is great, but that soundtrack is pure audio bliss. I still blast that at high volume 14 years later.
Love the reaction. The movie? Here's the thing, Verhoeven admitted to not finishing reading the book. Moreover, the movie production started out as "Bug Hunt at Outpost 7"--completely unrelated to the book. After they got the treatment in the works, someone saw some similarities to the book "Starship Troopers." So they went to license the property, a very Hollywood move. I see this movie more as the "Outpost 7" project with "Starship Troopers" window dressing. So much context that Verhoeven ignored, probably because he really was not adapting the book. *ALSO* -- this movie borrows heavily in aesthetics (the weapons, the armor), even a few bits of dialogue from James Cameron's "Aliens," which is wholly ironic since James Cameron had the cast who played the Colonial Marines read "Starship Troopers."

Starship Troopers was an iconic film that spawned a host of sequels (the 2nd one is pretty good), and inspired dozens of games and other films. Helldivers is one of those it inspired. Another good choice to watch is Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, an animated series LOOSELY based on the movies but closer to the book. I would highly recommend it, even if you don't actually do a reaction video. It was an ambitious experiment in storytelling, 40 episodes broken into 8 story arcs of 5 episodes each for M-F syndication. Unfortunately due to production issues when the airdate arrived less than a dozen episodes were finished and new episodes were being added at a rate of 1 per week, so 4 episodes from the final two arcs were cut and replaced with the dreaded clip shows: episodes stitched together with footage from already completed shows. This is the primary drawback of an otherwise excellent series, aside from a subpar soundtrack that failed to come even close to the epic level of the original.

I always snort at the asteroid scene when the captain compliments Zander and Carmen for preventing a full head-on crash by their quick reaction and due to their skill. Carmen looked so smug and pleased with herself - when it was her who brought them into the path of the asteroid in the first place by changing their course of her own volition, after only being on the ship for three weeks and without even telling anyone about it.
@stuka8038 минут бұрын
True, however how could she have predicted that streamlining the route and being efficient would lead them to a completely unforseeable event, that asteroid could have just as easily been in their original path before the changes.

Here,Verhoeven showed how young people have to die in war just to uphold a certain form of Idealism.At first,I wondered why don't they send robots to finish the job.Then,I remembered the D-Day landings during WW2. The Allied soldiers suffered because many of their tanks sank before action.And the naval bombardment did not weaken the German defence. Perhaps Verhoeven wanted to point out how soldiers were thrown into battlefield simply as dispensable pawns. And Ari,isn't it heart breaking to see Dina Meyer's character die...

I love that you guys understood the satire. I grew up with this movie, and people just saw it as a "good guys vs. bad guys" story, missing out on the fascist undertones that Paul Verhoven was trying to point to. I went to my 3rd grade daughter's Veterans Day assembly today right after watching this, and I couldn't not see the parallels between real life and this movie. Keep doing what you're doing.

When I was young and first saw this movie, I took it at face value. Exterminate the bugs, humans are always awesome, yeah! But, as I got older, I looked deeper into this movie. I looked at the propaganda and realized that I fell for it, that I didn't think about the "failure" of the planetary defense system or that the bugs were just defending themselves.

So yes, some bugs were practical (for interaction purposes with actors) including 2 with hydraulics, roughly 6-8 foot tall and 14 foot long. There were another 10 or so without hydraulics that could be posed. As I'm sure someone else has said by now, this movie broke the record for special effects shots (at the time) with the previous cap being 200, this hitting over 500. Not bad for a relatively meagre (by today's standards) $100m budget
