I think people complaining about the choice not to elaborate on the politics behind the civil war are kind of missing the point. War on the ground is not political. It's people killing people trying to kill them (and often killing anyone they happen to run across, combatant or not). No ideology can rationalize slaughter. This isn't a film about why a war breaks out. It's about life and death in a war zone, but instead of a third-world country we can feel superior to, it's the formerly United States of America.
@pershing33463 ай бұрын

I think it's good the movie doesn't focus on it much either. You're right, it's about the human toll of war. Plus in this political climate if they'd gone that route it would've caused a firestorm. Even the insinuation that one side was better or "more correct" than the other would be taking a stance. The movie is saying everyone suffers in the end when humans fight over ideologies.
@seleneluna70213 ай бұрын
I think of the group of journalists as a "character". They all represent not just different life phases in the same profession, but also the way people deal with trauma differently. If you look at "photojournalist" as a character in the movie, then all of the individuals together add immense character depth.
@miieimmortal3 ай бұрын
One of Civil War's dominant themes is desensitization, our species become self destruction when we move away from humanity/empathy. Lee's arc is moving away from her hardened past and becoming more in touch with her feelings while Jessie is becoming desensitized in order to detach herself from her subjects. So in the end it made sense that she left Lee's side in search of "the shot".
@couldbutwont3 ай бұрын
The point of not focusing on the politics and who is right or wrong is outlined perfectly in the scene with the guys against the person in the house. There is no right or wrong. People just trying to survive. I loved that choice. If we are all Americans who is the enemy?

No, the point of not focusing on the politics is to say obey the rules of the game regardless of the politics. It's saying, you lost the election so get out of the white house period. To me, this movie was twice as good in cinema as it was at home. The sound design was about among the best I've ever experienced; when they went into Washington, it felt like you were right in the middle of it. Came out of seeing it thinking it was the best thing I've seen so far this year; It didn't hit the same at home for me (albeit still good). Ending was a bit of an anticlimax imo, not as impact heavy as other moments in the movie were.

I believe that they only mention it once, but the embattled president is in his 3rd term. The implication being that he refused to give up the presidency and managed to get away with it. Seems very relevant to our current situation. Although, Texas and California on the same side is a hell of a stretch of the imagination.
@TheMess98983 ай бұрын
Not really if you think in terms of money. Texas and California would be the among the top countries in the world based on their GDP. So something threatening that could place them as allies. Plus its a plot device to keep the audience in a political grey area.

Not such a stretch… take out the gerrymandering and related gambits and Texas is probably Democratic state about now. It’ll flip in a few years, anyway.
@seleneluna70213 ай бұрын
Everyone keeps saying that Cali and Tx are a stretch but if you consider that they're probably the largest economies in the US, and they represent both the Dem and Rep sides, then they would possibly represent the "original US" more effectively. That's why their soldiers look like regularly US military. With TX controlling the Mexico border and gulf coast ports and Cali having a Pacific border, they would both benefit from an alliance as the "real" US. And based on their military power, they're probably also being supported by foreign powers as the "real" US. Alliances rarely have to do with shared ideology. Sometimes the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

People are too blinded by current politics, California and Texas are both massive states that are two of the largest economies in the world. Ahh i think there were 3 secessionist sides against the US Government and when you look at it its easy to see how all sides have jets and tanks and ships etc cause they all have their own national guards and bases and so the military just kinda split. They made Texas and Cali team up because of how different they are politically so its not known if it is right or left. But i think it can make sense both Texas and Cali are big states two of the biggest with alot of people and oil and my guess is that they both just were feed up and decided to team up to become independant. It is that the enemy of my enemy is my friend kinda thing.

Texas and California being the two richest states helps in that theory.

They only mention it once or twice in the film but the President is unlawfully in his 3rd term. They also mention that once the President is dead they will likely disband or turn in each other .

I think what happened here was sort’ve a little false advertising. A24 put out the trailers and adverts to this film acting like it was going to be some sort of action ridden, war flick. When in reality it was actually a movie about the importance of photojournalism. I think there would’ve been a better reception to the movie if it was advertised that way, rather than leaving viewers confused on if they had walked into the right theater.
@Dylan_Thomas13 ай бұрын
I mean you're right that it's MORE about the importance of photojournalism than it is an "action ridden war flick"...or actually, I don't know about that either. But the marketing could have been off in a way similar to how you describe it. I just don't think "the importance of photojournalism" is what the movie is "about." That's a huge theme, a huge part of the movie, a pillar actually, but to me, in not too many words, it made me think mostly about what would be "real" in a situation like this for the U.S., and "the importance of photojournalism" is a fantastic vehicle for that. When I think about this movie it's like 40% what it's like to be a photojournalist in a modern war, and 60% about facing the (possible) realities of living through such a horrible thing in real life America. Maybe they failed to market properly exactly the kind of thing that A24 should be known for, which is very unsettlingly real and "intellectual"? takes on horror.

Then at the end the girl takes Dunst’s characters photo as she is shot saving her. I wouldn’t say she knew she was about to be shot, just thought it would be a good photo of her as a rescuer. But, she pretty much became her ‘hero’ by the end.

The film has given more than enough information about the characters or specifics of the war, you do not need anymore honestly as the rest has to be filled with you the viewer. The film is also very much anti - war and it is also a film that puts 3rd world war situation from the perspective of a 1st world viewer. If people can't empathize with so much of what film portrays - means you're pretty much desensitized and morally bankrupt enough, which makes this film even more important as piece of media art.

That's nonsense, they're only blinding if they're being pointed directly in your face. If you're pie-ing off a room or down a hallway, opp forces can easily see a beam of light and tell where you are based on the light's directional intensity. You don't use white light for clearing unless you absolutely have no other option (i.e. pitch black without nods, and even then red light would better since it doesn't travel as far and the source of the light isn't nearly as distinguishable as white light).

I remember walking out of the theatre in silence before turning to my friend and saying "That was a phenomenal movie and I genuinely don't know if I'm gonna watch it again." The whole point of this film is summed up in Lee's monologue to Sammy in their first night camping out: 'I thought I was sending pictures back home as a warning -- don't let this happen here." "Civil War" doesn't focus on the 'why' of it all rather than a blaring warning of, you DO NOT want this to happen here. For all that some people joke (and some not so jokingly) that 'we need another civil war haha', this movie was kind of meant as a brutally realistic look at exactly how horrific it would be if that were to happen here. They were nearing the end of the war when this film begins, and there are multiple scenes where people are killing each other with absolutely no idea who the other person is. There is no law and order, and the one town that actually looked nice and idyllic was living under the threat of snipers on the rooftops keeping the people there in line. In terms of the filmmaking, the cinematography (especially in Sammy's death scene) is gorgeous, and the sound design is intense. Seeing that final half hour or so in theatres was deeply immersive, to a disturbing degree. The acting is incredible, and without going into heavy detail about their lives, you get a very real sense of who Sammy, Joel, Lee, and Jesse all are by the movie's end. I think it's disturbing because it's absolutely meant to be, and that people who didn't like the movie because they were looking for political messages regarding today's real-world politics missed the whole point of the movie, which, put simply, is that war is horrifying no matter where it is taking place and a civil war is perhaps the worst of them all, and should be avoided at all costs.

Funny thing about saying “walking dead vibes here” when they passed the cars on the road near the start is that scene was filmed on GA-20 near Hampton GA in almost the same spot on the same road as the famous clogged up highway in season 2 of the Walking Dead was filmed.

I'm late to the reaction because I only saw the movie yesterday. I have to say this is an experience. I put it up there with Ad Astra. Where that was Space, this is War Journalism. It's heartbreaking how the same experiences that broke a hardened War Journalist turned the cub Journalist into her replacement. And that everything Lee was trying to protect Jessie from becoming.

Most people right of center think 90% of the goals of "Project 2025" are absolutely ludicrous. Of the 10% that aint ridiculous... Yeah the alphabet boys need to be dealt with. We still need counterintelligence agencies but keep them pointed at foreigners not our citizens, otherwise you get shit like the Feds going online trying to radicalize people on both sides to be their puppets and patsies.

California was a swing state not too long ago. Most of California is red with the exception of the bigger cities, just like Texas. Texas in a decade or two will become a swing state not because the majority of Texas is becoming blue but rather because the big cities are blue and more and more people move to the big cities each year. It's not far fetched that Texas and California get on the same side. One of the favorite states for Californians to move to is Texas. I live in Texas and we're tired of Californians invading our state.
@sarahhughes44373 ай бұрын
"Majority of California" in terms of land, not people. California is heavily blue
@Daniel-mt963 ай бұрын
@TheGunslinger1 Of course people are free to move wherever they please, it's their country. The problem for us living in rural Texas is that because we've had thousands and thousands of Californians moving to our state these past few years, the price of property has increased, rent has increased and we can't afford it. It affects us directly because we don't have that California money like they do, most of us are living paycheck to paycheck and it was fine with the rent we used to have but now we not only do we have to struggle with inflation but also the invasion of Californians making our rent too high. I wanted to buy my own house but now since Californians have been migrating to Texas the price of an average home has gone to the roof, I can no longer afford to buy a house. It's not only my opinion, I'm saying that because that is the sentiment in our communities. It's nothing personal, it's just that them moving here affects us directly.
@Daniel-mt963 ай бұрын
@@sarahhughes4437 Yes you're right, the majority of people are blue. That's why California is no longer a swing state. People have become too liberal, which is another reason why we don't want them to move here. They'll ruin Texas the same way they've ruined their home state.

The moment in cinema where you cant tell if Kirsten Dunst is really Kirsten Dunst or Mary Lynn Rajskub. But since Fox (20th Century Fox ) was bought by Disney and like every good Alex Garland story(yeah ok Devs was so nerdy she could have been there or Kiefer Sutherland aswell) is pretty deep in the story you would have to guess Id say. Only knew it when the credits rolled. But Offerman and Stephen McKinley Henderson wear not too difficult to spot ;).

I thought this movie was fine, However I understand people not liking it as much bc goin in (form the trailers) they probably thought it was goin to be a film about a Civil War when in reality it's just a movie about War Photographers ( In that sense it was a good movie).....A Change in title might have changed the perception of it.

in regards to CA + TX as allies, the director implied in an interview that despite the 2 states' cultural and political differences, they're very similar in their pioneer spirit and have a strong independent history. in the face of a fascist president (offerman), it's not inconceivable these 2 states would put aside their differences and fight a common enemy. 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'

Saw this in theaters and left feeling disappointed. I thought the worldbuilding was quite weak-to the point that I had problems ever really getting absorbed in the story. I understand why Alex Garland didn't want to be more explicit in the politics and sides of the country's split, and that's fine. However, I think parts of it were so vague/neutral that it weakened the actual story and the characters. The cast was fantastic with what they were given, but the only character who actually felt fully realized to me ended up being Jesse Plemons. Alex Garland was intentionally vague, because he wanted this to not be political or choose sides. During the interview circuit, he basically refused to really answer any questions about politics in regards to this movie, and one of the few times he did speak about it, he was pretty explicitly centrist in his views. He also said that he made this film wanting to show journalists as the heroes-but a lot of people who liked this movie thought that it was a critique of journalists 🤷🏿♀️ I watched a lot of interviews and listened to a lot of reviews for this film, and one reviewer (who actually liked the film) said that they found talking about this film with other people to be more interesting than the film itself. I agree with that statement.
@mattcollins35913 ай бұрын
World building is definitely not weak in any means. I live around the area the film is taking place in and it’s exactly like portrayed.

I think the fact that the situation on the ground was confusing was the point. As a civilian, and even as a journo or militia member, the situation is gonna be confusing and ever-changing. And we have seen countless times before, real life is often stranger than fiction. Just look at the Biafran War and the absolute clusterf**k that was the international involvement in that conflict.

I think this movie was fairly good if you just concentrate on the journalists, the actual war stuff was just a location and made little sense. The movie was sold as a Civil War movie and that was the weakest part, but still a worth seeing movie.

guys, ear defence isn't always a good option in war, yeah it stops your hearing degrading, but most ones, mean you can't hear shit and therefor you are useless in battle and a hinderence/problem to your squad

You know when you really can't hear shit? When five guys are next you and they're all suppressing targets with rifle fire. A pair of peltors is only like $800, and they have sound level dependent noise cancelling. Hell, even most cheap ear pro has voice isolation nowadays. In the last decade especially most NATO militaries have made an investment towards equipping everyone with ear pro. My cousin is first year regular Army and even he got issued a pair of peltors right out of the gate, times have changed since the first decade of the GWOT.

@@Ჽum i have just left the british army after spending 23 years in it, in the later years, they trialled different ones that failed massively. They defo werent going to spend 800 on ear defenders for each person, i can tell you that lol

@@ElmStReactions Seriously doubt that, every single British soldier I came across on my deployments in 2017-2018 was either wearing peltors or those little Invisio earbuds with voice isolation, and that was seven years ago at this point. Of course there weren't as many Brits over there during Toral, but just googling it I found MOD articles (2020) stating that they're standard issue and exercise mandatory for every soldier nowadays. I've also talked to plenty of former Army soldiers and Royal Marines during my time in the AFU that said they were issued Peltors in the last few years (which we were issued by the Ukrainians as well, though they pretty much decide what to issue you based on your role and availability, the most common earpro I saw over there was the Howard Leight Impacts, which are only like $50). You act like $800 per person is too expensive for the military industrial complex, it's pennies on the dollar and isn't that big of an investment at all when you're already spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to train and equip the same person. It's far more expensive to not give people ear pro, hearing loss is responsible for billions in disability payouts for the U.S. Army alone, especially in the 2001-2015 era when they started giving everyone TCAPS right out of the gate.
