I think it would be more accurate to say that every GTA game with a number in the title (so far) has always been set in the present day: the "present day" being whatever year the game was released in. Like, GTA IV was originally supposed to come out in 2007 and the development of the game took place from 2005 to 2008 (if we count the delays) so it would be more accurate to say that GTA IV is set in a fictional version of mid 2000s New York instead of saying that GTA IV is meant to look and feel EXACTLY like how New York was like in 2008 specifically.

Given how GTA VC started out as an expansion pack for GTA 3, it isn't surprising that the map was rushed to meet deadlines. Also, Rockstar purposely left Niko's nationality ambiguous and just described him and Roman as coming from a broken-down area in Eastern Europe. They do speak Serbian but R* did not confirm that Niko was from the former Yugoslavia for some reason. Vladimir Mashkov claimed in an interview on Russian TV that he was approached to audition for a role on a then-undisclosed project but turned it down. I imagine if R* did cast him it wouldn't have aged well given Mashkov's support for the Ukraine conflict and how his daughter basically disowned him for that statement.

@paistinlasta18056 ай бұрын
You aren't seriously proposing that it was a novelty for a game to have checkpoints in 2008? Seriously? It wasn't a novelty in 1998 for crying out loud. They probably didn't do checkpoints because no previous GTA had checkpoints. And, ironicly, both GTA IV and GTA San Andreas DO have check points. In both the last mission is seperated into stages, and if you fail you can continue from the start of the stage rather than having to start from the beginning of the mission. That was just how Rockstar did things back then. Maybe it wasn't a good direction, but it was just that, direction, not a limit of the technology of the time. So yeah, "Because this is a game from 2008" means nothing. It should be "This is an older GTA game from a time before Rockstar had adopted their current doctrine of ultra-open world but ultra-linear missions starting in 2010 with Red Dead Redemption and continuing in 2013 with GTA V" But jokes aside, the system felt outdated in 2008, and I'm old enough to barely remember GTA IV being a new game. I know you're better than to just shrug if off with "lol it's an old ass game"
@TheSultan14706 ай бұрын
PastaMan is on to something. But... what about the new mission structure is more linear than that of old? Of course they're linear, it's an A-B cinematic story. It's easy to have leeway when the mission is just "go here, kill this guy"
@paistinlasta18056 ай бұрын
@@TheSultan1470 That's the thing. In GTA V or especially RDR 2, even if the mission is literally just "Go there, kill the guy" they cram in all these cutscenes, sub-objectives and fail states so you can't achieve the goal in the way you want, but in the way Rockstar wanted you to. In the older GTA's you could get creative, and it's really funny how many unique ways there are to complete some of the missions in those. RDR2 will give you a mission fail for literally walking in the wrong direction in some missions.
@TheSultan14706 ай бұрын
