Crossing a FLOODED ROAD to find ENDANGERED Red-cockaded Woodpeckers

The Red-cockaded Woodpecker is an endangered bird that can be found in the Southeastern United States. Join Derek and his girlfriend Claire as they search for this bird in extremely flooded conditions.

There are several pine trees in our backyard and I recently saw a red-cockaded woodpecker on one of the pine trees. It was amazing to see.

Thanks for including the other creatures in your adventure. I was hoping you would mention the narrow-mouthed toads! I recognized them right away. SO loud and like a sheep bleeting! Also, I think it’s worth noting that Longleaf Pine habitat maintenance is largely dependent on humans due to the need for prescribed fire to keep the understory open and help the young regenerate successfully.

The Narrow-mouthed Toads are awesome! Totally agree on the sheep comparison. And that's true about the pines. Keeping that understory clear is really important for the woodpeckers.

I live in Picayune about 30 min from slidell where this wildlife refuge is located and i have red cockaded woodpeckers around my property. I have large old growth slash and loblolly pine and some longleaf too. One ofthe neighboring properties around mine has an open pine grove with grassy herbaceous layer and few hardwoods and i hear their squeaky calls in this stand every day. Its their cluster site and they sometimes forage around my property. I live near the crosby arboretum in pucayune

I recommend southern Arizona for some pretty great birding. The chiricahua mountains are a great place to check. I saw an American Dipper last time I was there. A lot of stuff also visits from Mexico in that region.

I have been there many times, its not normally flooded like that but based off the date he filmed this it was right around the time of hurricane ida. I live in the area of big branch marsh.

We had a downy woodpecker feeding ferociously at our feeder, we live near a spring, in a suburb- and a red bellied pair, now with off spring come every day- but I don’t see the downy anymore. Do you know if they migrate? We live in suburb of Dallas. Thanks, this was so beautiful to see!!

They don't really migrate but they seem to show up more when food is scarce in the winter so the Downy could just be off doing it's own thing
