This was the video I chose to follow and now I have a perfect compost bin in my kitchen garden, instead of having to walk all the way down to a corner of my field to drop my kitchen waste. Apart from being a good bin that's simple to make I want to congratulate you on such a well-structured little film. The filming, editing, commentary and general ambience all adds up to a perfect example of helpful KZbin at its best. Also, I am kind of blind to shapes and spatial stuff so I find it weirdly difficult to follow DIY videos normally, but you got this just right even for someone like me. The tip about assembling the back panels with the help of gravity saved me loads of grief too. Thank you!

I've used a similar method. With my front panel boards, I used a jigsaw to cut a half inch gap along each board between the main upright supports, but leaving the ends of the boards that slot into the channels untouched. This allowed automatic spacing between the front panel boards.

this is an amazing way for doing the compost bin. Some suggestions when you are sliding the decking board you can separate them with some spacers in between to keep the air circulation. this method of spacing between two standing 2 by 2 can be used to make fence which can easily take the boards.super nice porject.

Very nice Composter build and with Decking Boards as well. I use them for making my 4x4 Planters and i make sure i get them with one smooth side on it, as the smooth side would face outwards so it is seen by all. Hope you keep filling that Composter up. Cheers. Barry (Wirral, ENG)

Great video. I built one with my dad this morning using old fence timber, very easy to adjust size depending on what you've got lying around. Next one will probably take half the time now we know what we're doing.

Enjoyed the video. I have a couple of compost bins but they were made from pallet wood and work well. You may need two bins as while you fill one, the second one is maturing. I would reiterate what has been said already and not to forget to treat the cut ends.

Really great simple and nicely presented video. I was thinking of making a compost bin out of decking just like I did with some planters. This helps me visualise a system that works well. One thing that would help would have been quantities of materials you bought for this. I can figure it out though. Thanks so much for a great video.

David Daniels Craftsman If you are starting out with a workshop I would suggest building it around an MFT table if space is going to be an issue. You could build a good MFT table for about $100 to $200 and then a track saw for about $300 to $600. If you have lots of space then start with a Jointer/surface planer and then a table saw. If I could suggest any machine for a person to start with it would be a Jointer/surface planer.

No chance of the decking slots on the front expanding so it becomes difficult to remove? Presumably the way they get treated prevents expansion? Could you add some kind of protective coating? What would be safe that wouldn't leech bad chemicals into the compost?

Damn... I just bought all the wood and treated it with raw linseed oil today to help make it water resistant. But I just got plain 2x6s and the decking boards look so much nicer because of the ridges!

Nice build. Thanks for sharing. Last autumn, nearly winter, I made a compost bin from HT DB pallet wood. I did not want to use any (chemical) treated wood because the compost will also be used for vegetable and fruit plants. After Easter I'll put it outside and indeed mow the lawn. I'll put something like a roof on top so everything can dry better.

This design for a compost bin is the dog's bollocks, the bee's knees, easy as pie and rock solid. I knocked one together this morning, in a couple of hours, for the gardener cum wife. bighands69 Should be fine if you avoid composting food scraps (cooked or otherwise). Stick to garden ‘waste’ and if necessary place a sheet of wire mesh under the bin to prevent rats burrowing up. Where there’s a will.... Composting is a very natural way of cycling ‘waste’ and nutrients!
