I love their raw ballsy rock sound. They were different than a lot of bands at this time because they used less effects and they weren’t overproduced like a lot of bands during this era. All the musicians were super talented as well. Like a super group.

I rank Robert Plant as the best natural pure rock voice of all time and it is obvious to me he has been a huge infleunce upon legions of singers (including myself) and I hear his influence in the singing by Ray Gillen here, and dude from Greta Van Fleet, but Ray was a man on par with Plant, just a phenomenal voice, maybe even better (Plant was the first though so respect please, he broke the ground first) and a pure talent. Buddy from Greta though, and I love the band though they mine Zeppelin and only Zeppelin for look, sounds, even song framework but that singer just ills me out. He took Plants worst vocal malfunction that showed itself maybe twice in his whole recorded carreer, and made it the focus of his whole tone. Sorry, not a talent, a mimic with bad taste.Badlands was the real shit, the change to Jeff Martin on drums turned out to be a huge jolt of inspiration for a bande that was stellar already. Voodoo Highway was just mental, and I still listen to it regularly, wow what a fantastic album, I still listen to it on my heavy rotation, just like Zeppelin,Bad Company, Purple, Floyd, and even some metal, like Priest,Sabbath, and Queensryche, and like every good Canadian, Rush. But my playlist has no room for wanna be Gretas, they are not the deal. Once again, Badlands should have been mega huge, they were so,so, good. Thanks Jake,Jeff,Ray,and Greg for Voodoo Highway, and thanks also to Eric for stellar drumming on the debut album.

He was and is every bit the guitarist Randy Rhoads was, didn't get near enough credit severely underrated! There I said it, especially his rhythm playing very complex rhythms, watching him play the US Festival and playing over the mountain the whammy bar parts and just using both hands on the neck to do it!

Ray's voice live was absolutely incredible, only seeing Alice w/ Layne (for the Facelift tour) beats out seeing Badlands with Ray as my favorite live show (as far as vocalists go). Though I did see Badlands back in 90' at the Palace in Hollywood and was stunned by they're performance. Um.....Nope. You are misinformed and you should do your homework before you post inaccurate and false information about anybody-- especially someone who is no longer here to refute these statements. The fact is -- RAY WAS NOT A HEROIN ADDICT. The info about what happened to him is out there. Years earlier, when Ray was younger, he was curious and experimenting, like alot of people do when they're younger. He ended up using a tainted needle that a relative of his who turned out to be HIV-positive had used. There's more to the story but this is all I'm going to say. We all experiment and do dumb things when we're young. In this case, the consequences proved to be deadly. It's very very sad and a tragedy. But No-- Ray was never a heroin addict. Please, let's remember Ray as the brilliant and talented vocalist that he was. And he was kind, thoughtful, and intelligent and everyone-- everyone -- just loved to be around him. And he was beloved by his family and his many many friends. ~ Rest in Peace, Ray. You are missed by so many. Gone way too soon but you and your amazing voice will never be forgotten. ❤

Anyone know where this was taken from? Glad it's been put out there! Nice live version of Whisky Dust. Spot the CCR riff.

Jeff Martin - great guy, great singer - Racer X was so underrated and miles better than most of the 'hair metal' acts of that same time but X never had the 'radio hits. Back in 2005 Jeff sent me an old beat up drumhead signed and a signed piece of paper with some old Racer X flyers. Just a cool guy. He's hard to find now... he used to have his own official site but now I can't find him.

JohnnyangelNIU I used to hangout with PGA back in the day, took private lessons from home and took live photos for the Racer X band. my band usually opened for them. I looked up to all of them and Jeff was/is the coolest [and very funny] guy ever. I loved his vocals with Racer X and dug his drumming with the Electric Fence and Badlands. wish he'd join up with Jake's Red Dragon. peace

Was always very underrated as a singer, really powerful and Halford-like, excellent drummer too... Racer X are still one of the very best rock-metal bands of all time, in terms of technical shredding it doesn't get better than them really... Martin played with two of the very best and most iconic guitar/musician geniuses ever existed, Paul Gilbert and Jake E. Lee, and Russ Parrish too in The Electric Fence...

David Yergensen Hi David, are you on the Racer X Facebook fan page? It would be great if you joined and shared your pictures. I took a lot too back in the day... Were you in Redline!? I took pictures of Redline too if you’re interested.

If there was any justice in the world, they'd have been huge. It's insane that crap bands like Ugly Kid Joe, Firehouse, Jackal, and Winger were making it bigger.
