I suffer from depression and this music is what coming out of a depressive episode feels like, when the chemicals are working again and you notice it's a nice day, hear a bird sing, see a beautiful colourful dress someone is wearing, smell cut grass on a lawn, feel a cat rubbing itself on you. When you return from the deep dark wood out into the sunlight and love beauty again.

The photography on this film is absolutely superb. Tak Fujimoto, a true master.

Bad Lands was one of Scott's favorite movies. Tony Scott had asked Hans Zimmer to use the theme in Badlands as a reference to create his theme for True Romance. He stated that it represented Alabama's childlike innocence.

This is a piece of music titled 'Gassenhauer' by Carl Orff, which is based off an even older piece of music from 1536 by Hans Neusiedler. Both Badlands and True Romance used that piece of music.

+Krash954 New I'd heard this before but only went back to Orff...

Krash954 Actually the piece in True Romance is an original by Hans Zimmer, but it is an homage to this piece, so they sound very similar.

This music is also used in Lynne Ramsay's Ratcatcher, when Kenny attaches his pet mouse to a balloon and sends it to the moon.

Besides loving Sissy Spacek's portrayal of Caril Ann Fugate, I came away with Carl Orff's haunting contribution to the soundtrack,"Gassenhauer," permanently burned into my brain for the rest of my life. It's the theme song for anyone who has ever gone " bye bye." (Myself included) Orff wrote it on commission as a children's song and hated it. Ironically, it became one of his most memorable pieces.

A haunting theme which makes the movie memorable along with Tak Fujimoto's sumptious photography.

@indigozim Well said. Badlands is so poetic and haunting and is shot so well that you could take a still of practically any frame in the film, hang it on your wall and call it art. Godfather, Easy Rider, Apocalypse etc were great films but, for me, Badlands is one of the best and most underrated films of the "New Hollywood" era- alongside Five Easy Pieces and Paper Moon,

I concur, same with QT, he takes a lot from older cinema from which his audience don't watch so he gets credited for the 'originality' and then when he's questioned on it he just says it's a homage ¬_¬

Hans Zimmer always gets very "inspired" by other composers (Trevor Jones, Alan Menken) .. and then people claim these composers had stolen from HIM! .. Ugh! I better forget that and enjoy this wonderful piece ..

Gassenhauer nach Hans Neusiedler (1536), commonly known as Gassenhauer is a short piece from Carl Orff's Schulwerk. Hans Zimmer piece "You're So Cool", from the musical score of True Romance (1993), is based on this composition. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gassenhauer

yeah your right, true romance was a hybrid film mixed from many genres. (like pulp fiction) true romance is about an 'out law couple' like badlands. with gangster themes and so on... peace :)

this song is called Gassenhauer by Carl Orff, it wasn't composed for Badlands, Malick just used it for the movie.

@McNugget06 The sound track was special. also it was killers -one couple killed non-criminals, the other couple killed criminals including some offensive cops. The girl got off on his violence. However the fight scenes were pure Tarantino. Her and Tony Soprano is a classic. The shoot out was only topped by Kill Bill Samurai battle

It's Carl Orff's Gassenhauer. If Hans Zimmer 'ripped off' Badlands, then Badlands ripped off the German composer Carl Orff.

i think badlands was slow and uneventful...the only thing that made badlands was good casting (sheen and spacek)-they MADE that film-if they had have cast anyone else it would have been too damn slow and boring...ripping off the theme and spacek style narration for tarantino was a smart move...but true romance IS NOT a remake of badlands...its simply inspired by it...and is MUCH better....this was great FOR ITS TIME......stands ok now...but so overhyped and cultified
