Many thanks for another great video! A question for you: how to judge the necessary working distance when positioning for an overhead (particularly a smash)? I've often heard people suggest using the non-racket arm to "point" at the shuttle, but looking at the top women (who tend to extend their arms more fully than the men, perhaps because they seldom jump off two feet), they have their arm extended in front of them but it's slightly off to the side of the shuttle, rather than in view pointing at it.
@PritPachu5 жыл бұрын
Max Renn the arm is not used to judge the distance in the overhead. If you think about it, any decent player at even an intermediate level could hit the shuttle with the non-racket down. Actually, it’s used to a) stretch the chest to engage what’s called the “golgi tendon organ” - it’s a stretch receptor in the muscle that detects changes in muscle tension. So players, as you rightly observed, stretch their arms out and away from the shuttle (specifically to the outside) in order to get the stretch, in order to hit harder. By stretching the arm to the outside, it also allows the shuttle to fall to the ‘inside’ of the arm rather than the ‘outside’, thereby allowing the player to remain head on to the opponent whilst still ‘turning sideways’ to engage the power potential. If you notice, top players’ non-racket hand is also extended back. This is increasing the number of Golgi tendon organs to participate in the stretch reflex and increases power (more muscle”. If wrist is extended then the arm will extend fully as well. Think now and arrow. The further you pull the bow, the more stored energy you have in the system, the further the arrow will go. So no, you don’t really use it to line up because that would mean they’re little stretch and therefore little power. Timing to hit the shuttle actually takes development of the hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. Remember, for underhand shots, would be able to use the non-racket arm to time the hit yet the shuttle is still hit. So it’s all about spatial awareness.
@TPToE5 жыл бұрын
@@PritPachu Many thanks! That's the best explanation for correct use of the non-racket arm I've ever read (indeed, I've never seen any of this explained elsewhere and I have certainly looked). I suppose the next question would be: how to use the arm for maximum effect? Should it drop naturally as one pushes off the ground or should there be a deliberate "pulling" action? Furthermore, why do you think the women tend to extend their arms more fully than the men (who often seem to have a bend in their elbow rather than the arm completely outstretched, at least initially)?

Question: what do you mean when you say you want the BH clear to be “neutral”? Thanks for the video!!
@PritPachu5 жыл бұрын
Homme de Piano thanks for your question. By neutral I mean since it’s a compromised situation, the most one should expect or strive for is to neutralise the rally so that the opponent doesn’t gain an advantage. So at the very least, the BH should balance the equation and at best, put the player in an offensive position if they’re lucky or playing a weaker player or simply have a wicked backhand.

I would add the service as a 7th main shot. For some, it's the most important shot because of the total static control and power while the player is not moving or required for footwork.
@PritPachu5 жыл бұрын
tayonguyen yes I agree. I focused on the shots after the serve in this video. Even though it’s coming from a pro, the average player will always focus less on the serve and more on the shot, hence why videos on backhand smashes are the most popular. But I can’t agree with you more this is why I actually risked making a video on the forehand long deep singles serve.
