This explanation is so insanely detailed yet accurate and needed! I have been playing for over 12 years, I am a very powerfull player but have always struggled with the backhand because I never received an explanation/training as detailed as this. I am going to show my trainer and ask him to guide me like this! Very much appreciated and I am going to binge-watch the rest of your videos!

The answer to the pinned post/question above is: In the video there is a part where I show how the grip changes based on where you’re catching it. Where you catch it all depends on how much trouble you’re in. Ideally, the best place to contact the shuttle on a backhand is right next to you. The further behind you contact it, the less effective the shot. How low or high in space you should contact it again depends on how much trouble you’re in. Ideally, if you’re not in a lot of trouble and have chosen to play a backhand more out of apathy than necessity, your contact point depends on what shot you want to play. If you’re in this place of luxury, the ideal spot will be not quite at the highest point where the arm is fully extended, but just below. At this point there would be a slight bend in your elbow and an angle in your wrist, both of which will allow you to generate enough power for a smash or clear. And this would allow you to have enough play in both joints to play a straight or cross drop. So try to get to the shuttle as fast as you can so you’re in this ideal backhand position. And if you’re not, adjust your grip and just get out of the situation with the most neutral shot possible.

Very nice tutorial for hometraining and attention to the hitchhickers dumb and the flat 8. I use this exercise for the kids with a broomstick to add more weight and enlarge the movement. Two things to add. 1) first movement for the footwork for the backcourt backhandstroke should be pointed at the rear and then more sideways, as opposed to overhead where the first movement is to the side and then to the back fo the court 2) you should allways try to complete the whipslash by not only extending to the shuttle but also bringing your ellbow back to the body (from high to low) before impact.

well i think the first thing you wanna improve would be the footwork. it is very important to hit the shuttle by your side and not behind. This is important not only to improve the accuracy of your shot but also to be able to see where the opponent is so you can adjust the placement of your shot. Another important thing to generate power is to bring the elbow up from a lower position while swinging. This is important for any vertical backhand shot.

Hi Dear, your well explained video is very good for the back hand shots. I think it is more perfectly for the shuttle position is high and have enough time but during a tight match with a better opponent, if we have to reach for the backhand shot after taking a drop shot from front right hand corner, when we reach to taking the same the shuttle may be lower in the back hand side, hence how can we take that ? How can we produce more power for the back hand short ? Can you help me to suggest ?

You sir, are one brilliant teacher, thank you. But I think there is one part that you left out, and that is where in the air should you make contact with the shuttle in relation to your body; should it be just behind, level or in front of your head/shoulder, and how high from the ground is the best place to make contact?
@jjy9415 жыл бұрын
As a general rule of thumb, the best place to hit the shuttle will always be to your front, and at the highest possible point of impact. Therefore, if you can manage a shot that is high and at your front, then take that shot. However, he is also teaching us how to hit shots that are at the back and low, because in badminton, especially when you are under heavy pressure, you will have to make shots like these. TL;DR: take the easy shots (front, high), but practice for the hard shots (behind, low).

One question coach. You use the side of your thumb to perform this shot. I always thought it was the flat of the thumb on the bevel of the racket for backhand clears. Why is it important to use the side of the thumb? Great video though, very well explained and great close up camera from different angles to show each shot!
@PritPachu5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question Alan. The position of the thumb changes depending on how far behind you’re having to contact the shuttle. What matters is that the racket face is square (or flush) at contact of the intention is to hit straight and/or the intention is to produce maximum power. Any slight deviation in the angle of the head will cause slice (therefore a change in direction) and loss of power (the shuttle will deflect along several strings rather than impact on a single point in the strings). So thumb position changes in order to maintain the angle of the head. If the shot you’re playing is right next to you, then you can use the flat side of your thumb because it’ll maintain the said angle in the racket head. But if the shuttle is WAY behind you then the side of the thumb will have to be in contact with the bevel as this is the only way to keep the racket square upon impact.

Thanks coach.. I was wondering how these guys are doing it so easily.. really helpful tips.. practiced it and it works.. i think i should practice more to get perfect short... do you have any video for back hand cross drop?? kindly reply with link..thanks a ton
@PritPachu5 жыл бұрын
tds qatar yes keep practicing until the preload phase disappears or at least becomes more subtle. I have the raw footage for the BH X DROP. Will put together as a proper video soon. For now. Turn the racket inwards by shifting the way you hold the handle (turn onwards by 1/4”) so racket head faces the corner you’re trying to hit to. Then slice the shuttle from the outside. If you can at least see that the shuttle is going x-court (even if you’re not hitting it over the net) you’re on the right path.

Great video! looking forward to developing this shot - Off-topic, but are they supportive socks you are wearing? I sprained my ankle a few years back but still feel it today. Any support helps, but the ankle brace I used is a bit bulky, I'm looking for something a bit more intermediate.
@PritPachu5 жыл бұрын
Mark .G they’re actually a type of knee support for my ageing knees! They have “stays”in them for rigidity. I have them on all the time in the event when I’m playing and training a high level player. It’s also just a comfort thing to know they’re there but I try not to actually wear them too much in order to keep strong. Unless you’ve damaged your ankles I would implement a strength and conditioning (S&C)program focusing particularly on your ankle stability. Check out Athlean X on you tube and see what Chris Cavalier has to say on the subject. I will be making videos on S&C.
