What have a service and a smash in common? More than you think I guess! For coaches and players that are in charge of their own training it is extremely important to have a basic understanding of movements if you want to correct or work on different technical aspects of your game. In this video I want to show you how every shot in badminton can be structured and what kind of movements are important for those phases, no matter what shot you wanna play.
0:00 Intro
0:25 Starting Position
1:37 Backswing
2:37 Hitting phase
4:06 Follow through
--Additional Info--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Especially at the net, there are some shots, where you do not have all the 4 phases that I showed you in the video. A tight net shot for example can be played with almost no racket movement at all (as you can see at 0:40), so there is no real backswing, hitting phase and only a little follow through.
--Characteristics at the Elite level--------------------------------------------------------
When you look at the elite level, many times you will have a hard time finding a backswing of the racket when those players play from the net. In general Elite players can play different shots from a very similar and small movement so they are very deceptive. A long backswing is important to produce power, so you will also see a lot of racketmovement when topplayers hit a smash. But at the they try to minimize the backswing, to make their shots harder to read for the opponent, or they even you use the backswing to trick the opponent. Pulling the rackethead back quickly will let the opponent think, that there will come a shot with power. If you then manage it to slow down the movement and play a good net shot, you have good chances of scoring a direct winner.

I think this Video helps me understand it finally. I play in a local club with coaches, but it seems they never explained the whole story behind hitting the shuttle correctly. All they said was to do the body rotation, underarm rotation and body position. However, they never talked about how to grip the racket during the shot and what crucial role the finger movement plays in order to accelerate the racket even more. The result was stiff shots with a lack of power and bad precision. Thank you for the detailed explanation, Tobias! I will definitely try to focus on this matter in future trainings.

another illuminating discussion and demonstrations. in your discussion of the overhead 'backswing' @2:06, i would point out that 'throwing the elbow forward' happens in a later stage of a kinetic chain of events beginning with the feet pushing against the floor and traveling upwards into rotation of the hips, and then the elbow follows this rotation and is 'thrown', or flows, with it. the backswing you are talking about begins with hip rotation, which is an essential link in the chain of motion. i see many club players failing to initiate power from the ground, not rotating the hips, and merely 'throwing' their elbow at the shuttle with a chopping action. the resulting shot is weak, flat, and poorly timed and controlled, with the player's feet usually in no position to reply to the next shot. also, in the overhead swing it would be more useful for me to think about throwing the elbow UP rather than forward in the overhead swing, whether it's clear, drop, or smash. or maybe say, energy gushes upwards like a high power fountain from the floor, and at the apex of this upward flowing energy, as far from the floor as possible, the racket head emerges with intense velocity focusing energy forward only when striking the shuttle. the point is that regardless of whether you are hitting a clear or smash, the work the player is doing in this type of shot is mostly upwards work, from the floor, from the center of the earth, not forwards-direction work. the forward is more like follow-through that happens almost effortlessly once you've done all that upwards work. at least that is the way i see it that i find most useful in self-evaluating and improving my shots

You talked about the angle in the beginning of the hit. I am coming from volleyball and having a large angle in the beginning is actually way better (for shoulder health and swing potential), very newschool though. As the swing is actually pretty much the same what do you think about starting with a more dropped down elbow. Look up circular swing or low elbow to see what i mean. Would love to hear your thoughts about it

@tobiaswadenka8435
@tobiaswadenka8435 3 жыл бұрын
I am using the ArcSaber11. When you have problems keeping a stable wrist position during shots i would recommend to go for a lighter racket. There are so many rackets available and choosing a racket is a very individual thing so it is hard to make a good suggestion here. I will try to make a video on some racket reviews in the future
