BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS • THE 1993 COMPETITION - PART TWO

Situated about 100 miles west of London, Badminton is a 5 star Equestrian event, and one of only 6 such events in the world. Badminton is the oldest, originating in 1949, and is generally regarded as the most prestigious event.
Badminton Horse Trials is one of the toughest and most exciting equestrian events - the pinnacle of the worldwide horse trials calendar. Horses and riders compete over 4 days, each day consisting of a different discipline. The 1st competition is a dressage test, demonstrating Obedience, Discipline, Accuracy and Elegance. Next, they need to prove their fitness, athleticism and stamina by tackling a 4 mile cross country course jumping solid man-made and natural obstacles within a set time. Lastly, the competitors must complete a course of show jumps designed to test their agility and accuracy, again within a given time, to demonstrate soundness and the ability to recover. 12:00 ish, horse and rider fell. Note horse making ‘baby mouth’-an equine gesture of submission “ don’t hurt me.” For me, saddest moment in eventing.

By the way, the excellent William Fox-Pitt did not go to Oxford. He went to Goldsmiths. Not that it matters. On on a far more relevant point. It is not worth comparing the BHT of today with this one thirty one years ago. The dressage tests were often very poo then and of course, the speed and endurance of four phases made it far harder, especially on the steeplechase. Also no rider may remount after a fall or an unseated. Health and safety is paramount for both equids and riders.
