But most likely not, The living quarters will be up front so the front axle loading will be pretty low, most of the weight is going to be on the rear axle and there is a set limit as to what that can be. He might chop the rear chassis rails and make the rear end ramped to make loading a car in easier. The stock car guys do this on old buses and coaches all the time. I was an HGV engineer back in the '80s and'90s, the era of the Ford Cargo, and I've worked on hundreds of those things, including many applications similar to yours, so I confess I laughed heartily and mercilessly when I saw the fixed cab - those Dover engines are designed to be worked on from the top and the sides, so we had a special hatred for coachbuilders who fixed the cabs down. Even routine maintenance can be a nightmare, and anything serious like changing a head gasket becomes nigh impossible. Still, I suppose for what you're doing, it will be a good choice body-wise. One thing that springs to mind - as I recall, they had a tendency to seize the kingpins, so make sure you grease them religiously. Also, the gearstick linkages flop around like a fish in a bucket and wear out pretty badly, so plenty of spray grease on it (if you can get to the underside with that fixed cab...). Oh, and I believe someone mentioned open ended ratchet spanners - I don't know if they still do them, but I have a set of Snap On open ended ratchet spanners in my toolbox, I kid you not. I imagine you can still get them. I look forward to seeing what you do with this - a real trip down memory lane for me, a good project and I don't have to work on it, an added bonus :-)

@@christopherbedford9897Not in the slightest; we use miles per gallon so we know how far we go on a gallon, rather than the continental system of how much fuel you use for 100km which is utterly bizarre :D
@christopherbedford98975 жыл бұрын
@@sl077766 Umm well (a) to use MPG you have to convert litres to gallons so yeah, bit of a nuisance and (b) it's only "utterly bizarre" because you're not used to it. My father called it something similar when we metricated in South Africa in the 70s (in the 70s! How far behind you are!!!) and he never converted - but then, he refused to use a calculator either, and insisted on doing all the calculations by long division. Yes, he was that reactionary. I've been using l/100km since my first car in 1981 and when everyone uses the same measurement it makes perfect sense - after all, it's not the numbers that matter, it's how they compare to similar vehicles and to what your vehicle has been doing for the last "x" months or years.
@mattjohns33945 жыл бұрын
@@sl077766 L/100km seems bizarre (ok. IS bizarre) but it's great for marketing. Better economy gives a smaller number at the front. We use it in Aus and I grew up with it, but it is really meaningless compared to km per litre.
@sl0777665 жыл бұрын
@@mattjohns3394I've no prob using km/litres but at least do it the right way around ie how many km on a litre, l/100km is plain stupid (imho of course :D ) and sod the marketing!

From reading the title I was really hoping this would be a Nissan S-Cargo with a fold-out tent and a diesel swap so it'd have enough torque to pull a trailer with Binky in it.

I never realised how enjoyable it would be to watch someone else deal with all the rust and dirt that drops off the underside of a heavy vehicle when a hammer is involved.
