"Lillies of the Field" Tribute

This video is a tribute to the movie "Lillies of the Field" which was released in 1963 & it starred Sidney Poitier(who won an Academy Award) as Homer Smith & Lilia Skala as Mother Superior.
Here is a brief plot summary:
Sidney Poitier plays Homer Smith, an aimless ex-GI who takes a temporary handyman job at a Southwestern farm maintained by five German nuns. It is the cherished dream of the Mother Superior (Lilia Skala) to build a chapel (or, as she says, a "shapel"). She is convinced that the personable Homer has been sent from Above to help her realize her dream. He protests loudly and rudely, but she will not be dissuaded. How Homer accomplishes her goal, endears himself to the surrounding townsfolk, and avoids an arrest for a previous crime, comprises the heart of Lilies of the Field. The film, adapted by James Poe from a novel by William E. Barrett, was later remade for television, and it won Poitier an Academy Award for Best Actor, the first time that award was given to an African-American. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This is my all time favorite movie. In 68 years I've seen a lot of good movies. But finding this RIGHT NOW is a TRUE BLESSING. I desperately needed something to reach in & stir the love, joy & happiness that was once my life. As I watched carefully, (Of course Sidney was beautiful.) But when the Mother was sitting W/ Homer & He said "Correction, Thank You." Her response still has me crying tears of wonder. As it looked as though through Gods Grace, she finally got it. Such a sweet movie - a lovely relic of my religious past and still remembered fondly. I remember attending a lecture at Rock Valley College in IL in 1982 by Jester Hairston, the man who wrote (and overdubbed) "Amen." He was an interesting fellow.

I saw this in 1963 (don't figure out my age, LOLOLOLOLOLOL), and to this day, I understand why Mr. Poitier won the Academy Award--he totally OWNED this movie. Under NO circumstances do I want to see a remake--I'm not sure it would work.

I have to say-the most beautiful movie/message. It is the embodiment of how we should treat our neighbors regardless of your religions, beliefs, race, nationality. Whoever wrote this was a genius and I wish humanity would learn their lessons from this movie

@@JohnSmith-ct5jd The film, and the book it was written from, are based on a real life story of the Abbey of St. Walburga was founded in 1935 from an abbey of the same name in Bavaria (not East Germany). Sisters from the motherhouse were sent to America to establish a monastery that was to be a potential place of refuge for the nuns in Germany from the Nazi regime.

Thanks for that. I actually own it, but it's nice to be able to share a link. I was surprised you didn't fit the "insurance" scene in there. :] Poitier was my absolute favourite actor ages 9 to 14 or so (from 1970-ish) and this along with To Sir With Love top the list...not to mention Guess Who's, In the Heat, etc etc. What a great presence he's been.
