The main thing about modern ice skates design-wise is the blades which quite literally cut into the ice, a Medieval Dutch innovation. Early on they were essentially just small specialised skis used for crossing ice with the propulsion often done by a pole; oldest known examples, made of animals bone, come from Finland ca. 5,000 ya where they presumably arose out of the frequent need to cross the very plentiful lakes of the region in winter. Biboo's powerset is kinda vague but I'd assume she'd be able to alter the shape of her -candy feet- gem shoes at will...?

@@EndoftheBeginning17 I've kind of gotten the impression her tendency to stumble is similar to my mother's - not clumsiness but just not watching your footing because you attention is elsewhere (and short as she is she kinda needs to keep her gaze high to properly take in her surroundings). She apparently learns dancing quickly and without issues so it's not like there were some baseline issues with her coordination and balance. Ice skating is done on a very fundamentally smooth and level surface so none of that matters there.

It's so crazy to me thinking about not being able to swim. I grew up in south Florida, where meeting someone who can't swim is like meeting someone who can't read. It just feels like an essential skill you learn as a little kid, even though it's absolutely not. xD All the talk of different kinds of "strokes" and such just sound like making it more complicated than it is. I never learned any of them, and have little to no idea what any of them are called. I just swim! Just get in the water and figure it out! It's one of the least complicated skills there is. That said... I can't ice skate at all. I've tried a few times, as a kid, as a teen, and even once as an adult, and it went the same each time. I cannot even stay standing. No damn balance at all.

That’s crazy to me. Literally the first thing they taught us was to float on our backs and then tread water. Something like: look at the sky, move your arms a bit, see, you can float. Now look at the wall of the pool, move your arms a bit, kick lightly, see, you can stay here and not drown. 😂

it is easy. it is reaching adulthood w/o practice that makes it seem hard. intrusive thoughts. needs to make many, many attempts at remaining vertical, all the while practicing at defaulting to on one's back. relaxing is hard, when your animal brain thinks you will sink. when you lay on your back, you realize you can breath w/o any physical effort, then suddenly fear&anxiety are greatly reduced. Perhaps that’s part of why almost any time I tried to lay back and just float, I mostly couldn’t. Like SOMETIMES my nose would stick out lmao. And sometimes I basically just sank. Literally until AFTER I graduated, I was probably about the size of someone at least 3-5 YEARS smaller. Like at 13 I weighed LESS than the FLYER on the cheer team. By like 5lbs, but still. And I was probably like 5’4. I was the size of the average 8 year old guy, I think. Though that was also when most of the rest of my growth spurt came. I got to I think about 5’8 and 160lbs after Freshman year. Without my facial hair, though? I could still easy pass for like 3 years younger, minimum. I probably could’ve gone back to high school at like 22 and passed as a Senior. Now though? I’ve had gray hairs for probably about 5 years and I just turned 31 lol. I probably look at least 33.

If I remember right, the test at the local fitness center pool when I was growing up, to not need to wear their safety floatation device thing, was to tread water for 60 seconds without using your arms. I don’t really have any clue why. You’re not going to lose half the function of your body and still be able to not drown for 60 seconds and give the lifeguard time to save you. You’ll either lose all function, or keep all function. At least, probably. Unless maybe you have a stroke in your brain and ONE arm loses function? Idfk dude 🤷‍♀️ But honestly, I did it first try. Really wasn’t hard. Idk how you can doggy paddle and not tread water. One of my first memories about swimming is I hadn’t fully learned how to swim, and accidentally fell in the pool in all my clothes. I literally just doggy paddled to the stairs. My father didn’t even jump in, despite being literally next to me when I fell. And he used to be a volunteer firefighter and EMT. Like, the definition of the type of person who SHOULD be like, “MY SON WHO DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO SWIM FELL IN THE POOL? I’M IN!” But instead he was like, “Let me wait like 30 seconds and see if he’s dying or not.” (It didn’t actually take nearly that long for me to surface and start paddling to the stairs… but still. I’m pretty sure if I had a kid and they fell in, I’d MAYBE take my electronics out of my pockets and jump in. Or maybe I’d just jump in, F my electronics. Idk.) Anyway, since that day, I’ve been able to swim. But honestly, I learned ONE better way to move my arms, which was how I NATURALLY swam underwater anyway, and was just like, “Huh. What if I move my arms like this instead of splashing about like a moron?” And I hated myself for not thinking of it years sooner lmao. I think it’s basically the breast stroke style? But you just kinda move your arms in circles, while kicking your legs directly under you. Practically doggy paddle style but down instead of behind. Boom. Treading water 🤷‍♀️

@@bankkunarak _Obligate ram breathers_ that can't pump water through their gills and are reliant on the flow generated by forward motion, yeah. Limited to a handful of open-ocean species that basically have no reason to ever stop swimming in the first place. One notable feature is they don't have swim bladders, in common with all cartilaginous fish, and use other means of buoyancy control - most notably a kind of oil stored in the liver. (Sand tiger sharks also store air in their stomachs which acts as a simple swim bladder.) And since pound for pound their skeletons only weigh about a third of that of bony fishes they have less need for additional buoyancy to begin with.
