I intended to watch it as my first, but got confused and ended up watching Gaogaigar and Getter Robo instead because they both started with a G, and then when I did watch Guren Lagann, I could see how derivative it was. Ironically, the middle part that everyone seems to hate, was the better part because that was when it tried to do something original.

It’s worth a watch for the solid story and the well-animated big fights; just go in knowing that if you see default thugs, you’ll probably see them go down with the same animations you saw the last time Kenshiro ran into default thugs 🤣 the thugs aren’t dangerous enough to be worth extra animations 90% of the time anyway. They animate much harder when it counts though, and again the story is pretty solid.

Most anime newbies watch one of the long Shonen animes as they grow up whether it be One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Bleach etc. In my experience, it's pretty normal to have only watched whatever one you grew up watching. Don't think I know anybody who has watched ALL of the big shonen names. (for the record mine was Dragon Ball)

Having watched the movies again recently for their 15th anniversary, it occurs to me that the movies are pretty terrible for exposition. They're a great refresher for those who watched the series with a spectacle of final battles in each, but the setup for the anime is already bare bones enough, and the movies shave them down even further. it definitely would've worked better if there were more episodes to meet, set up, and establish all the Dai Gurren-dan like Iraak, Kidd, Zorthy, Jorgun, Balinbow, Leite, Makken, etc. We're really only left to invest in the Black Siblings and the core group. I say this with love as it remains my all time favorite anime, but i have to acknowledge its flaws. I hope Bae gets around to watching the full anime some day, it's not long at all.
