When you mean the 30.6 is that in the same pack format just with higher capacity cells? If so they will have a lower max amp draw that the 30q or hg2 cells in the 25.6 pack. Which is fine for stock but if you run the external controllers you want the higher discharge rates.

Great review, I was about to convert a folding bike using the BBSHD, but I'm glad you mentioned that the default controller is not up to snuff, and that an external controller (such as the ASI Bac 800) would be ideal for long-term use. Because of your video, I'm putting my conversion on hold.

Impressed by your knowledge. I have a BBSHD mounted to a Scorpion recumbent trike. The motor is great but I am plagued by ugly bang-crash wallops of chain slipping which I don't seem able to eliminate completely. I have changed my chain and 9-speed 36T cassette and still get nasty noises. I measured my chain with a 12" ruler and there is no stretch to worry about. I use a 65T chainring so that I can still pedal at up to 53kph-could this be the cause? Failing any further investigations, I would love to replace my derailleur with an IGH 5-speed if only I could find one to cope with the torque of my Bafang. Do you know of one which would?

I wish I knew of a hub that can handle that amount of stress. Folk have tried the Sturmy 3 spd but it fails eventually. Is the chain slipping on the rear sprockets? The small ones. Thx for all this great info. I'm pondering the cyclone motor (for a fatboy or a full suspension 27.5). I have a motorbike background so great to hear that you also don't find the brake cut offs, gear sensor, necessary and use throttle skills to modulate. The BBSHD is over featured, so cyclone sounds affordable power to me. I can't afford the CYC at this point. I would use the luna sine controller or get the phaserunner (however I heard you need to program them). Anyway, if you have any advice on the cyclone in comparison to bafang and cyc, I would really value it. cheers. Endless sphere is the best place to get info on the cyclone. I have never installed one so it would be bad form to advise you on that. Grin who make the phase runner are in Vancouver so they may be able to assist. People have used the cyclone kits. I'd search on endless sphere and look at probes builds. Electric bikes is lunas forum so likely info on there are well. Glad you like the channel. Cheers

Appreciate the kind words. I think I am going to eventually design a battery. I have a few ideas I'd like to see that are not really done right now. For the time being though I'm keeping it simple. The 52 volt 30q cell pack I got has been flawless and it's nice to Monitor it with the bluetooth bms. Em3ev produce possibly the best quality battery on the market. Others are catching up tho. Luna seem to have stepped up their game. it's worth noting that the shipping chain em3ev use for batteries results in very low import tax at least in Canada. Good luck with your build!

I´m using similar setup on my Fat cargo and it runs on stock motor perfectly. Stock controller. 36t Lekkie, 11-50 chinesium cassette was gone after 2300km (I rip the spider that holds the center section like you... I use the middle section more) was replaced with the same chinesium cassette. Same chain after 3300km; kmc Ebike 10sp chain (clean and lube every wheek). 21ah 52v from Samsung 35E and Daly 50Ah BMS b inside a Polly DP-9 case. (built the battery myself) Rear hub is a NOVATEC 102SB 36h with 13g spokes. That novatec hub is strong AF and if you just replace the shitty 9mm Qr and use a 10 or 12 mm thru axle it holds even better. For braking I have a Magura MT5 E "closer" set. It comes with the brake cutoff conection ready, and "pre brake click" function; the lever is made in 2 pieces that allows you to click and cut the motor before it starts braking. I use that as a "clutch". MDR-C 203mm disc on both wheels, also super sturdy. The trick with the stock bafang controller is to make acceleration progresive changing the "current startup" setting to a softer one. It kinda eliminates that "on/off switch feeling. BTW: the total weight is around 220kg daily on that bike. No issues so far. Great build! I will definetly try thta ASI controller in the future!

@@HighVoltageKits MT5 worked great for me . They have a special e-bike lineup. The MDR-P and -C discs. And the ebike brake pads. There is a Shimano setup that also runs 4 piston and costs way less than Saint. I recomend using heatsink pads. The good thing about the Maguras is that you have individual replacement for all the parts of the system. Regards

That's the review I've been looking for. You went through all the trials and problems then fixed them and told us about them. I'm still saving for the battery which turns out to be the same one you have. Now I also have to save for the aftermarket controller and I'll be ready to install. Handy tip; use silicon to secure your motor to the down tube. I used quite a big amount and it's very secure. It will never move.

@@HighVoltageKits My 1st Ebike (about 10 years ago) was made up for me by Daryl who designs the Lekkie products here in NZ. He also helped me with the my latest BBSHD install and said that it was a good idea to use silicone to ensure the motor did not move. I just used a good quality Black Silicon sealant and it has worked very well. There is no movement possible. If you need anymore info I'm glad to help. I have also asked you a few questions on your site, just now, about your Kit that is out of stock. I hope you get some in soon.

Hi Captain, I am eyeing BBSHD but my biggest problem right now is the frame. How comfortable are you with the rigid fat bike frame? I plan to ride to get around my farmland which is very bumpy and rocky at places. I can't be sure if a rigid fat tire frame would dampen the shocks enough, or whether I'd need a full suspension frame. Then the problem with suspension frames is the inability to slap rear panniers and baskets. I'd like to hear your opinion on frame selection, if you ever see this comment. Thanks for the videos.

With fat tire bikes the tire itself is suspension as you can use quite low pressures. Also the thud buster seat posts help. I now use a rock shocks front suspension and I recommend that for sure. If you need the 120mm bbshd I would move on it now as they have changed the model and it might not be available much longer. Thanks. The eggrider has changed alot since I first used it and is much better with the ASI controller. We are testing it as an option with the kits we make for the bbshd. I would check with the supplier in the UK. Whether or not the eggrider can be used depends on how the wiring harness is made. At 72 volts without protection the voltage will fry both the eggrider and usually the controller too. So caution is needed. We have built an adapter for this purpose but it's still in testing. Well. No it's not road legal. Plenty of people do use then though. There are ways to have road legal settings for it. The performance is utter trash at 750 watts nevermind the uks 250. Because you always use the large sprocket at the back, don't you find that it is not good for pedaling as the speed goes up? Like your feet just spin around, or are you only using the throttle? I recently installed mine and find that I'm always in the smallest cog at the back otherwise peddling is pretty impossible

Yeah. I gave up on peddling with my setup. It's just for transport and getting about. Once rpms get up that high there is not much you can do apart from use a smaller gear.

Oh it was too fast stock. Yeah I guess you lower the amount of assist. As soon as you up the power though the motor will attain a high rpm. There are some settings you can do tho. Have you searched for Karl's special sauce bbshd?

I own a 2019 Specialized Fatboy and I'm very interested in a similar build. Even though my Bottom Bracket is 100mm, it appears I would definitely need to purchase the 120mm BBSHD because the 100mm BBSHD motor would not clear the chain stay. Is that correct? Also it looks like I would need to get the Lekkie 42T chainring. Do you recommend the 170mm Lekkie OFFSET Buzzbar crank arms or does a company like RaceFace or other make a high quality compatible crank arm? The rear cassette on my bike is a SRAM 11-42T so I guess that should work fine. Last, are there any specific spacers, brackets or other items that help the motor mounting process? I'm hoping to purchase everything I need at one time. Thanks for all the great videos!

I used the 120mm. The crank arms are square taper although I'm happy with the lekkie ones others should work. In terms of spacers I am using 6mm in total. You can get them from most bike stores. I asked for a few to be sent out. Pretty common things tho at bike stores. I used a stack of washers on the other side. A bbshd kit from luna is as good one from anywhere reputable. They have a hotrodded controller but I think you have to buy a full bike from them for that. I used em3ev for mine but I'm a Brit and the owners a Brit so a bit of loyalty I guess. I'd price out on both and go with the cheapest.

My rear derailleur is locked due to wear and tear so I had to fix it in place. Ideally I would maybe have three gears my 42t and two in the 30's Maybe a 36 and a 32t. If you check out electroncycles in the UK there are some good pictures about how they spaced out a cassette to do this. They also had a little gear as a get home emergency gear if your system failed and you wanted to ride it like a regular bike for a bit. I would make sure the cassette is of good quality steel and that it comes apart so it can be rearranged. I have not done much hunting for one. I was going to wear the current setup out first and then see. I have hear good things about the sturmy archer 3 speed internal for fatbikes taking up to 3000w so maybe I will lace a wheel with this at some point. Cheers!

I swapped my 30t mighty mini chain ring for a luna eclipse 42t, i was snapping chains and trashing my derailleur and cassette. I also swapped out my rear derailleur for a Sturmey Archer rs-rk3 IGH, only 3 speed, but i pretty much ride it in the second gear with a 24t rear cog when im climbing. That controller looks awesome.. great video..

You are welcome. 1700 watts is 1700 watts although the field weakening will give a top speed boost. It will consume a little more at equal levels for that reason. But I know a few people that ride 72 volts and get great range but doing what you are suggesting and limiting the power somewhat. Hope this helps. Cheers

i chose the Lekkie 32T Narrow/Wide chainring to make the motor spin faster and have more torque without lugging the motor down and causing it to over heat.. I also carry a wet wash rag.. I put it in a ziplock, then lay it over a 2 liter pop container and place it in the freezer. That stays wet and cool for a very long time. If the motor starts to feel hot, i simply place it around the motor. :) My situation is different because i'm on a Recumbent Trike. The chainline is much longer and easier with a Rohloff Speed Hub.

Thats a great idea! Love the bbshd recumbents. Some use a temp strip as well to monitor. I started out on the 36t but the chain line sucked. The 46 was too big! Very jealous of your speed hub! Cheers

@@HighVoltageKits The Rohloff was my big investment... the rear 559 (26"0 wheel with the hydraulic disc brake was $2k. I really like your Specialized Fat.. I imagine a Rohloff for the Fat tire would cost more in labor to lace. the Great things about a recumbent that uses 3 chain length, is that you can select any Lekkie to meet any needs... I am towing a trailer and wanted the motor to spin fast and stay cool on hills while touring. I use the UPP 52v 17.5ah x 2 batteries (35ah) These have the Sanyo NCR18650GA cells for high power/long range. It was far cheaper to order them on AliExpress than order here. I saved $800 on the set. Nice job on the video presentation.. You are well informed.

Im new to this putting a bbshd on old Cannondale F900. I put the shift sensor on and now my shifting skips. In the video you comment you didn't see the need for shift sen and only use the big rear gear? What did you mean? I know you had gear changes in your other vids. Yeah it helps alot with voltage sag/voltage drop half way through a ride, but the main reason is so i can charge to 90% (4.1V per cell) (get almost double the cycle life out of my batteries) and still run a max voltage of 61.3V at 4.1V per cell, best of both worlds.. so to speak. Whats the "full name" of the controller ? as ERT sell quite a few different versions I got the info from your other videos, should of looked their first...lol😬 Enjoy those Trails, Thanks 😊👍🏼

Battery is 25.5 amp hour triangle pack from em3ev.com. I used 30q cells but they have hg2 as well which are higher drain I think for 50amps. I got their bbshd motor kit and I use the eggrider v2 display. The asi I got from electricrt.com. Em3ev.com will let you pick other bits including the essential lekkie bling ring. If you run into any problems let me know and I'll send more info. Cheers.

When i shift i would do the same thing just flick the brake and shift but now i have i.g.h 8 speed. I had a 42 tooth bling ring and it rounded off because i didnt keep a eye on it and it started sharking. So i got the 46 tooth bling ring.

Cool, which IGH are you using? Did you get much of a boost with the 46t. I could not go that big on mine as it would not clear the chain stays. I think I went through all three sizes. I should have just gone with the middle size to start with lol!

Great job, very useful video. I intend on riding my fat bike off road and using pedal assist mostly. Interested to know what range and speed you are getting out of that battery, being that you just use the throttle. If you are referring to the luna ludicrous controller you will get more watts and amps. No field weakening though and no option for 72 volts I dont think. It's an adaptation of the old controller to take more power but lacks the features and sophistication of the ASI I use peddle assist more than you might think especially in busier areas or when I just want to cruise. But less so on the videos I have done. Even on level 5 the pas is only 1000watts. With the big battery you can get hours out of it. If you use pas 2 it's only 400watts of assist so the range would be huge on a 25 amp hour battery. Running the throttle the range is about 40km. That's without dropping the battery voltage too low. You get way more charge cycles if you dont charge it full or drop it below 20%

I am a big and tall guy, so looking for torque to climb more than straight line speed (though I'd like it to at least do 40km/h). I was also considering getting a second wheelset that is 27.5" and runs fat bike hubs to commute around on, if I liked it - the knobby 4.7" Vee Bulldozer tires (that came on the bike), besides not being suited for that purpose, are very expensive to get her in New Zealand and cost more than my cars tires! - though I'd probably replace them with something else, as they self steer a bit.

Luna make perfectly good bikes to ride on the bbshd platform and their upgraded controller works very well. You ought to get the speeds and torque you want. I had no issues doing any of this with the stock bafang controller. The ASI just adds smoothness and acceleration. But you will have a blast under warranty and can upgrade anytime you want. The second set of wheels is a good one. Wish I had the cash free as my knobbies are very noisy on the road but I'd like the extra traction on trails...but I cant be doing swapping tires all the time!

The only problem I have with the Luna BBSHD - it is sold here through an Australian agent and incurs $80 NZD in shipping, plus GST on top of that coming in to the country. Whereas I could get a stock model from China for a few hundred less (by the time you add GST) and with free shipping. Is there much involved wiring up the external controller, do you need to solder, or it is just plug and play?

No soldering if you get it from www.electricrt.com if you pick the eggrider or the colour display option it should be straight plug and play. The hardest part is unplugging the stock controller as it is siliconed in. The phase wired are easy. The hall sensor is the trickery part. I gently removed the silicone with a jewelers screwdriver and wiggled it out. I did very well on the duty and tax ordering from em3ev.com that was to Canada. I paid very little. Nothing at all on the battery.

I am pretty sure you will still need the freewheel as it uses a tensioner with the derailleur. Never seen a fixed gear bbshd. But I'd ask that question on my discord or endless sphere. Internal hub gears can work with stock bbshd but must be a strong one. Check how much torque in NM they can handle. Hope this helps. Cheers

The chain has a very straight chainline and the ratio is kind at 1:1 These motors are very strong so they tolerate it very well. Lots of folks with this setup have thousands and thousands of kms on them. Your point is valid. I'm sure they will wear faster with both its just not to the extent that would make it not worthwhile. It's easily one of the best but most misunderstood feature of the ASI controllers supplied by ERT. The 50 watts of power can easily be cancelled by braking or peddling backwards. But it allows the throttle and PAS to be much smoother. Each time the chain stops moving it goes slack so when you make it tight with the throttle or pas it yanks or snaps. It wears chains and is a jerky way of doing it. It might feel a bit strange at first to not have the motor stop but the benefits are worth persevering with.

I used the 120mm. It all depends on if the gear housing hits the chain stay. You can get a conversion kit to make the axle longer though. Its not quite a simple. Yes it will stop the nylon gear failing but it will likely transfer the failure point to the pinion. It certainly won't be quieter. There is now a PEEK gear that promises to fall in between. You need extremely high temps to get the nylon gear to fail. I have not so far. The metal one I have gathers dust. You are better off gearing the motor to be kind. Cheers.

I'd start by building your bike with the bbshd kit from luna and get used to it. Have fun riding. It's a good idea to start slow in my opinion anyway. Once you are happy you can look at upgrades. If you have a look through my older videos you will see my first couple on the bbshd. Another one at six months. A few on chainline. You can always sell your stock controller. After a few months if you want more power you can get the Bac 800 kit from electricrt.com If you rush it though it's easy to cook the nylon gear in the bbshd. I have lots of videos running it stock in the snow and through floods. It's great. I took my time and I recommend you do as well. I'll be happy to answer any questions!

I have converted my mountain bike using a Luna BBSHD ludicrous kit, that's 2600w with their 52v LG battery and their 50 amp controller. It's very stealth and I don't need to pedal. There is no way you're reaching 40 MPH with a single gear setup. I can only reach 38 MPH if I'm on the smallest 11T rear sprocket and with a very large front 42T chain ring. I would absolutely melt the internal BBSHD nylon gear and probably mess up a bunch of other internals if I only operated the bike on the smallest gear all the time. Especially starting, climbing, etc. And if I upgraded the nylon gear to metal I would just strip the metal. What you are doing is running your kit as a single gear with the largest rear-sprocket, which is fine but you will not reach 40 MPH. 18/20 MPH tops would be my guess. But all in all, this is an incredibly useless proposition as the only reason to run a mid over hub is ability to pedal, and ability to climb AND go fast depending on gear selection. You're doing 1 of these 3 things at most.

Yeah the battery is harder. The plug itself is very tight fitting but where the wires enter is exposed. Try silicone in the gaps. I thread mine into my battery bag through a small cut I made.

It depends a little on when you bought it. The more recently produced units have a firmware restriction to prevent people using 52 volts. If you have one of these units I believe you have to use a program cable to flash the firmware. There are a few threads on endless sphere that will cover the process. If it is an older unit it should just work. It's been a while since I used the stock bbshd controller though. I'll never use another stock bbshd controller to be upfront. They have numerous versions. I bricked mine with an eggrider display trying to use it. Bafang are not happy about people using anything other than 48 volts. If you got it from Luna or em3ev then you are likely fine to run 52 volts. If it was Ali Express or similar maybe not. I have no way of telling you what you have though sadly. It's not the low voltage cutoff you have to worry about it's an overvoltage message. Have a search for bbshd overvoltage on endless sphere forums. Lots of good info. I'm using an external controller these days and I'll never go back. Hope this helps! Cheers

Personally I haven't experienced the Bafang stock bbs controller to be a "pain in the ass" for my style of riding. During easy, non racing, relatively low speed average 29 km/h rides working as a bicycle Postman messenger 📪. It's fairly waterproof sealed out of the box. Programming with usb cable or eggrider display is not hard in my opinion. I like the experience and natural intuitive feeling of being able to control the ebike motor with your feet, handsfree wether your input is transferred through pas or even better through a torque sensor , very much.🚴 Also because this input system enables me to ride with my hands and arms free in an aero bar wich safes a lot of wind resistance and adds comfort on the wrists or pas allows me to carry letters and small packages in my hands in stead of constantly holding on tight to a throttle.. It's also gives good exercise and safes battery not being able to ride the bike like a scooter without pedalling along.🛵 Lunacycle mentioned that they believe the bafang bbshd controller of wich over the years the quality and quantity of mosfets have been improved is better than cyclones mid drive controller. Some people use the bbshd / bbs03b controller into their bbs02b +750 watt motors mid drive as an upgrade , with succes. Before my current Bafang bbs middrive on a hardtail mtb, I drove a max 2kw Crystalyte HS rear hub motor with xlyte max 30 amp sensorless pas enabled external controller on a full suspension mtb for four years. But that xlyte Chinese pas system was more slow than the bbs in reaction time of transfering sensored pedal (magnets) rotations into enabled or disabled electric hub motor assistance.

Nothing wrong with a different opinion. External controllers take more work for sure. I'm not sure where you got the idea that there is no PAS with the bac800. I use it all the time. In fact now the NXT display is on the bike I have true independant PAS and throttle. I cam even have 3 pas levels on the road and 9 for trails if I wished. There is also an EU mode in the works that locks out the bike to the legal limit and no throttle. The idea being you can ride your bike to the offroad area and then unlock with a PIN. PAS is my big area with the NXT and I am hoping the experience will be improved. User control over power ramping, decay, optimum cadance etc. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on the stock controller. If you are ok programming it and running with the eggrider thats great. I bricked mine simply by changing the amp settings! Thanks for the comment. Cheers

The parameters will likely be causing that especially if it was programmed for a different motor initially. But to answer your question. A brake cuttoff. Peddling backwards or stress like going up a hill will kill the 50 watts. It's very little. But 250 is a bit high. Was it ordered for the bbs02 or for the bbshd?

I think its brilliant. My bikes wont work with it as it stands tho. I use a derailleur on both and you need to have a straight run chain for regen with mid drive motors. If I had horizontal dropouts I could go single speed and achieve this. It's a future project tho for sure.

With the ASi bac800 the throttle scales with the peddle assist levels. So level one is 800 watts of throttle max and level 5 is full 2800 watts. On a 52 volt battery anyway. Stock bafang it is one level for the throttle. But it does override the peddle assist.

I use it at low speeds when passing people or in tight spaces. The throttle I have is not the greatest. I may upgrade to a domino one in the future.

I use thumb..its difficult at first, but now I can use it to tackle the most technical terrain with ease.

Эй, Артур, это через гугл-перевод, так что, надеюсь, это имеет смысл. Это зависит от протокола контроллера. Это невозможно с контроллерами ASI. Не уверен, что это сработает с другими. Great video, thanks. I will be ordering this motor soon. I have a Giant DS3 mnt bike, has a non conventional shape frame, so I need to install battery pack on a real bracket that bolts on to seat post. Can the pack be secured in the rear bracket?

I'd be looking at a custom battery rather than an off the shelf model. Anything is possible though. You could post a picture on the cyc owners group and I am sure people with similar frames will give you pointers as well.

There are only a few places doing this controller. Try Electron cycles or have a chat with people on the discord for other options. It can be hard to get pre-configured plug and play. I have lots of videos on the asi tho

Ok the bike is good build and everything optimised but that Fat Bike with Fat Tires is drinking a lot of battery power, if you are not off-road it's a waste of energy. Nice videos btw.

Electric Biker Thanks! Yeah the tires are not the best for efficiency. They are very stable though and I used to take the kids to their schools in a trailer so the stability was the main point. I will be switching to winter stuff soon tho!

Yeah I think you are right. It's often called the ultra. Andy Kirby has some good videos on it. Custom hall sensors. It's a beast. But you need a custom frame and mounting plate to use one.

Any idea why I would get a 30H ERROR when I power up the BAC800 for the first time?

I Googled 30h and it said it was a communication error. The only one I have ever got is e10 for overvoltage.

From what I read online it can be the speed sensor. Or the wiring harness. Its not going to be the controller if it's new. Have you tried all the connections? What display are you using?

@@HighVoltageKits I looked at this link and also another one on the same forum. One difference is I have the BAC800 and this forum is addressing the controller that Luna sells. Looking at the display manual it has 08-99 (Error Codes) Reserved Please contact the manufacturer for error definitions. I do have the Bafang display I can plug in to see what happens but not sure how that will work since I'm using the BAC800. I'll let you know. The speed sensor is plugged in as well as everything except the gear sensor on the lower end. (The red connection) there were only two and the speed sensor plug into one of them. I haven't actually installed the magnet on the spoke yet but that shouldn't make a difference. I was powering up so I could install the brake sensors properly, positioned correctly. I also sent a text to Alan at ERT, I'm going to take a picture of the display and send it to him now since I haven't heard from him yet.

Potentially. The sturmy archer 3 speed can reportedly handle up to 3kw.... Rohlhoff hubs are super nice but super expensive. So if money was no object I'd consider it. But not at very high power and not on a fatbike. The engineering and quality is German and of the highest quality.

Captain Codswallop so it could be a sturmy archer 3 speed on a fat bike - my surley troll can only handle an axle with up to 142 mm. The Rohloff is too expensive - sorry too say that as a german. By the way I was inspired from your videos to built up a surley troll with a bbshd. My bafang bbs hd wasnt lubed from the factory - not nice to see that. BAFANG THATS REALY BAD 🤑

Yeah I have heard they are not very generous with the lube. I'll be redoing mine in the spring. I may well try the steel gear then as well. The article I read on the sturmy was on electricbike.com I think. The surley is a great frame! Good choice.

I have heard good things about belt drive. Definitely quieter. Possibly longer lasting and easier to maintain. I have zero experience tho. Part of that is budget. The benefits I'd get from belt drive are not things I'm that fussed about. So I'd rather try new battery tech over say a belt drive kit. But belt drive stuff is good. Thanks for the comment.
