The Oscars are just as agenda based as Hugh is jokingly saying BAFTA is, which BAFTA isn't. The Oscars go with lifetime achievement, comeback narratives or people playing someone with a disability. BAFTA is very objective and has chosen plenty of, if not mostly, non British actors and actresses over British competition over the years. I only went to 1990 but that's 32 years. It happened this year with Austin Butler vs the highly acclaimed Bill Nighy, and even though Colin Farrell isn't UK, the Banshees of Inisherin is a UK production and won best British Film. Also, Cate Blanchett beat legend Emma Thompson, not only this year but in 2013. In 2021 Will Smith beat 3 British Actors and in 2020 Frances McDormand beat 3 British actresses, and another for 2017. 2019 Joaquin Phoenix beat 2 Brits, including Taron Egerton playing a global British legend in Elton John, and this is after they gave a non Brit Rami Malek the BAFTA for 2018 for playing a global British icon in Freddie Mercury, and that was vs a British actor too. 2016 Casey Affleck won over Andrew Garfield (Born in L.A. but raised in England) 2015 Emma Stone and Leandro DiCaprio both beat out a Brits. 2014 Julianne Moore won vs 2 Brits, including Felicity Jones. 2012 they didn't even nominate a British male actor and Emmanuelle Riva beat a Brit that same year. 2011 Jean Dujardin beat Gary Oldman and Meryl Streep won over a British actress. 2010 they didn't nominate a single British actress. 2008 Mickey Rourke won vs a Brit. 2007 Marion Cotillard won over 2 Brits, including icon Julie Christie. 2006 Forest Whitaker beat 3 Brits including Daniel Craig and legend Peter O'Toole. 2005 Reese Witherspoon beat 2 Brits and Philip Seymour Hoffman beat Ralph Feinnes, (who has lost 3 BAFTAs to non Brits) 2004 they didn't nominate a single British actor. 2003 Scarlett Johansson won over 2 Brits including Naomi Watts and they allowed Scarlet to occupy 2 slots of nominations and Bill Murray beat Jude Law. 2002 they didn't nominate a single British actress. 2001 Russell Crowe beat 3 British actors. 1999 Kevin Spacey beat 3 Brits. 1998 Roberto Benigni beat British legend Michael Caine and Cate Blanchett won over Emily Watson. 1996 Gefforey Rush was the only non Brit actor nominated and won. 1994 they didn't nominate a single British actress. 1993 Susan Sarandon best 2 Brits, including Emma Thompson,. 1992 Robert Downey Jr beat Daniel Day Lewis. 1991 Jodie Foster beat a Brit. 1990 Philippe Noiret beat Sean Connery. BAFTA matters. That's why Travolta made the trip, and this was before the ceremony preceeded the Oscars and to many Americans was an afterthought. Hugh was very deserving for 1994. Tom Hanks as Forest Gump hasn't aged well and Travolta was great in Pulp Fiction and I'd prefer him, but the film is about a lot of people.

It'd still be good to see a serious theatre company getting him to try one of the Shakespeare roles. It would kill his comedy attraction for a year, but not be seen by many people, and there really are a few stern, solid parts he could do. Leontes? Claudio? He might have it. J.

This reminds me that actors used to have character, respect, and modesty. Mentioning the excellence of the writers and directors, whilst trying hard to still be entertaining during an acceptance speech is a lost art. Todays youth and stars are *actuallly* smug (in contrast to Hugh's feigned self-depricating admission of smugness), and it's just borish and vapid. I never thought I would be the old man reminiscing for things "Auld Lang Syne", yet here I am, melancholy for lost times. It was brief, to the point, and notice how he didn't try to make a giant political statement or activist stance. What the west has lost in character as a society is immeasurable. I'm in consant tears.

BAFTA is far and beyond more objective for international actors and actress than Hugh realized. Since they combined the British and Foreign categories in 1968 non Brits have dominated while the Oscars have an agenda for lifetime achievement, comeback narrative and people playing someone with a disability. Just this year at BAFTA Austin Butler and Cate Blanchett both won, and Butler was against highly acclaimed British Bill Nighy, and even though Colin Farrell isn't UK, The Banshees of Inisherin was a UK production and had won best British Film. If BAFTA was viewed less than professionally impartial, Brendan Fraser wouldn't have made the trip for his nomination or Travolta in this clip. Including Butler, Blanchett and Will Smith last year who beat 3 Brits, at 45 of the entire 55 applicable ceremonies at least one non UK person won, and most were head to head against UK competition. 11 times they didn't even nominate a UK person in at least one of the lead acting categories, and twice they didn't do it for either one of the male or female groups, and that happened in consecutive years. BAFTA has also awarded non Brits over the likes of British legends Emma Thompson (3 times) Ralph Fiennes (3 times) Michael Caine, Lawrence Olivier, Sean Connery and Peter O'Toole

He wasnt kidding about the Brits being "loyal". They dont hand out their awards to foreigners like we do...I wouldn't care but two of their winners of Oscars werent even off the stage then they threw Americans some insults...Kate Blanchett and Helen Mirren. I think we should give away less and keep more right here at home like they do.
