She's been blind in her left eye for some time and has major eye problems. She once joked about not knowing where her costar Penelope (not in Downton Abbey) was when they were walking side by side because she could not see her; Penelope was walking right beside her the whole time. They had to change the script and switch which side they were walking on because Dame Maggie could not see her at all. It's amazing what she's accomplished the past 25+ years with these eye issues.
