‘Don’t give up. I got rejected from directing anything for about 10 years’ director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, Godzilla, Monsters) shares how he convinced execs to let him direct + how his early ambitions to join the Rebel Alliance inspired his career in filmmaking.

It's so interesting to note just how long it took such a talented man to find his feet in the industry.

it's also clear that he had to brush up his talents and software skills to reach the point where he was capable of making monsters. It may have been a very different film a few years earlier. experience of all sorts is still about learning and reaching a certain conjunction or alignment of contexts/situations. But you do make your own luck.

This man is my favorite director even though I watched 2 ( Godzilla, rogue one )of his movies and I’ve watched bunches of other directors ( Christopher Columbus, Ridley Scott, and Steven Spielberg) all the time

Why is a man like this, with so much talent, not being allowed to make more great films?

because he makes overtly leftist sci-fi. Same thing happened to the brilliant Neill Blomkamp

The boy from (near) Coventry in England that to coin an American phrase "whipped the asses" of some of those those Hollywood directors with his Rogue One film. I had lost all faith in film until I reluctantly came across Rogue One. What a ride. Brilliant story, authentic Star Wars, tightly delivered by this genius, Gareth Edwards. Initially I thought he was a Welshman. Easily England's answer to Peter Jackson and easily up there with the likes of Mr Spielberg and Ridley Scott. I do not live in Coventry but go there occasionally to an Arts group I belong to there. Phillip Larkin also hails from there. I know Coventry has a buzzing Arts scene. Go Coventry, go Gareth!!!! ps Would you agree that with make up Gareth Edwards could be changed into Oliver Reed, just as he did for Moff Tarkin and Leia in Rogue 1?

9:58 so in a nutshell: Gareth Edwards is not an "actor's director". Explains why Godzilla and Rouge One had flat characters. I love his visuals and action direction to death, but damn his characters have no soul.

Guy is one of the better of the genre filmmakers today. BUT ya don't need film school anymore...I mean look at Kane Parsons aka Kane Pixels..kid gotta feature film deal because of his Backrooms YT episodes. Not too shabby. Would love to see Gareth and Neil Blomkamp team up like Lucas and Spielberg.

Gareth Edwards has my deepest respect ! What ever the talk is about the film was a mess and it was saved by Tony! I would ask in "Whos eyes was it a mess ?" Which agenda did they have ? Woke KK stuff? I trust Edwards did a good movie, the better movie i am sure it would have been of what we got ! Still like Rogue One a lot. Thanks Gareth Edwards for a wonedrful and fantastic Star Wars Movie !

@UCIBON2b6Ysp-RlXMxZQQ_xQ You are totally right ! He is such a pro, had even the crew dress in star wars costumes just in case they would end up in the movie. Had models build for the shots. He clearly respects and loves Star Wars, you can feel that in every second of the movie. Seems he is black listed in Hollywood by KK after this. Sadly ! May the force be with you !

What the heck has he been up to these last two years? He's not listed as having worked on anything since Rouge One and he doesn't have social media to keep tabs on him.

great interview, remember watching monsters for the first time and being blown away. I'm always telling my design students to take more risks but there is an air of safe conservatism generally ( even amongst the ones who think they are radical) compared to a decade or two ago.
