I'm in my 60s now, but I have very fond memories of my 2 children watching this utterly enchanting programme. I love the air of warm nostalgia that it holds, just a simple thing of beauty - my daughter always joined in with "but Emily loved him". Not ashamed to admit to a small tear when I think back . ........

Postgate and Firmin deserve to be in the same hall of fame as Lewis Carroll, Kenneth Grahame and AA Milne. The story of Smallfilms demonstrates that you don't need big studios, huge budgets, fancy special effects, fast pace and noise to captivate kids and leave an indelible trace on their memory and imagination. Today's grandparents are sharing the magic with their children's children and reliving their own childhoods, when they were quietly engrossed.

Love, love, LOVE Bagpuss. Fabulous narration, characters and voices. Always makes me cry because it’s so nostalgic, innocent and beautiful. I have two big Bagpuss toys and several mice that sing. A few years ago there was an exhibition with all the characters in a Bradford museum, near me. Went to see it and was amazed at the sizes of them all! It will never grow old. Where are all these children’s programmes now and why do they not get repeated on mainstream TV? We need them all to be shown again and get children away from gadgets, gizmos and violence.

2:02 The most important, The most beautiful, the most magical, saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world. I was born in 1987, and spent my life watching these old classics. I was a terrible sleeper when young, and would often wake up at silly O'clock in the morning, and put on my old portable TV, that was in fact the size of a Sherman tank. This was a time when changing chanels meant deciding between BBC 1, 2, ITV or Channel 4. S4C if you were lucky and got a good signal. I'd turn on the tv, and flick to Channel 4, and there they'd all be, the old cartoons that were so wholesome, Ivor the Engine, The Klangers, Sesame Street, and Bagpuss. I don't know if it's from Bagpuss I learned to love my toys and stuffed animals growing up, but I have such an attachment to several things from my childhood this show always brought home the love one could have for a saggy old cloth cat. This was Toy Story decades before the idea would ever hit the screen, and it is a wonderful show from years gone by that can still be enjoyed today. Thanks to anyone who made it to the end of my nostalgic babble. ❤❤❤🤗

I was born in 2008 but my mum watched this when she was young so she thought I should try watching it. I became obsessed and carried a toy of bagpuss everywhere. I still have pictures of me holding the little toy at about 4 or 5...

I was blinded in 1984, I haven't seen this for more than 50 years, but I still remember every frame; how beautiful is Emily? I remember the sound Gabriel the Toad made; I remember all the moves Proff. Yaffle made coming down from his perch - if I believed in a god then I hope it's Oliver Postgate and his heavens are these scenarios.

I remember this from when I was a child. Every Saturday morning! I'm in my fifties now and, just a few months ago, bought a Bagpuss plush which now has pride of place on my sofa! :)

I like this, many modern shows are far too loud in music and dialogue being as engaging and dense as possible, this is quiet, watm, and comforting.

I watched this around 20 years ago, and it's bringing back memories of simpler times to me. I remembered it a few weeks ago and Googled it, never knew it dates back to the 70s! I can still remember seeing the white and pink stripy cat on TV around the late 90s/early 00s, makes me want to go back

1:42 the music from here to 1:56 just sounds so nostalgic mysterious and haunting in a strange kind of way as Emily’s saying the magic words It’s always stuck out in my mind with memories of the show.

when i was 4 or 5 my father showed this to me. i instantly fell in love with the show, i hate how people say, "how can emily's shop stay in buisness if it doesent sell anything?" or things like that, this is just the most amazing, wonderful, magical, cute show that used to be on tv. i miss it so much! to the poster of this video:thankyou :)

Its hard to describe what this meant to people of my generation to a younger generation spoon fed a diet of gaudy and profit driven shows full of shallow characters and even shallower storylines. Watching the shows my stepkids and my grand daughters watch just leaves me with a feeling of "oh gawd.." Then I watch this and my eyes are exploding with water. I guess it reminds me of sitting on the couch with my mum with her arm round me watching after school tv.

To be fair, a child of any generation can like a show from any generation in their own terms - I wasn't even part of the generation that this was created in, and I have fond childhood memories of it. I'm sure many children born after me, are still gaining fond memories of this, and continue to do so, along with fond memories of children's shows from all decades including recent ones. And also to be fair... most current children shows are really well done, they have decent to excellent storylines, and are clearly done with effort; I mean, they're not necessarily Shakespearian stories or anything, but neither were the best written shows we would have seen as kids (I was a child in the 90s, I have no idea if that's younger, the same, or older than you, but you get the idea) - there's shows that aren't as good, but the same thing happened in any generation (plus, it's all opinion anyway.)

I am reading Andrew Cotter’s Dog Days. As I live in the Antipodes, I was unfamiliar with Bagpuss. So, I went to KZbin and sure enough there was Bagpuss. As an over three score years and ten person, I would like to have known Bagpuss sooner, especially after reading the comments posted. One of my Realpusses can do a passingly good imitation of Bagpuss.

Just watching this brings back so many memories. I loved Bagpuss as a child and still do. I’ve got all the episodes on DVD and I’m not ashamed to say I’ve watched them even though I don’t have children. There is just something about a lot of these characters from different stories, Bagpuss, Paddington, Ivor the Engine etc, an innocence that’s lacking in TV aimed at children now. Bagpuss must have been showing repeats when I was a child in the 70s, but there’s something about the stories that seems enduring and new.

I agree with you about the innocence of this show. Kids today will have nostalgia about shows like 'Ben 10' and 'the amazing world of gumball' etc but this show just seems to OOZE nostalgia.. so much that even people who never saw it ad a child can feel it too..
