I'm in my 60s now, but I have very fond memories of my 2 children watching this utterly enchanting programme. I love the air of warm nostalgia that it holds, just a simple thing of beauty - my daughter always joined in with "but Emily loved him". Not ashamed to admit to a small tear when I think back . ........

Childhood memories are very powerful , so there is nothing unusual about getting emotional ❤. There is a scene in the French film Amelie , where a grown man discovers his childhood toy box , hidden for over 40 years . He also bursts into tears !

So nice to read the comments from people born after 2000 and watched it. Things were a lot slower back then in those times. This was children’s entertainment at its finest when it was first on tv. It’s one of those programs that stays with you forever when you were little. Happy times and nice memories of times long gone.

Ahh... my favourite, it's so utterly cosy and nostalgic, wish I could live in this world for awhile. It reminds me of the lovely old Ladybird books, with Illustrations that I wish I could climb right into. Kids TV was so much better back then and even some 80's stuff was excellent, like The Moondial, Wind In The Willows and Box Of Delights.

I could not agree more, some children's television programmes now are just absolutely terrible, badly written, badly acted, boring and annoying piles of dog excrement that frankly I would rather have my teeth pulled out with no anaesthetic.

Born in 1969, one of my earliest memories is watching Bagpuss and eating a fish finger sandwich at maybe 5yrs old.... such happy memories, and at the risk of sounding a proper old codger, they don't make kids programs like they used to..... much love and thanks for sharing, think it's time for a lie down now.... ;)

Hi Simon, I was also born in 1969, August in fact, and I'm so glad of it. My earliest memory is of watching Jon Pertwee in Doctor Who, January 1972, with my family in Wales. By the time Bagpuss came along in 1974 I was 5. You and I grew up in a fantastic decade Simon. Star wars in the cinema, On the buses films on TV, great music, sadly all gone now.

Love, love, LOVE Bagpuss. Fabulous narration, characters and voices. Always makes me cry because it’s so nostalgic, innocent and beautiful. I have two big Bagpuss toys and several mice that sing. A few years ago there was an exhibition with all the characters in a Bradford museum, near me. Went to see it and was amazed at the sizes of them all! It will never grow old. Where are all these children’s programmes now and why do they not get repeated on mainstream TV? We need them all to be shown again and get children away from gadgets, gizmos and violence.

Postgate and Firmin deserve to be in the same hall of fame as Lewis Carroll, Kenneth Grahame and AA Milne. The story of Smallfilms demonstrates that you don't need big studios, huge budgets, fancy special effects, fast pace and noise to captivate kids and leave an indelible trace on their memory and imagination. Today's grandparents are sharing the magic with their children's children and reliving their own childhoods, when they were quietly engrossed.

2:02 The most important, The most beautiful, the most magical, saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world. I was born in 1987, and spent my life watching these old classics. I was a terrible sleeper when young, and would often wake up at silly O'clock in the morning, and put on my old portable TV, that was in fact the size of a Sherman tank. This was a time when changing chanels meant deciding between BBC 1, 2, ITV or Channel 4. S4C if you were lucky and got a good signal. I'd turn on the tv, and flick to Channel 4, and there they'd all be, the old cartoons that were so wholesome, Ivor the Engine, The Klangers, Sesame Street, and Bagpuss. I don't know if it's from Bagpuss I learned to love my toys and stuffed animals growing up, but I have such an attachment to several things from my childhood this show always brought home the love one could have for a saggy old cloth cat. This was Toy Story decades before the idea would ever hit the screen, and it is a wonderful show from years gone by that can still be enjoyed today. Thanks to anyone who made it to the end of my nostalgic babble. ❤❤❤🤗

For anyone here who loves bagpuss there is a big ginger cat in my greek village that looks the spitting image of bagpuss. Its incredibly gentle and it sleeps on the doorstep of one of the villagers.Yesterday i saw it walking quietly past 2 kittens without bothering them at all despite its size. Its huge but gentle just like bagpuss!

My most favourite TV programme from when I was very little. Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin did wonderful things and I will always be extremely fond of their work. One of the most precious things is that I've been able to share them with my children, thanks to the BBC archives and DVD publishing. Thank you all :)

I was lucky enough to meet Peter Firmin in Canterbury a few years back. There was an exhibition of his and Oliver Postgate’s most famous creations and I just happened to wander in when no one else was there. I chatted to him for a while, and it gave me the chance to just say thanks. I’m sure he’d heard it many times, but Bagpuss, the Clangers, Ivor the Engine and friends brought much enjoyment to my early childhood, and still do. Imagine talking to the guy, surrounded by all these wonderful characters. Special. 😊

This brings me so much happiness but also so much sadness...both for the very same reason. My childhood memories. My child hood was far from charmed but Bagpuss brought me most of the innocent, magical joy I was missing as a child. I'm now 50 and I'd love to feel something even slightly similar again.

Just watching this brings back so many memories. I loved Bagpuss as a child and still do. I’ve got all the episodes on DVD and I’m not ashamed to say I’ve watched them even though I don’t have children. There is just something about a lot of these characters from different stories, Bagpuss, Paddington, Ivor the Engine etc, an innocence that’s lacking in TV aimed at children now. Bagpuss must have been showing repeats when I was a child in the 70s, but there’s something about the stories that seems enduring and new.

Its hard to describe what this meant to people of my generation to a younger generation spoon fed a diet of gaudy and profit driven shows full of shallow characters and even shallower storylines. Watching the shows my stepkids and my grand daughters watch just leaves me with a feeling of "oh gawd.." Then I watch this and my eyes are exploding with water. I guess it reminds me of sitting on the couch with my mum with her arm round me watching after school tv.

To be fair, a child of any generation can like a show from any generation in their own terms - I wasn't even part of the generation that this was created in, and I have fond childhood memories of it. I'm sure many children born after me, are still gaining fond memories of this, and continue to do so, along with fond memories of children's shows from all decades including recent ones. And also to be fair... most current children shows are really well done, they have decent to excellent storylines, and are clearly done with effort; I mean, they're not necessarily Shakespearian stories or anything, but neither were the best written shows we would have seen as kids (I was a child in the 90s, I have no idea if that's younger, the same, or older than you, but you get the idea) - there's shows that aren't as good, but the same thing happened in any generation (plus, it's all opinion anyway.)

I am reading Andrew Cotter’s Dog Days. As I live in the Antipodes, I was unfamiliar with Bagpuss. So, I went to KZbin and sure enough there was Bagpuss. As an over three score years and ten person, I would like to have known Bagpuss sooner, especially after reading the comments posted. One of my Realpusses can do a passingly good imitation of Bagpuss.
