Great Video Reg. I don’t think bags and boards should be replaced as often as you stated in the video. My collection had gone untouched in long boxes from 1993-2016. The books were bagged and boarded since they were originally purchased. I have since sent some of those books to CGC. 4 copies of ASM361 (unpressed) came back 2 at 9.8 and 2 at 9.6 all with white pages. The books were stored in a cool, dry closet. That’s the key - A proper storage area.

Michael P Sounds like you’re taking excellent care of you collection. You can absolutely go for longer periods when you provide excellent care of your collection. I’ve purchased numerous collections over the years and I can tell you that not everyone does that. I’ve seen yellow poly bags, sticky bags, backing boards with color transfer, pet hair and mold inside the bag-not properly sealed, etc. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

Hmmm.... This is pretty informative about BCW products, but as we all know there are tons of companies providing the same types of products many of which are better than the before mentioned company in my opinion. I think you should probably retitle this video as "BCW Bags and boards 101"... since no other products were mention and your assessment of how they rate with you; it is also obvious you have relationship with BCW based on your intro plug. Other than that this is a good video. Thanks again!

I personally love the clear backing boards for any book I want to display. that way I do not have to replace them and risk removing the book from the bag and board every few years ... and I can see the back cover just as a bonus. they are for sure heavier and more expensive so i do not use them on everything.

Great informative video as usual! I'm using mylight 2's with archival boards currently.. I was under the impression I would never have to replace the mylights as they should last the comics life... I'm assuming that's not the case... But if you store it properly in a cool dry place.. You really shouldn't have to change anything for like 10-20 years.

I'm blaming you Regie (just ignore the fact that I have been wanting to do this for awhile lol). After this video I ordered my 1st pack of mylar bags. The shops near me do not carry mylar so I had to order it. I tried typing in code words swole, sensodyne, tank tops, and AF15. Nothing happened. You might want to get with BCW and have them fix your key words so we can get a discount or signed photos from your bodybuilding days. Lol. How many boards do you personally use in a mylar bag? I have seen some people stick a couple boards in a mylar but I'm not sure I want to buy twice the boards I already buy
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
You are hilarious. I’m surprised that none of those codes work. Strange. Previously I used silver age sized bags for everything and I would use two backing boards to get the smaller (modern) books to fit securely. Part of the reason was the cost of the old bags. They were expensive! Since switching to Archivals I’ve been using age appropriate bags (e.g., modern Mylar for modern books). Novel concept. 😂 With this change, I didn’t feel the need to stick two or three boards into a bag to make it secure. One bag, one board, one comic. So far so good. I also prefer the 2mil Mylar versus the 4 mil. I felt like the 2 mil is more than enough for me. Everyone has a different setup but this is what I’m doing at present. Give the one board a try and see if it provides enough rigidity for you.

I’ve noticed when I store some current comics, around the top of the book it almost seems scrunched and is wavy.. is this because I need to get the “thick” book sleeves or is this normal? I don’t want to damage my books with waves in the long haul I want to keep them as fresh as possible. What’s the trick?!
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
Is this developing after you buy the books or before? I’m asking because sometimes the cheaper paper used by some publishers (eg., Marvel) is prone to ripples and waves. I see it sometimes in new books still on the shelf. 👎🏾 If this is “developing” after it could be the result of using a too small bag or exposure to moisture. I am also assuming you are storing normal size comics versus oversized books (like ASM 800 or Action Comics 1000).
@trooper7160
@trooper7160 5 жыл бұрын
Regie Simmons IFBB Pro I usually don’t notice it till they’re in the bag but now you mention it.. they are always just Marvel’s books that seem to do it. They could be like that on shelf too I just don’t notice.. I’ll pay more attention to that. I notice the waves begin right when they get in the bag so it can’t be the moisture. I want to say too small of bag but most books fit fine. But yes they are all normal size.. Going through them and looking though.. I’m almost leaning on the cheap paper part.. I’ve bought a couple different modern bags and stuff and nothing seems to do it. So my next question would be does this cause in damage in the long haul? :(
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
Trooper The moisture exposure could be happening while the books are en route to the LCS. Planes, trains and automobiles. 👎🏾👎🏾 I’m unsure of the long-term impact. The best piece of advice that I can give is to pick the best book from the stack at the shop. I tend to look at the front and back of each book before buying them. Several times I’ve switched out books from my pull list with another on the shelf. For those that you’ve already purchased, you can consider sending them to a presser. It will depend upon the cost of the presser and the value of the book.

On the 4 mm mylar & archival bags, do you have to change those out every three to five years? What is the shelf life on the higher-end bags and do they have higher-end longer life backing boards?
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
The recommendation from BCW is to change out the boards every 3-5 years. If you are taking great care of your collection you can go for longer periods of time. The boards are the same for all BCW bags (e.g. poly and Mylar). The bags protect the books from environmental dangers. If the bags are maintained you can use those for longer periods (beyond 3-5 years). Put another way, I’m not sure that the bags themselves have a shelf life unless they are ripped, exposed to moisturizer, etc. The backing boards have a recommended replacement period. Give consideration to the 2 mil Archivals. I found the 4 mil bags a little tough to work with. You also need a fair amount of tape to hold down a 4 mil thick flap. I had intended to show the various bags but the video was already super long. I may do an additional video where I can show the bags themselves. The problem is that some features are hard to “show / see” on camera.

Excellent information Regie, thanks much. Glad you covered mylar. I had absolutely no idea that BCW made mylar sleeves. I have only ever bought their resealable current/modern bags. My entire silver/bronze age collection (around 3k books) resides in E. Gerber's MyLites 2 with their full back acid free boards. I am very happy with these, but they are pricey. I will check out BCW archival sleeves for my next round however now that I know they exist. One question on this. Are the BCW mylar sleeves available in resealable? That would be so nice. I do not really enjoy purchasing and applying double-sided tape to seal my mylar sleeves. Thanks again for the good info!

To my knowledge the Archivals do not feature a resealable flap. It’s actually a great idea. BCW tends to read the comments so maybe they’ll see this suggestion. If not, I’ll try to flag it next time we speak. I’ve used BCW bags and supplies for such a long time it only made sense for me to transition to Archivals once I became aware of them. I have been using BCW boards and bags as well as the UltraPro bags for years. Now that I want to upgrade to Mylars I am not seeing BCW as competitive in pricing with E Gerber. The cheapest I can find on BCW site for 2 ml Mylars is 500 for $240 if you buy 10 packs of 50 for $24 ea. E Gerber has 1000 Mylars for for $186. Am I missing another option? @RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 3 жыл бұрын
By thick, you are asking about oversized comics like annuals, etc? Generally, your best bet is to go up a size. For example, an oversized modern annual may work best in a silver age sized Mylar. You may need extra backing boards to fill the gap (to stop the book from shifting). Put another way, there is no thick Mylar option.

Regie. What I liked about the previous video on this topic you and I discussed a few days ago was seeing your actual setup. I, like you, like uniformity. I’m going g to switch over to Mylar for my collection. Is there a Mylar bag and board set up that would work for a collection that is a mix of silver and modern books? Or do you recommend just having different sizes even though it looks terrible in you box?
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 3 жыл бұрын
It depends upon your setup. If you have moderns and silvers in the same box and want one size you should go with the silver age bag/board because the opposite would not work. If the moderns and silvers are kept in separate bins then you might want to consider age appropriate bags/boards. I say this because a modern book will “swim” inside a silver age bag and will require several backing boards to fill the space and even then the book may move.
@danielperkins9347
@danielperkins9347 3 жыл бұрын

Yup. And, that’s why it’s the old video. 😉 eGerber Mylar and backing boards are expensive and sometimes hard to find which is why I opted for a simple setup. With time I realize that the approach didn’t work for me...hence the newer video and change in direction. Hope this helps.
