In this episode, we compare some of the many similarities between Kurdish and Balochi, with Jalal and Çîya as the Kurdish speakers representing both the Sorani and Kurmanji dialects, and Abubakr and Rauf, as the Balochi speakers, comparing a list of words and sentences.

Kurdish and Balochi are both classified as Western Iranian languages within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It should be noted that the Kurdish language is divided into different dialects, and in this video both the Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji) and Central Kurdish (Sorani) dialects are represented.
Kurds and Balochis have had a long historical connection with one another and so have the languages. Balochi (بلۏچی‎) is more specifically classified as a Northwestern Iranian language and native to the Balochistan region, which is within Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. In addition to that, the Balochi language is spoken by a significant number of people in Oman, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, an parts of East Africa, as well as in diaspora communities around the world.
The Kurdish language is mainly divided into three groups. Northern Kurdish (Kurmanji) is the largest, spoken in Turkey, Syria, northern Iraq, and northwest and northeast Iran. Central Kurdish (Sorani) is primarily spoken in Iraqi Kurdistan and the Iranian Kurdistan Province. Southern Kurdish (Pehlewani) is for the most part spoken in Kermanshah and Ilam provinces of Iran and in the Khanaqin district of eastern Iraq.
Literary Kurdish works have been written extensively in Kurmanji and Sorani, as well Pehlewani, Zaza, and Gorani (Hawrami), with many famous poets, such as Mela Huseynê Bateyî, Malaye Jaziri (Nîşanî), Faqi Tayran (Feqiyê Teyran), Ahmad Khani (Ehmedê Xanî‎), and Mahmud Bayazidi who wrote in the Kurmancî dialect; Nalî (نالی‎), Haji Qadir Koyi (Hacî Qadirî Koyî), Sheikh Riza Talabani (شێخ ڕەزای تاڵەبانی), Mahwi (مەحوی) who wrote in the Sorani dialect.

Kurdish and Balochi have same roots. I read Kurdgalname, I would suggest Baloch brothers to read it. I am from Pakistan but I know little bit Kurdish. My friend was a Kurd, he used kurdish while talking while I used Balochi. After few weekz we were able to understand eachother's accent. We still do the same. I have seen some Baluchis that even have the name Kurd. Like Ali Ahmad Kurd from Pakistan for example. Same with Palestinians of Kurdish origins in Palestine, a lot of them have the name Kurd to this day. Mohammed El Kurd for ex. I wish all Middle Easterners and Asians can get along like the Europeans do instead of fighting each other over materialism and ideology. Biji Baluch u Kurd and all good people.

Greetings to my Baloch brothers, Kurds and Persians. I am from the area of Darvaz (Tajikistan), the dilect of our region (Darvazi) is considered the most archaic dialect of the entire Persian cluster, so much so that our dialect can almost be called a separate language.One feature of our dialect that I noticed is that we, like the Kurds pronounce v / w instead of sound b. For example, instead of xab, we say xaw (sleep), or for example, instead of ab (water), we use the word aw. And then by analogy bidar-vedar (awakened) lab - lav (lips), shab - shaw (night). I was very surprised when I learned that in Kurmanji the word "how" is chawa, because in our dialect "how" is chava. For example, in our dialect "I want to see how you do it" will be "Mna mewa binm tu ina chava kmi"

Fun fact: there is a Balochi tribe in Balochistan called "Kurd". I'm from that tribe, although we call ourselves Baloch but also acknowledge our Kurdish background and history.
@MessiMerdo
@MessiMerdo 3 жыл бұрын
I have heard of that, there is also a Badini tribe in Balochistan. And in fact there are also Zoroastrians in Kerman/Yazd who speak Zoroastrian "Dari" which is called Behdinani. This is interesting because of the fact that this Zoroastrian "Dari" is a Nortwest Iranic language. And Ba(h)dinan and Badini is the name of a former Kurdish prinicipality and a local dialect of Kurmanji Kurdish. This is no coincidence imo, especially since it is a Northwest Iranic language. I assume these Behdinani speakers from Kerman/Yazd had some roots in the Bahdinan region of Iraqi Kurdistan. It is believed that Badini derives from the Budii. One of the six main founding tribes of the Medes. And according to Heredotus related to the old Scythian Budini tribe from the Black Sea.

Balochi has some words which is more similar to my Dimli Kurdish. Dimli is also known as Zazaki on the Internet. But Zazaki is not really the term we use for our dialect. What the Internet calls Zazaki is 4 varieties of the same language and Zazaki is only one of them. There is Dimli, Kirmancki, Kirdki and Zazaki. In Dersim they don't call their language Zazaki. It is actually looked down on it a little bit. They call their regional dialect Kirmancki. In Diyarbakir we call our regional version Dimli or Kirdi. In Bingöl they call it Kirdki. Only in Elazig and Varto they use the term Zazaki.

It’s not “At some time in history, we were maybe, like, together!” It’s absolutely and definitely that Persian, Balochi, Kurdish and all other Iranic languages are all descended from a single proto-Iranic language which in its turn was a later development of the proto-indoeuropean language. It’s very plausible that 3000 years ago, all these populations spoke mutually intelligible dialects, if not the same language, which later became distinct languages like Kurdish, Balochi and Persian.

@@rtam7097 Mayrhofer is a specialist in Sanskrit. Naturally he will see more similarities to Indo_Aryan as he is mroe used to it, but even he admitted that all the examples he used are not necessary Indo-Aryan. Ironically some of the examples he used like Aika for one totally ignore the fact that this is not Indo_Aryan specific but also allot of Iranic languages as some Kurdish dialects and Persian dialects have preserved and use the k sound instead of the v. Like Persian "Yak" or Kurmanji "yek". hell there are Kurmanji dialects that still use "ek" or "eke". Those are not proves of Indo_Aryanism, but prove of lack of data and some might say lazyness or even confirmation bias. The Mitanni substrata being in fact archaic Iranic would also be in line historic accounts and explain the connection Greek, Assyrian and Persian sources draw between Mitanni, Matiene and Medes. Kurdish historians in fact argue that the Indo European or more precisely Indo_Iranian source in Mitanni dynasty were those Gutians. Who were pushed out from part of their homelands in Northern Mesopotamia into the Zagros mountains by the Assyrians. And there they merged reorganized and formed new dynasties such as Media to counter the Assyrians. In all of this the common denominator are the Gutians. Gutians are known throughout history to have been in conflict with Akkadian tribes from the Central and Lower Mesopotamian plains.

Hi, Bahador. I really enjoy your videos, esp the ones where you compare Iranian languages. However, with respect to Kurdish, I would very much appreciate it if you could include the Southern Kurdish dialects as well (e.g. Kermanshahi, etc) because so far you have only included Sorani and Kurmanji dialects.

Do the Tajiks in Uzbekistan also consider themselves Uzbek? Like many Kurd,Azeri,Baloch,Turkmen refer to themselves as Persian instead of Iranian even though they are not Persians. The same case with Tajik in Uzbekistan?

Hi, I am Tajik, but not from Uzbekistan, but I know that many Tajiks of Uzbekistan are transcribed into Uzbeks by their passports (the same policy that is in Turkey towards the Kurds), but they realize themselves as Tajiks, at home and on the street between themselves speak Tajik. It is known that in fact the majority of the population of Bukhara and Samarkand are Tajiks, they simply hide this, because if they say who they really are by nationality, then they may not be hired. In other countries, Tajiks of Uzbekistan openly talk about their nationality, but in Uzbekistan it is not customary to talk about it. In principle, the Pashtuns have the same policy towards the Tajiks of Khorasan (Afghanistan)

Kurds from Maku, Urmia, Xoy in Iranian Kurdistan are traditionally Kurmanji speakers and have close tribal ties to Kurmanji speakers around Barzan in Iraqi Kurdistan and Hakkari Kurds from Kurdistan of Turkey. In my dialect we say for cat "kittik", but pisik is also known. For dog we say either "sag or kucik" while Kucik is more used for smaller dogs. Sidenote: 7:56 the reason why we pronounce it as Dev/m has nothing to do with being mixed with Anatolians or Mesopotamia. Which is true but so are Balochis, and Persians are also mixed with Mesopotamians. The main reason for us pronouncing it as dev is because Kurmanji and Sorani tend to shift the original m loud to v/w, while Laki/Hawrami/Kirdki(Zazaki) preserve the m loud. While Persian uses the b sound. In fact in allot of cases Kurdish has preserved the archaic versions better than Persian. As example to name xwardin" which actually derives from the same root as "swallow" or "xwesh" which means "good, tasty". The "xw" version is closer to Avestan, Median or Old Persian, than the modern Persian "xosh" or even the Balochi "wash". Some Kurdish dialects like Hawrami/Kirdki/Leki have also lost the "x" sound and pronounce it like "wesh". The point is, this has nothing to do with influence of other cultures. It has much more to do with natural linguistic loudshifts, in which case the NW Iranic languages like Kurdish dialects or Balochi dialects have preserved more archaic features than modern Persian.
@dunkens9575

Actually the preservation of /xʷ/ is specific to certain accents or dialects. For example, it is more common to hear خۆش (xoš) in Central Kurdish accents instead of خوەش (xwaš) but this might be a recent borrowing from Erbil accent. There are accents which say خۆردن (xordin) instead of خواردن (xwārdin). Also, there are Persian accents in Afghanistan which preserve /xʷ/ to some degree.

I loved the sound of both languages and everybody's English accents, too :) Thanks for sharing your insights. I have a few words that I believe might be Sanskrit cognates. Mazan Mahan (great), Pors Prashna (question), Asp Ashwa, Draj/direj deergha (long); not dissimilar to the word for delay in Persian, deer.

Deer in Balochi means "far". Derghan in Balochi depending on the context, it either means "delay" or "old". the literal Balochi word for old is "kvan" "Ey derg-en aks ast'en" This is an old photo/sketch. You could also say "Ey kvan-en aks ast'en".
