I was really quite pleasently surprised at how good this little axe is. I was expecting it to be OK but with really poor edge retention. The edge retention really isn't particularly bad and the price is so cheap. I only bought it because I wanted to see if Wranglerstar was right and if Bahco's quality had dropped so much (and I still think it has dropped) But it's worth the 15 euros just for the experiment/video. When you think about what you can do with this axe and how much it costs and compare that with a Gransfors. I would however be prepared to pay a bit more just to have something made in Europe rather than China. Thanks for watching mate.

That colour would be handy. Not gonna lose it to easy in the snow. Sometimes cheap, isnt always the best. Given a seriously good work out. Good entry level gear. Awesome video brother. Lol Unni 🐕🐕🐕🐕😝🤘👏👏👏👏👏👏

I think actually the whole entry level axe thing is, well I think people should spend some money on their first axe. The cheap ones all come so dull and it is easier to learn to sharpen with something that is a lot less dull than this comes new. I think it's probably a good axe for someone who already has more axes than they are ever going to need🤣

Yes you get what you pay for,,,,or do you! Here in Canada highly sot after brand named axes is very expensive. If I was burning wood for home heat I would have a excellent chain saw and a gas / hydraulic log splitter. If I was building myself a nice log cabin I would have a good Broadaxe and hand saw and a sharp durable axe. But wait, if your a Bushcrafter you need to follow the trend and get a Gransfors Axe or a Hultafors axe or a Hults Bruk axe so that you can chop twigs for my twig stove and chop saplings for a shelter or split some 5" logs to make feather sticks for youtube. I've never owned an axe of high value in my life and I've been cutting, splitting and chopping down saplings before Bushcraft became Bushcraft! 90% of my axes are no name, but they are sharpened properly. Now yes cheap in cost can be associated with cheap materials, but not always. One has to look at their needs, what they are doing on a daily base. I think that an inexpensively made axe can perform most of the same Bushcraft duties as an expensively made brand name axe. If someone wants to dress and outfit themselves like a KZbin Bushcrafter, that's fine too. I say carry a sharpening puck and a file with you and you'll perform right along side the person with a Grandsfors axe. Just my opinion! And beside, if your cheap axe does finely fail on you, you can buy a few more! LOL Like you said, if it works and cuts it's good to use. Good review Tim. This comment was just to vent. hahahaha.
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
You make a lot of sense when you're venting Dan 🤣. Personally I like a lot of old axes, More because they are old than any other thing. Other people might like Gransfors because they are in fashion or whatever. The one big difference if you get a brand new expensive axe is that it will come sharp. Cheap or second hand ones come really dull but I can fix that so I don't care. Also I have come across some cheaper axes that are far too thick in the bit for my taste, but there are plenty to choose from. Thanks for watching Dan.

Hi. It's not a bad looking axe, nice head. Only I think you can sand the orange paint, it will change the look for good. I did that to a cheap one I've had. Reshaped the handle. Turned out very well. I actually used it more than my Hultafors Trekking Axe, because it was too nice to make it dirty. Can see you have winter already. Cheers my friend and keep warm 👍
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
The orange paint is actually probably a good idea making the axe more visible. It's still coming off though🤣. Paint off, forced patina and pine tar on the handle is what I am thinking. We have had quite a bit of snow already and was - 11 this morning. Starting to feel like winter. Thanks for watching mate.

@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
They don't make them like they used to. A good axe really is something that you can pass on to your grandchildren. The head at least. The new Bahco ones don't come close to the old Sandvik from what I can see. Still a very functional tool for a very low price. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I hope you are having a great weekend.

Chinese can be a problem for many people, myself included (usually). However, there are a few things worth having that are made "offshore" by well known and trusted companies. I feel discretion is the key, really. Great video. 👍🏻
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
It's so hard not to buy Chinese nowadays. Worth paying a bit extra in my opinion. They do produce some quality products though (and a lot of junk). They certainly can't be beaten on price. Taiwan comes close though and is a country that merits our support, in my opinion. Cold steel trail hawk 🤣🇹🇼👍

@@KuukkeliBushcraft Cold Steel folders are among my favourites because they're tough and affordable while not being made in China. The Finn wolf is a favourite for a wood working folder.

The Finn wolf is the only one I have, but if that is anything to go by then they are awesome. Actuality I do have one other Cold Steel folder , the Toastmaster but that one was made in the USA many years ago.

Hey Tim, yes Sandvik originally made their name making fishing hooks, hence the 'fish logo' stamped on the head. I tend to prefer Ash (coming from England) and it is widely used in Europe. With smaller axes species of wood are not really and issue because there is not the leverage on shorter hafts. Softer steel in a small axe is not a huge disadvantage as they don't take the beating of felling or splitting axes.
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
It has actually been taking quite a pounding with that meat. Just goes to show how soft some of the other cheap axes we have been using for the purpose are. Some of them are getting quite short in the bit now. I didn't know about the fishing hooks, I know it is a seriously old company. The axe however for the meat didn't have such a fine edge on it as I put on it after the at the farm stage of testing. I used ash for a couple of handles back in the UK, obviously I can only used birch here and have only actually made one axe handle. Don't often have time for that kind of thing here, besides our birch is pretty small.
@bundufundi2 жыл бұрын
Hey Tim, it looks like a good option for chopping through frozen meat, you wouldn't want an expensive axe for that job I wouldn't have thought! 😂 The Stihl version I have I think is made in Italy and did not cost much more but looks almost identical.
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
Yes I seem to remember seeing the Sthil one on one of your videos. We use really cheap nasty axes for cutting the meat and the guides get shouted at by me if they use anything else. I also thought it would be a good test of the axe. I was really surprised how well it did, expecially since I saw that it was made in China. Thanks for watching Trev.

I just bought a vintage “no name” French tomahawk for £38 including postage off eBay. It’s a beaut! I’ve wanted a tomahawk for ages, was going to get a cold steel one, but this is cheaper AND has that “je ne sais pas” 😁😂. It weighs 850 grams, so not a lightweight, some of the weight is in its extended poll, so it can safely be used to hammer things, which is good. I really like the fact that it is vintage and has been forged by some French blacksmith, not made in a big factory. Can’t wait to get a razor edge on it and take it out in the woods one evening soon.

Hiya mate! I saw you using this in your last vid' and thought it looked handy. It's got more or less the same profile as my Helko Werk pack axe that I love, on a short handle. Really handy to pop in a rucksack as an afterthought! Yes - I'd mod it too, get rid of the ghastly colour for a start off and keen it up a bit! What's the wedge made of btw and what does the head weigh? Cheers!
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
It's 1and a quarter pounds mate and the wedge is some kind of a plastic thing with a loop to hang it from. That had to go straight away. You don't really hear much about German axes, but only hear good things. Helko look really good, I get the impression that Germany is underrated when it comes to making axes. Thanks for watching Steve. Great to hear from you.

Thanks mate, it could also be that he got a dud axe or is it just far too used to using his Gransfors. Who knows, anyway it really did surprise me, I wasn't expecting it to be much good at that price. @KuukkeliBushcraft11 ай бұрын
Glad you liked the review. There are a lot of good options for a small camp axe, but I think this one is very hard to beat on value for money. But only if you are willing to put some time into putting a functional cutting edge onto it. If you want something that is good value but comes sharp enough to use, I would recommend the Fiskars X7. Thanks for watching mate.
@iscariotproject2 жыл бұрын
wow i didnt know bacho had been sold,fiskars also have pretty soft steel but its ok if you microbevel it or convex it,works just fine.
@KuukkeliBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
We have fiskars axes at the farm and I also have a couple of my own. The farm ones I put a convex edge on as the guides are rather less careful than I am. With mine I just keep them fairly flat. The Bahco is now slightly convex, it came pretty much round, you could have knocked a nail in with the cutting edge. It's definitely significantly softer than the old Sandviks but I still have to say I was fairly impressed with how well it held its edge. I thought it was going to be awful🤣
