Pro tip, get a pack of hickory smoked bacon, cut it into strips and put fresh cut garlic on the strips and fold up and put in a bag and keep in the fridge. You can catch all the gills you need with this bait
@SteveDouglastheCatfishDude Жыл бұрын
nice, how did you come about that recipe? interesting

@@SteveDouglastheCatfishDude my buddy's girlfriend told me she used to catch nice fish on bacon strips, so one day I tried some little bacon pieces on #6 aberdeen hooks and caught a bunch of bluegills, so the more I looked into it fish just like pork. The Uncle Josh Pork Rinds were hugely popular for bass fishing for example. And a lot of fish like garlic, so I just add fresh garlic to give it more scent. So far I've caught a bunch of gills on it, a crappie, a 15 inch lmb and a 25 inch channel cat on a tiny piece

@@SteveDouglastheCatfishDude there's a video of a guy catching really nice flounder on bacon and another video he catches 1.5 lb bluegill and several bass and crappie. It's a highly convenient bait, just try to keep it cool

I like a thill pro series slip float in the XL size, with a barrel swivel and a 15 to 18 inch leader with a 3/0 split shot right at the swivel and a BB split shot about 5 inches above a #6 aberdeen hook with a loop knot. I use this for rigging my crappie minnows too, I just bend the #6 hook into a #4 gap. You can rig Gulp Crickets on this and crush them when it's warmer

When using bluegill and other sunfish for bait I cut the entire dorsal fin off.
@SteveDouglastheCatfishDude Жыл бұрын
why is that Terry? So they swim more? less action ?
@terryjennings2356 Жыл бұрын
@Steve Douglas The fin has "spikes" that the fish uses to naturally protect itself from predators. These spikes are directly between the hook shank and hook point. By removing the fin, the bait fish can't fight away the target fish. Would you rather bite a porcupine or a opossum? The fin can also block the hook point.
@haroldsfishingadventures754 Жыл бұрын
@@terryjennings2356 just open their mouth and hook thru the nostril, they will usually bite the head first. When I fish gills for bass I use about a 4 inch gill so they can get it their mouth easier and hook thru the nostril. I fish mine under a Thill Big Fish slip float with a 1/2 oz egg sinker, when I see the bobber disappear I count 1, 2, and if its still down at 3 I set the hook. I use a Gamakatsu 1/0 trailer hook snelled, super sharp. If you can get some Black Salties try those as well, they're very durable and can last for weeks

@SteveDouglastheCatfishDude Жыл бұрын
it's not illegal here my friend, we can go plum up in the hydros if we want. Do a little research and you will find that the Tennesse river authority allows this. It's been like that for years. Obama tried to stop it at one time back in like 2013 and the ppl fought back, lobbyists were called, the governor and Mitch McConnel flew in and spoke about it and it got overturned. I was there in support of keeping them open to anglers. there are signs and warning horns
