Due to stress and getting closer to puberty. She is fighting a war between her instincts to do things her body is telling her she should be able to do versus her desire to be mindful and listen to Jamil. It's a very hard time for a macaque raised in a house to go through, especially a female. It can actually cause long lasting damage. Most macaques even out once they hit puberty, but it's something to be very careful about. Definitely not her being "cute" or something like that. Jamil has been through it with Shaki, and he's aware that some things he has to let that take their course.

What is Shakina’s new head going in circles about. Is she showing off or a dance move ❤
@leonavu10 ай бұрын
It is as far from a dance move as you could get, unfortunately, and it isn't something to laugh at. It is a sign of intense stress and, literally, a physical manifestation of a fight within herself. Shakina is at an age where many of her natural inclinations and instincts really start to kick in. Malaysian female macaques hit puberty anywhere between 3 and a half to 4 years old, give or take. That brings its own set of challenges, as Jamil has rightly stated before. But the time just before puberty can be tricky, too, with severe mood changes, maybe a little rougher attitude, biting a little harder, not quite so easy to get back under control. That's with any macaque, even in the best of situations. Then take Shakina who, even by Macaque standards, has a very high energy level. Since she isn't in the wild with a troop, and has no playmate her own age to match her energy and stamina, she can become distressed from time to time. It's very tricky to gauge things like this with macaques not living in the wild, but personally, I would recommend that Jamil put her on some kind of medication to relax her a little. Even something like gabapentin could help her immensely. But Jamil knows her moods and actions much more than we do; we only see a few minutes, maybe an hour here and there. He is with her 24/7, so I defer to him for a decision like that. However, because she has no large social circle, and especially no playmates her own age to help her release some of that energy, she's going to get frustrated. That frustration, plus the onset of more adult instincts, is going to smash directly into her desire to behave for Jamil and to follow his rules. When that happens, think of it as a war inside of Shakina's mind - she knows that if she pulls the chair closer she will get in trouble. However, these new, wilder instincts tell her that she should be able to get what she wants whenever she wants it. So your literally seeing Shakina's mind and body at war with itself. That's why she has recently started rolling her head, sometimes violently. She's trying to mind Jamil, but all of those hormones are making it almost impossible, and she ends up literally PHYSICALLY fighting with herself. It's definitely not a dance, or anything like that. It's, honestly, a tough time in a female macaque's life, especially one not in the wild. Shakina is incredibly smart, and she does her absolute best to control what she can. But saying no to some of these new instincts can be overwhelming and downright painful. So when you see her do that, be aware that she is really battling a very stressful moment as best she can. I hope she gets through it ok. Once she goes through puberty, things should even out, but again, this is a very unique situation, with only Jamil uniquely qualified to make the best decisions for the family.
