Congratulations on the great profit you made on your bakelite--you were really smart to lot up the stuff, man if you ever wanted to be a dealer full time you certainly have the eye.

I've tried, for many years to do it full time. I figure even if I hit every sale possible, and list every waking moment, even with progression, I would be looking at max $50-65K per year by myself. Just not enough for my standards. Thanks for watching.

you could get into working for auction houses, one of the best auction companies in the country, Bonham's, has an LA branch. The brother of someone I knew went through Sotheby's program (in London) and has since founded his own auction house and appears regularly on the Antiques Roadshow. In short, there are ways to get into the high end of selling fine antiques that pays 6 figures and up.

Yeah I want to some day work selling stuff. For me I think the ultimate deals are the multi-billion dollar ones made by banks. That's why I got into finance. You couldn't pay me to live in LA though, if you've never been there. The traffic alone will make you go insane.

Semichrome (chrome polish from an auto store) is the test I use and it never fails. Rub just a smidge of this pink cream on, rub it with a Q tip. If it turn yellow-ish brown, you've got it. Otherwise it will be dirty pink. Bakelite has no translucence. No offense, but I'd have to see the test results to believe that any of the stretch bracelets were real bakelite. You would make the best money if you showed test results in your sales pictures....just a thought.

Sugar you bracelets are great !! I will have to look back on ebay if they go for 30 dollars ??? I do know that with the bangles the larger the center opening the better the sale as a lot of women are not petite . I have bakelite collection as I have collected them over the years and the last one I sold on ebay " maybe 10 years ago went for over 200.00 dollars , it did have a inlaid design bit still just a black and white bangle ! Let me know when you list them and make sure with the bangles to include the inside diam. >> I know you already know to do this , you are a brilliant picker !!

Am I seeing this wrong or something? Ebay -> Advanced Search -> Sold Items "Bakelite bracelet" and I see dozens of bracelets pages of them for $20-40, I'm even seeing some of the exact same bracelets. Everyone keeps telling me they are more expensive than I think haha. Appreciate the kind words, thanks for watching.

It could be prices for Bakelite are down from what they were 10 years ago. Sometimes I believe so much Modern costume jewelry is being produced and sold nowadays, that the demand for vintage pieces is hurt. There will always be a market and value for vintage, but prices seem to fluctuate. So many modern designers have ripped off vintage designs....hence the increased difficulty in spotting authentic vintage. Younger people seem to prefer new, unfortunately.

Ultimately Bakelite is glorified plastic. There's almost no inherent value. It's virtually entirely dictated by what middle aged White women are willing to pay for it.

Love the fish carved bracelet! I think just that bracelet alone made the lot worth it!
@ThriftHunter
@ThriftHunter 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I really like that one too, I wish more of them were carved. And I wish the fish one was in just slightly better condition and it would be a real hit. Even so very rare to find in any condition. Thanks for watching

Do you think it's worth it for me to do it or leave it as is? I usually just leave things the way they are.

I personally, have heard Simichrome is perfect and preferable to clean bakelite. The only thing that ruins the value of bakelite are people who use the hot needle test and harsh abrasives. That is a big no no.

Lol James Franco. It's been raining nearly every weekend and the holidays. I have nothing to show right now. Working full time at my day job. I've issued all I know across my videos, now it's just show and tell. I'll find some more fun stuff in due time and when I do I'll be sure to share. Thanks

Now I grew up playing with my grandmothers tower of literally 50 bracelets I mean daily for hours just recently got into recollecting them. Found my 1st piece so far has tested positive and is bakelite. The only thing is I got really sick the night I did the hot water smell test. So I googled and things like asbestos were mentioned so now I'm a little afraid lol Have you found handling them or when any testing gives you headaches etc and do you feel and this is not judging but as sellers should we suggest people google and look up the dangers that may happen if bakelite breaks or chips?
@TheRealWitches
@TheRealWitches 4 жыл бұрын
Btw this is not a fascias or judgey comment it's a real question like I said I grew up playing with them as a child Alot lol and clanking them together lol Etc I want to believe that has nothing to do with being now 47 and having asthma and chrons disease and other health issues. But like I said after hot water smell testing I defentily had a reaction. So just morally I had no idea about the asbestos etc should we be educating while selling or just assuming ppl do know what they are buying?

People don’t like them because of their calm colors 🤣 It’s because it is first plastic made from synthetic components. Goober.
