It's not Tom's fault or any Doctors fault if you have bad writers or producers or directors. Tom Baker himself was always worth watching and gave a 110% no matter how great or bad the scripts were. Tom had the guts to to speak up when the scripts weren't up to par and was forced out because he just couldn't take it any more. That being said he had some damn fine episodes all the way to the end. Tom also had the best quality and most classic episodes according to fans and critics alike. I like and respect all the actors who have played the role but watching Tom Baker makes me feel like I am watching perfection personified in the role.

He was forced out because JNT couldn't tolerate (the feeling was mutual) him and wanted to take the show in a wholly different direction. Tom had done it for seven seasons and was up for some far more challenging rolls like his acting tour de force as the repressed priest in the original production of the life and loves of the she devil. Tom eventually returned to Dr. Who in the Big Finish audio productions, where its like no time has past. His many appearances on British news and talk shows are so funny that they should not be missed. We are blessed that many of them are on youtube..

tv time-wise sylvester mccoy had ten years technically straight. in-show chronologically peter capaldi did billions (even if it technically was kinda erased). in-body, matt smith might have been the longest in the same skin that actually aged for decades. with david tennant being his 3rd version coming back again over 17 years (incredibly) it's hard to include or exclude him. tom baker coming back as a curator, not the doc leaves him uncertain, but we can give it to him...until tennant inevitably comes back in 40 more years. 😉😁 tom might be back again....and then there's big finish...

While everyone has their personal faves, Tom Baker after more than 40 years remains the highest rated, the most loved, the #1 ranked story of all time “Pyramids of Mars” and he was chosen for the Day of The Doctor. He is the best. And the classic series is head and shoulders above the new. The new Who has much better special effects and budgets, but sets a low bar. It’s a shadow of the original series. 1001100-02

There are some stories in New Who that are pretty good, but I think that the Classic series had some really good writers and the Hinchcliffe era was one of the most popular due to the focus on horror which was wildly popular despite Mary Whitehouse's protestations.

My mother was around for Tom Baker's run, as in like... She was a kid... But when the Day of the Doctor aired, I saw an old guy with hair that was literally the color of clouds, and I was trying to work out who he was, and what significance the character played, while mom was practically thrashing the air with her arms, having a freak attack cos Tom Baker had returned for a cameo. Of course I got immediately when they first stated the new name of the painting (Gallifrey Falls OR No More, in the original timeline), so then mom was going "Holy shit! It's the fourth Doctor!" and I was like "Holy shit, they ACTUALLY made Cup-A-Gallifrey!" xD I must admit though, Tom Baker, while his cameo was short indeed, did provide a performance which will become iconic amongst the events in the rebooted series, alongside the end of the 11th Doctor's life, as well as the 10th Doctor's final moments and of course, the blink-and-you-miss-it regeneration into the 12th Doctor.
