@@maninanikittycat4238 To keep it short, the people that are trapped in Balan's world is due to the Lance character (get it balance), keeping people in their dreams and never moving on. Our two protagonists therefore need to help these people fulfill themselves while fulfilling themselves through the power of dance (that's why the other kid dances a lot). The book also has actual detailed reasons why these characters are trapped the way they are and, unlike this game, keeps an actually good flow for story. Which you'd think that if they put all their effort into adding text boxes in this game instead of the over 80 costumes that serve the same purpose, that would be one step to make it better

The worst part is Balan Wonderworld looks really good... Like... REALLY good and could have been a nice love letter to old sega games like Dream and fit perfectly with stuff like that. When I first saw the trailers I thought it was going to be like some epic platform carnival style game that would also play like dream while having a lot of call backs to other games from Sega like Sonic or Super Monkey Ball. They could have done so much with this and I think it might be the most disapointing game I've ever played in my life

The aftermath of this game is insane. According to Yuji Naka, the director of the game; he was booted from his position as director of the game 6 months from the game being released. Apparently the dev team didn't like him in the slightest. According to him, pretty much by everyone in the dev team wanted him out and apparently he had a spat with Naoto Ohshima (The dude who designed Sonic and worked as an artist and a producer for this game. In general I think this was supposed to act as some like band reunion thing or at least in marketing anyways because they haven't worked with each other since Sonic Adventure), and when he asked for more time to work on the game, Square said no and it might've been to genuinely just rush the game out for some reason. And if you haven't been keeping up with Yuji Naka, last I heard he's been arrested for like insider trading or something along those lines. From making this game to arrest and potential jail time. What a world.

Yuji was apparently the one to insist on bloating the game with the ridiculous amount of costumes. I definitely understand the dev teams frustrations if you knew you had to program something pointless into the game. Yuji also made the decision to put the story in a novel but I can't remember if it was Square Enix that asked him to add a story in the game or omit it. It was one or the other anyway haha

​​​@@ArtzyZeroI think it was Square the ones who requested a seemingly deep story, but not sure if they also asked for these many characters as well, like just the same there's too many powerups, there's also too many characters each with their own separate story that only served to keep the main characters from getting any development whatsoever for the sake of cramming all these lil stories, that also much the same as the powerups, they're all pretty meh, and some even make you question if they were even necessary at all, like the cat girl's story that ends effectively saying "nothing happened"

It's so sad that the game turned out as such a mess, I'm genuinely a big fan of the story and novel and it's clear they put alot of love into this game but something went horribly wrong in terms of gameplay and their way of presenting the story. Heck, the game starts half way into the novels story with no explanation. I genuinely hope someday they remake this game with actual good gameplay because it has so much wasted potential and it's sad seeing a story I love being known for the mess the game turned out to be. Tldr: please read the novel it's so much better and actually explains what's happening.

What i would do to make the game better: - Instead of mini-games about sports; the mini-game can help you to unlock abilities; super jump, strenght or more life. - Remove the Balan bouts because it's useless. - Put 40 costumes and let you unlock them by talking to a NPC, exploring or solving small puzzles. - Make the NPC alive and NOT just giants who dissapear for no reason; give them a few lines about their hobbies and families. - All buttons do something differents; one for jumping, one for attacking, one for returning to the menu etc. I won't change the music or the graphics, they are good 🙂

As somebody who absoloutely loves this game to the point I 100% steam. I consider this game to be a true hidden gem. While it has many...many flaws, I wont deny that. The game is far from pertect, but hell I still find this game to be real fun despite that. Not sure why I like this game, I just do and it's something I'm truly glad to have discovered it and played it. Glad to see Kwite suf- I mean have a very fun time with this game :)

This game is my favourite trainwreck tbh. Everything from the controls, the bizarre way the story's presented, the fact the music, character design and general aesthetic are pretty great, to the fucking God awful book which was meant to tell the story but instead tells something completely different and also reads like a 14 year old emo girl's first attempt at writing fanfiction, everything comes together into a beautiful, unabashed mess that I just love seeing people experience for the first time 😍

I am fascinated with this game. I think there's a great game buried under a mountain of bad decisions. For some reason Yuji Naka decided that the game needs to only use ONE BUTTON to make it so that anyone can play it, which hamstrings the entire game because each costume is a unitasker. Attackers often can't jump, etc. They apparently didn't have time to fit the lore into the game, so nothing makes any sense unless you read the novel they released afterward.

"Fun" fact: every button is the jump/action button because this was made to be a one button game. you need to have a costume/power-up that can jump on you at all times so you can actually jump when you want another "fun" fact: some costumes do things "whenever they feel like it"! i'm not making this up (example: box fox, it makes you turn into a box at random times and you CANNOT MOVE while being a box... you also need it for a balan statue)

I think, iirc, the reason why it turned out terrible was because the change in developers bc of the insider trading incident. The game also looks like sonic and NiGHTS into dreams and also early concept that could of been, but it should of been fine tuned with more play testing and more focus (the perspective really fucked me up tbh but I liked the desgins of the monsters and the ideas were cool, again just more focus and not just going everywhere willy nilly)

Yeah, Banal Blunderworld was fucking awful. What's worse is Square-Enix was pushing tgis game like nobody's business almost all year just because Yuji Naka did designs for it. While Neo The World Ends With You came out in the same year and they didn't even promote that game until SIX FUCKING MONTHS after it's release because they busy trying to get people to play this trash. I still don't forgive Square-Enix for this shit. They promoted this trash over a great game with a fanbase that'd been waiting for a sequel for over a decade.
