Only in Guilty Gear can a character exist in a state where they are "completely braindead overpowered" and also somehow still less powerful than Johnny.
@MrCowman574 жыл бұрын
He breaks the rules in a way that Johnny doesn’t in terms of his gameplay. Not saying Johnny isn’t incredibly powerful and definitely not saying he’s not the best but he still more or less follows the rules of traditional guilty gear character. Raven follows the design philosophy of the xrd specific character where they convert off of literally every hit and has really high loopable pressure after the knockdown. Again Johnny is the best though not arguing that but Johnny still has to spend a resource in his coins to get that conversion or still has to spend meter or one of his levels to convert off his long range normals. Still incredibly powerful though I wish he couldn’t get level three so easily.

@MrCowman573 жыл бұрын
@@no64256 absurdly good buttons with a lot of range. He can manually cancel almost any of his normals on block with mist cancels so he can link heavy with another heavy which can create a lot of different pressure. Most common being kick into heavy slash or even down slash into slash. A lot of these can be fd’d out of or you can jump if the Johnny is auto piloting , you can also 2d it if your venom, sol etc. but can be really oppressive if you let the Johnny rock. Landing coins makes his slash a laser beam that leads to a full combo off of almost anywhere on the screen and his cancels get better the more he levels up. And he just shits out a lot of damage.
@MrCowman573 жыл бұрын
@@sndjdjsndnxj I completely agree. I really wish he didn’t get access to lvl three extremely easily. But compared to a lot of the cast he’s just on the higher end of power in the game. Literally everyone has really degenerate stuff in one way or another it’s just how easy and quick some characters can get to it. I like gear because tier lists are in reality much closer together compared to games with more movement restrictions where people have less ways of dealing with powerful characters.

@@DragonflySwamp Dont worry if its not doable. Though in scope of the Xrd series as a whole, with Bafael's "Bad Balance" series as inspiration, there are plenty of Xrd characters to look at. Sin was always very strong, Elphelt always seems to be very oppressive in tournament play, and I know Ram was quite powerful in some versions. I think one interesting aspect to this video, and your insights, is how you highlighted players like Kazunoko who used Raven to sweep through tourneys. As GG is a much more creatively driven fighter then others, it might be neat to see how certain players made characters look much more stronger then they are. (Having been primarily interested in fighting games from a visual design perspective most of my life). I also really appreciate that you're open about Raven being a character who's "very close to your heart" ~ I've always connected with fighters emotionally, and the pedantic air I sometimes get from the FGC, which seems to stress "optimal" characters and functions at the expense of expression, can hurt my heart. After all, this is art that we're playing with here... And it's this synergy of right-brained visual expression meets left-brained logical calculation that is part of what makes the genre so special.

I could share one hell of a story involving showing someone new to fighting games this character and the absolute shitshow that became my circle of friends after that. He wasn't the best player in the group but nobody had fun fighting him at all, most of all myself as I was someone who didn't have their +R main and instead used their alt: Potemkin. Before things ended for the worst (for a while at least) I basically told my friends I wouldn't fight him until they made specific changes to him. Low and behold around my birthday (the date of this video upload) I ended up getting the exact changes I'd wanted to Raven to make my friend grow to actually play this game but at this point we were no longer on speaking terms. (For this and many other long drawn out reasons) I can't look at this character without thinking of how terrible my life was then and how empty a victory I'd received when he was finally patched for the better. I obviously like him more now even if I don't really play Xrd much anymore but that stigma still lingers.

I truly do believe this character and some of the xrd specific character last killed the game for a lot of people that were trying to get into the game. Sorry you had that experience with your acquaintance though.

@@MrCowman57 yeah the game being left in it's current state doesn't do it any favors. They quite unreasonably nerfed two other characters I was playing in the final patch. (Bedman, Answer) So I could only really have fun as either Slayer or Kum. The favoritism in Xrd is really strong and sadly the top 6 characters are not a playstyle I enjoy. My friend and I are talking again though as of recently. We had other problems to work out but Xrd really drove a wedge into it since we couldn't even have fun together. Thank the gods +R got a netcode revamp so I can play it with friends now instead of Xrd.

Just found this video after playing some Xrd with friends while waiting for strive. Did not realize Raven was this broken in previous versions. He feels like a character that should have a health resource for his Oki like Carmine in UNI or Mira in KI. Having dominating looping Oki on a character with strong resourceless mix and neutral seems very difficult to balance. Ky has his lockdown too but his mix is worse and he has to play "honest" to get there. Early version Raven very much feels like getting in once is enugh to get oki coinflipped to death. Btw. love this style of analysis. Like some other comments already said, this matthewmatosis style full breakdown is rare in fighting games. Going in depth like this is very interesting and appreciated. I would suggest throwing some of your own ideas at the wall on how to fix or balance the problems presented to fuel discussion. Could be interesting to see the different takes people have on it.

I actually liked braindead Raven; there's something to be said for having a character whose gameplan "just works." Compared the other ASW game I'd played that introduced a super-problematic character (BBCP 1.0 Kokonoe), Raven was someone I was comfortable having in the game whether I was playing him or not. My personal feelings aside though, the changes were for the best. People despised the character and I couldn't play him when introducing the game to new players without completely sandbagging his entire playstyle or driving them off (I usually just rolled Ky or Leo in those situations).

I remember I learned that Raven could grab out of his glide when watching a tournament set, so it definitely happened. I found an example of it, but I'm certain the example I saw initially was a different tournament set, I think during pools of Evo, and it was definitely Kazunoko. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bmbZqKWlgt2UeLM

Good job on this video! Can I suggest Potemkin next? Im a new pot player and Im not entirely sure what makes him better in AC compared to xrd.
@DragonflySwamp4 жыл бұрын
That's pretty simple: - 2D isn't special cancellable - 6K is no longer a fast overhead option - no Judge Gauntlet means he can only use his backdash as a reversal - j.S no longer spikes for landing and rejumping in combos - Heat Knuckle knocks away instead of dropping the opponent at your feet - generally lower damage output in Xrd That's for +R, anyway. AC Potemkin had Slide Head unblockables that he could combo off of use to generate a tonne of meter to spend on another unblockable. He was truly stupid in vanilla AC.

This is pretty cool, would you consider doing more balance history videos in the future?
@DragonflySwamp3 жыл бұрын
Balance history is a very time-consuming and difficult thing to research and produce, so I likely won't. But I do have some other ideas for analyzing particular characters and system mechanics in Xrd.

Arc sys does crazy things sometimes but I can't complain. Fighters is a sick game.

Y'know sometimes I feel like I wish I got into Xrd earlier. Seeing this makes me feel like I dodged a bullet, lol. Great video, I'd definitely watch another if you made one.

All fighting games have some kind of jank. For every story of Raven (released OP > hammered into shape) there's a character like Johnny (released broken > hammered into normalcy > got a weird change in the final patch that made him broken again). Xrd's still a really cool game no matter who you play or when you start playing it. Thanks for the kind words. I have plans for future videos that should have turnaround times of less than three months.

@@DragonflySwamp Yeah of course, I've definitely played enough Johnnys to understand what it's like. Strong characters are not one to turn me away from a game like Xrd luckily. Looking forward to those future vids, have a good one!
