Balatro Deserves the Game of the Year Nomination

I'll go to bat for this game any day of the week, any month of the year.

Put 100+ hours into Balatro. It's true that for a game that is this good and only be developed by one person is an astonishing achievement. It's rock solid, it's creative, dynamic and inspiring to other independent devs. However, GOTY is more than hours put in or sales, it's about evoking emotion and catharthis usually through narrative. Balatro is an excellent game, but it doesn't leave any lingering emotions behind, only thoughts of how to improve my next run with anticipation, which is more than what most games can jope to achieve. But for me, it's just not quite GOTY status.

I remember the discourse on this game for the first few months it was out. I picked it up as soon as I saw it was a GOTY nom. Honestly, I'll admit I'm having a ton of fun with Balatro. I just still have not seen the gotyness from it. This is only 10 hous in to be clear, but I really don't get it.

And you may not get it. The reality is, we're all different, and we all have different ideas for what a GOTY should be. I'm just glad you gave it a shot and are having fun so far. That's what's important at the end of the day.
