And that's how SMART gardeners fit 20 plants into a single 1 foot square of floor space! Excellent idea and presentation. Anyone can do this now that you've shown them how. If that's Chinese Cabbage you're growing, you get BONUS points. Collect and germinates the seeds and you'll never be without access to greens. The leaf is like lettuce and the stalk is like celery. It's a versatile veg and highly nutritious too.

Good job but what abt spraying the leaves w fertilizer, is that considered safe to consume?
@tersta1 Жыл бұрын
@@deirdrielizzmore9714 I'd fertilize from the top with a liquid fertilizer. Prepping the soil before planting is the best option. These greens aren't heavy feeders and they can be ready to eat in a month, so you really don't need to fertilize them after you've prepped the soil with nutrients. Otherwise, foliar feeding can scorch the leaves. Also remember that the fertilizer is incorporated into the plants that are eaten. So you are consuming them. And everything that's in the fertilizer is also in our bodies already, because we eat the plants. I recommend washing veg 3 times, no matter what, just because all sorts of bugs crawl on them, air brings in airborne viruses and germs, smog chemicals, etc. A good cleaning will get the fertilizer residue off and anything else on them. Pesticides and herbicides, found on store-bought veg, are a bigger problem than any veg that's homegrown. That's the main reason I grow my own. I want affordable organic, nutrient-dense food and the only place I can get that is my own garden.

@daphneraven6745 Жыл бұрын
@@micstica : Well, I think the point is you can use whatever you have. This may have been an old bottle that was beyond reuse, and in some areas you can’t recycle a plastic bottle that’s above a certain size. In my area, that certain size has to be 10 L. And cattle panels are common things in rural places. In your neck of the woods, you could choose to use a bucket or an old basin with a hole in it instead of cutting up a plastic bucket. Perhaps you have an old tomato cage that you haven’t used in some time that you could personally re-purpose, but that would give you a slightly different shape. Chances are, most of us have something on hand that would substitute without you having to go out and spend money. Even if it took a little extra work to put together.

В итоге, горизонтально можно разместить столько же растений на такой же рабочей площади. Пекинскую капусту на лист я сажу 10*10см, этого расстояния достаточно.

@3dandyrandy32 жыл бұрын
No this application with a self-watering at the bottom you really need the plastic so the water dissipates out the top to pull the water up to the top and it doesn't dissipate out through the sides this would starve the plants at the top.

Not at all! Burlap is very often treated with chemicals like copper sulfate, detergents, flame retardants, fungicides and pesticides. (Just smell them). I believe the burlap would leech very quickly into the soil. The plastic too would have chems, but slower to leech off (I believe, but not a scientist here). The burlap would also dry out quickly in the sun and wind. I get what you’re saying, but there must be some alternative. This is a really very cool idea tho! We might need these types of compact veg growing ideas in the near future. Bill Gates and others are buying up thousands of acres of farm land. Ya think they are doing so for the common good! NOT. Cheers to ya!

I have tried self watering wicks- I used cotton tshirts. They rot. So try nylon rope or polyester fabric.
@deborahhanna91262 жыл бұрын
Since old cotton tshirts or blue jeans are cheap and plentiful- maybe try twisting or winding them like the ropes? They will still degrade but i like that better than pieces of nylon.
@johnseiler86142 жыл бұрын
@@deborahhanna9126 what is bad about nylon?
@deborahhanna91262 жыл бұрын
Depending on the nylon it still breaks down. Pantyhose is just pretty much a loss cuz they don't really break down ENOUGH to be part of soil. Just a nasty moldy bits & pieces mess that lasts seasons after you think you got the last of it and strangles the roots of new plants. They work as hangers- sort of- if you want to drop a small planter down inside to keep birds away from seedlings but still let rainwater in. Until they get a runner! I don't know how well nylon rope would actually wick water but eventually it would get tiny little splinter sized pieces of annoyance flaking off. (Used it for the clothes drying line for several seasons.) Everyone has old cotton tshirts or jeans. Jeans legs are good to have hanging tomato from (the upside down kind but really both ends) and still use the rest of the material. Cut long strips of the tshirt. Tie the ends of three and braid it tight. (They last longer braided.) Make as many as you need. Cotton tshirt and blue jean take a while but eventually break all the way down to soil. Especially with vermicomposting. Polyester NEEDS to be buried- like all remnants of the 1970's 🤣- but again not sure of its wicking qualities. Plus the vegetables might start disco dancing.
@deborahhanna91262 жыл бұрын
Ps. Sorry, its already long but i forgot: when you cut across the seat of the jeans make 2-3 inch wide strips. Then you don't have to braid the strips but 'Twist' the entire length as tight as you can or roll it. I think that's everything.

A guard on the grinder is a good idea, especially for resting it if you need to etc. More important is to wear ear muffs or plugs, and safety goggles. Sometimes gloves. Knowing the dangers and proper usage for a tool is obviously necessary. If you wanted to do this project but not use plastic you could use 5 gallon/20 litre metal tins, with an old thermos flask for the bottle and funnel and a larger pipe or reduction fittings etc. You could fit a tap if drainage was ever needed. There's potential for expanding the idea.

@@heide6138 Also if cutting plastic drums, it's better to use a jigsaw. Much safer, more efficient. It makes larger particles you can sweep up, rather than grinder dust or molten plastic fumes and gunk. I usually mark a line to keep the cut level. Alternatively, just use a 5 gallon/20 litre plastic bucket which won't need cutting. Drill some drainage holes further up so as to hold moisture at the base. Hopefully some upward wicking might occur. I do enjoy scrounging materials for projects like this.
