Some of the migrants from Northern China thousands of years ago ended up in Peru living in isolated tribes with very little mixing with other ethic groups. That's how they maintained their more pronounced Asian features to this day. After a very long time, mixing of genes will lessen these features.

The Portuguese brought many then as slaves, along with other Asian groups they purchased to work on their colonial possessions. There were later waves of immigration as you said. There was a hiccup during WW2 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the US had the Peruvian authorities gather them up and deport them to internment camps in the US. Then, there were the Chinese contract workers starting in the 1900's and other waves of immigration.

The Matsiguenka being something of an isolated tribe, probably has closer genetic ancestry to the first hunter-gatherers who came to the land from Asia 12,000+ years ago than the less isolated populations in Peru. The isolation has allowed their genetic features to remain as other populations interbred more widely with people of greater ethnic diversity. This is also why Native Americans in North America have Asian like features. Some cultures migrated across the land bridge of the Bering Strait, spreading south through North America. Others traveled by boat to South America and spread north from there. You're basically looking at a snapshot of humanities neolithic past when you see these people.

When I visited Lima, I was really struck by the large and colorful Chinatown district. Fantastic restaurants called "chifas". Some Peruvian cuisine is Chinese influenced. Also many Japanese people- former President Fujimori is Japanese-Peruvian. Peru must have offered incentives to Asians for immigration, build up its agriculture, railways, mining, etc. Enjoyed your tour very much!.

The hammock for the Venezuelan chamo (young man, guy) was surely a sign of help and hope for a people who have been forced to emigrate after 19/20? years of hardship since Chavez took power. I was fortunate to spend time in Sarawak( Borneo) in the early sixties, lived in Long houses etc etc, long before the curse of the modern World got them. Living in the Jungle with the Ibans and Dyaks was the best times of my life, ( I am in my eightieth year). Watching them hunt with Blowpipes, seeing the shrunken heads hanging up, the sights the sounds the smells, it was magic. Great to see Mr Bald doing so much and travelling with the real people, plus his compassion for the less fortunate. I really admire this man.

I'm 25, and lived with a Bidayuh friend - also in Sarawak - and they still hunted with blowpipes, only the ones with jobs in the city had any technology, and they still had the shrunken heads in most villages we visited. I lived there for just shy of 2 months. The people there really are amazing, and so incredibly friendly.

The Chinese looks are more about the origin of the first Americans that crossed into the continent during the last ice age from Asia to the American continent. The entirety of the continent was originally populated by 8 families alone. It was amazing to hear the contemporary history rundown of a particular tribe by the Peruvian guy. It's safe to assume these tribes are very much reminiscent to the population before the arrival of the Spanish... Chinese heritage is more easily found in the large cities and it's very strong.

When I was in Peru I was amazed at how similar the Quechua were to the Japanese, even in their culture and language. I think Peruvians are originated in a migration that crossed the Pacific in rafts from Asia. The indigenous who crossed the Bering Strait settled in North and Central America, and there was also a migration from northern Europe to North America and other unknown to the south, that story that there were only eight families is not accurate. There were several migrations in different periods, ending with the Spanish that although it does not leave mixed so much in Peru if it did in other places like Colombia.

Regarding the appearance of the people in the amazon. Another reason many of them look central or east Asian-ish is because of their indigenous ancestry most of them are 100% native although some are mixed with other ancestries. Hope this was helpful !

Really love the random acts of kindness in this. Getting that guy a hammock, giving that old lady some money. They're little things in the grand scheme of things, but they have a big impact on the people you help. I fully believe in the butterfly effect in that regard. The guy you got a hammock for the voyage probably would have been much more exhausted and stressed with it. Which might have had all kinds of negative effects down the line. The places bald visits are interesting and amazing but for me it's the people that I enjoy learning about most. A lot of sadness for the poverty especially the elderly and children. I feel very humble thinking about their hard lives. And their smiles generosity and how they face adversity often brings me to tears. He really has opened the world to me. Love his work.

As someone who is Indigenous (I'm Cherokee) but who has Swedish ancestors as well, I often get mistaken for Chinese or someone who is part Chinese, so I found the first half of this video quite interesting (and not actually offensive, I get it that he's not used to a lot of Native Americans, especially bearded ones). I really love exploring the world vicariously through this channel!

Chinese features are common between the tribes that came throughout the Bering strait, just like the Canadian Inuits; others look a lot more like a mix between the polinesian, Indonesian and Australian indigenous peoples, this is because these people migrated as well but by the Pacific sea on boats all the way down into Chile's Easter Islands and up into the Andean mountains . Here in Colombia we have Chinese looking indigenous people like the Emberá Katíos around coastal areas and jungles, and others that don't resemble like Asians at all up in the mountains like the Kogui or the descendants of the now disappeared Muisca confederation/Chibcha indigenous people.

I dont know why i was moved to tears with this episode. Bald is living my dream. I so badly want to visit Peru (i have a lot of Peruvian friends and know they are great people), and no matter where i go I want to meet the real local people. With my experience, i know that there is so much happiness and content in small villages (of course also a lot of hardship). I love how he lets the culture and the people do the talking (and spread happiness and love to people in these areas). Amazing content and love all the videos, cant wait to see what you reveal to us from Venezuela. Hope you will visit my country Sri Lanka and show the un-touristy difficult parts of Sri Lanka if you do come. Of course i doubt it will be as interesting as these videos.
