HORUS HERESY ERA TACTICAL SQUADS
My new favourite unit! Yet, despite the similarities, it is NOT the same as a 41st Millennium Chapter Tactical squad. But why are they so different and what am I blathering on about?

Great video Baldermort. Could you see if you could make a video about Angron, or at least his earlier years if possible? I just think that Angron's such a tragic character, as he was seeming one of the most human of the primarchs before those damnable nails were put into and until the writers just made the Emperor a complete Ahole to him. And I know, Emps isn't a saint by any means, but to just treat one of his primarchs in such a way is mind bogglingly stupid. But I digress. I would just love to see and hear your thought on this most tragic of primarchs.

Massed Marines are undeniably effective. The problem is mass producing marines like that is you end up with the heresy. 40k marines are more a work of art that mass produced and they are far more selective about who they recruit.

Not even the Tyranids are as frightening as some of the 30k xenos like the Rangda or the Hrud. Lord have mercy the Hrud. There's a short story about Aeonid Thiel presenting Guillimane with the practicals he recorded on his armor during the fighting on calth and the subsequent underground guerilla war once the surface atmosphere was flensed by the solar flares after Erebus enfused the sun with chaos magick. It was Thiel who came up with the idea of the modern 40k tactical squad proposing a more flexible unit that possessed the strengths of a tactical squad and its support squads within one. A lot of those practicals went into the foundation of what would later be called the Codex Astartes. God I love the Horus Heresy.

What's not to love you get 20 bolter brothers by default and they are extremely customisable for your legion of choice. But good luck in trying to get some MK 3 and MK4 squads they are selling ridiculously quickly.

The Tactical Squads are the most basic unit within the Space Marines Legion and without them the formation of their fighting potential will never conquer the Galaxy. Tactical Squads are the tip of the spear of any Legion, and every one of the Primarch knew that without them the formation of their legions could never be as successful as they were. The Emperor knew that Space Marines need to work together to become the elite fighting force compared to the Thunder Warriors so he created them into the formation of the Tactical Squads to effectively use all of their gifts to the greatest effect against the enemies of mankind.

My absolute favourite unit as well. All of my Fists of Ferrus (Iron Hands successors) in 40k are in 10 man squads with spec/heavy weapon, and sgts have either chainsword and bolter or power fist and pistol or bolter. My 30k Iron Hands are getting started now, and those are going to have 20 man tactical squads, and sgts with power fists and bolters.

I love the Horus Heresy and its scale. The sheer volume of it all, focused yes but so big. The scale to the point where a group like the Salamanders, in 40k the fall or turn of a single Salamander is a rare unthinkable thing, there so few and so beloved of humanity. In 30k though, thousands turned, for a multitude of reasons, many from grief at the apparent loss of the primarch, some conflicting ideologies. On that same note, forces of Night Lords, seen as such twisted cruel warriors, showed up full companies still loyal to the Imperium. Such was the scale that even though the grater whole of these groups are what often comes to mind, there were thousands, tens of thousands of exceptions to 40k view point.

Listening to it now on Audible Its almost heartbreaking, the chapters where Horus is joking and clowning around with his Captains. Abbadon has Axxerman in a headlock while Gavriel Lokhan punches him in the sides, The Warmaster is smiling and laighing while cracking jokes. But we all know how it ends The Dark Warmaster The Despoiler But it added a lot of humanity to these characters that we see today.

@@baldermort Thats a good point, with the exception of some hearsay from A few of his brothers...Valdor and the first 2 HH books, there isnt much about Horus. Yeah, didnt thibk about it that way. However, i would love The Black Library to do some Pre heresy stuff. I found Horus Rising etc were unbelievably sad and tragic, not because they were written in such a fashion, but because Horus was a good man and you KNOW exactly what he turns into Hope all is well brother

Great video and spot on insides! The Legions was armies on a truly ridiculous scale at the end of the Crusade. Ironically as we have so many novels and stories highlighting just what a mighty and able force a single chapter is, we can perhaps imagine the apocalyptic strength of a force at least 100 times stronger, unified and much better supplied!

Lovely stuff Baldy. The sheer scale of 30K, the nightmarish fratricide and apocalyptic devastation is so familiar yet alien to the counterparts of 40K, and I very much look forward to more, particularly the oft overlooked Despoiler Squad, every bit as much the backbone of the Legions as their bolter armed Tactical brethren, but gested towards taking the fight to the enemy, without the fancy jump packs of the Assault Squads, but making up for that lack of speed with more honed and disciplined tactics.

As of writing this message I'm at 8:34 in the video. While seeing the death guard space marines as well as hearing there going to be part of the spear tip. I think that for me the biggest difference between the 30k and 40k settings is the newness of it, if that makes sense. By time the 40k setting comes in both sides are weary and bitter unlike anything you see in the HH. heck even the first captain of the IW Got so tired of the fighting he essentially let him self be killed. The Tactical Squads are great and flexible formations that form the backbone of the forces. Able to adapt to almost any battlefield and provide support fire, assault, breach, and whatever other scenario is needed. Also anyone who says they just stand and shoot in a line doesn't know the lore of the Horus Heresy and the books that show the opposite of this. The Solar Auxiliary could not keep up and they where equipped equal to Tempestuous Scions of the 40K universe. I love my Sanguinary Guard and Terminators for sure but I have never had a force of Astartes lacking Tactical Squads.

Sounds like a grizzled old platoon sergeant we had. You'd run 3 miles in 20 minutes, he'd rip you a new one for not doing it in 18. You'd shoot a 95% qualification, he'd be pissed it wasn't 100. We also never lost a single man under his leadership.

This is why this part of the codex astartes just boggles my mind. 1000, no give me 10000 marines! so I can eviscerate a part of a galaxy with large formations filled with a simple yet affective 20 man formation. Ripping and tearing through nids, orks, traitors, and demons alike and feeling like they're making an *offensive* difference for the imperium. Being eccentric to really take the fight to the enemy. I can see why Russ and Dorn were so apprensive in breaking up their legions. It feels good on the strategic and logistic level to tale the fight to the enemy like the legio astartes did.

Ai the tactical squad is a fine unit but it will never fill 1st position in my favorite Horus heresy troops that goes to the Blackshields reaver squad but alas the BlackShields have seemed to have slipped into the cracks of the new edition not even to have been mentioned

For years I was waiting the Horus Heresy to be easier of access, and my Iron Warriors too, and now it is our time to inflict some Iron Within in our loyalist foes and conquer our part of the Galaxy as *my* Iron Empire ^^ Thanks for this amazing first video dear Baldemort, it was great! I would strongly recommend a video about the many foes the Legiones Astartes destroyed, for they were mighty and incredibly interesting, and the Forge World campaign books were full of them ^^

I love the idea of the scale of the Great Crusade, but I can't help myself from doubting it. I know that Warhammer is on a massive scale, but it's still nothing compared to what exists in the galaxy. I believe it's been said that the imperium contains about a million worlds. That seems like a lot, because it is, but on a cosmic scale it's a tiny blip. Even if we're very generous and estimate that humanity rules 50 million worlds, that's still only about 0.05% of the 100 billion planets that we believe exist in the milky way. It's true that the crusade crushed essentially every race it encountered. But even if they fought on a hundred times as many planets as they ended up colonizing/ruling, they didn't see a percent of what the galaxy contains. This kind of thing is an issue in a lot of Warhammer lore for me. These wars might be bigger than we can imagine, but if you really think about it the existance of the imperium should be fairly inconsequential to most races in the galaxy.

And like I said, I don't want this to be the case, I love Warhammer and it's ridiculous scale as much as any other fan. That's why things like this are pretty immersion breaking to me. I'd love to hear more thought on it though, it's possible that the numbers I remember are just inaccurate.

@@svahn1 no probably not, but if it were true about 2million and probably well over or around 1.5 million casualties throughout the crusade era alone. Every marine would be a master against every alien. Even Eldar worlds, well into millions would be broken by astartes numbering 100k in a month or less

I hate the new GW Plastics. It makes no sense that everyone has Mark 6, besides trying to appeal to Rogue Trader Nostalgia. Mark 6 is supposed to be very very rare outside the Raven Guard, the Alpha Legion that stole it from them, and MAYBE the Sons of Horus that probably bullied it out from them. Most Legions wouldn't want it, it's too expensive to make compared to Mark 5 Heresy, it doesn't offer as much protection as Mark 3, 4, and maybe even 5, and finally; they need as many Astartes in "Good Enough" suits, not "experimental, expensive streamlined suits for stealth operations".

How big is the Imperium? If its only a million worlds strung together by warp travel the Imperium is tiny but spread out.

Oh course not. But I could just say it all in High Gothic. How great, but impossible to understand. Authenticity vs enjoyment. They’re not always the sane thing. Just replace our colloquialism fir a 40k one. Otherwise it gets veeeerry drab writing this stuff. :(
