Call me tight ... But all I can think about is how much cheaper ( and better ingredients) a home made batch of pies would be
@jackwaycombe
@jackwaycombe 3 ай бұрын
To be honest, mate, I don't think you'll make a cottage pie with butcher meat, decent veg and potatoes, as cheap as a supermarket ready meal, even at current quite outrageous prices. But - with quality ingredients - you WILL get a pie that isn't ... how can I put it ... CRAP!!! Doesn't even need to take that much longer, in terms of personal time. Tip for the really keen. Chop the taties small, so they're ready to mash in 10 minutes. DON'T stint on the butter - and bugger the doctors - these days I use garlic ghee. A tablespoon of Bailey's Irish Cream - most of it will cook off but you'll still get a hint. When the whole thing is in the oven, pull it out 5 minutes early, shred some parmesan over the top and put it back. You'll never touch supermarket crap again. And you won't want to swap your plate with King Charlie...

oooh garlic ghee! I agree with what you're saying to a fair extent, but you can be smart and make it economically better and food quality better. Takes smarts and a love for cooking. Bought Frozen meals are good to a point. Your own meals frozen are another subject

I can't bring myself to buy these ready meals with all the additives. I batch cook in a slow cooker,divide into portions and freeze. Love your vids. In these cost conscious times wise food shopping is essential and it shows just how much big brands rip us off. Have you thought occasionally about cooking a simple homemade version and including it in the comparison. I’ve started making some dishes and freezing 3 or 4 portions. It really brings the price down to comparable with the cheapest bought version AND tastes better than it would even from M&S! What’s more I’d love to see your cooking skills! I can remember the Asda Smart Price Cottage Pie was always under £1 (as were a lot of their ready meals) and it didn't seem that long ago it was still only 90p, so it's gone up considerably and is why I stopped buying it. Their chips in curry sauce is still only 90p though. I agree - the Asda definitely needs salt and pepper or it can be a bit bland.

@@Matt19matt19 It doesn't seem to come up on my online list, just the £1.40 one so I thought it had just gone up in price. Having Googled it, it is still there as you say, just not available in my area by the looks of things, which is disappointing because I've been buying it for years. It still shows as a favourite and I can add it to my list, just can't add it to basket and buy it. Bummer. Thanks for pointing that out.

Excellent video as always BFG. To be honest they all looked a bit too watery for my delicate palate. I prefer the mince with a bit of body to it. OT I buy my Billington sugar for £2 and Twinings Breakfast tea from Asda. I was in Sainsbury's looking to see if they had any Twinings Breakfast tea on offer. I happen to pass the sugar self, and to my astonishment, their Billington sugar was a whooping £2.45!!! How can Sainsbury's justify a 45p difference? The customer is being well and truly ripped off. To rub salt into the wound one of the Sainsbury's clan has donated £1million to the f******* Liebore party. Boycott f******* Sainsbury's.

Hey, love this channel (just subscribed), I find it really interesting. Just as an observation as someone from Australia visiting the UK, I am astounded by how you guys here buy things like this. It all looks pretty gross to be honest. Went to Tesco last week and 2 whole aisles of this type of garbage in the chilled and frozen. People walking around with trolley full of it. How hard is it to peel potatoes and cook some meat folks? I even saw pre made mash and pre cut veg...why? Can't you Brits its cook or something? This stuff just doesn't get sold where I live, we make stuff from fresh ingredients. I have seen frozen lasagne in Australia and the odd frozen Chinese and we call them 'loser meals'. I love seeing what not to buy and total respect for you risking yourself all in the name of research. Surely heating all this stuff up in plastics and all the preservatives must be awful for you? Anyway good luck and thanks for the entertainment and research it's been a culture shock. 😀

You can get bags of frozen mashed potato, which I keep a stock of. I sometimes go to my nearest Tesco and check the ‘discounted items’ fridge and there is usually a tray or two of beef mince, or steak mince or lamb mince (nothing wrong with it, just has to be used immediately). Can get that for half price or more. So I can make a home made cottage/shepherds pie for about £2, which will also have any leftover veg in, and it’s gorgeous! I’d never go back to pre-made ones again…. Also, meat content of mine will always be over 50%! No contest, really.

I always have a bag of mash in my freezer. Saves a lot of time peeling,cooking etc. Aunty Bessie is the best and cheapest of them all. Maybe store bought meals are fine but thy don't taste like home mash. Enjoyed watching your show and will be back . Mollie.x

Aldi's gastro cottage pie is the best now, used to be m&s cottage pie gastro pub but they changed the ingredients and wrote improved recipe on the front. It's dreadful now.

The store selection must have taken you a wee while based on your previous comments! The new (for me) usual sharp observations of weight, percentages, ingredients, and ease of the "seal & peel" tests have got to be a unique examination, invented and presented only by you! The progs. are compulsive, entertaining, and essential viewing, as there is nowt like this anywhere! I've never tried using my pee water but will give it a try and report back. Would you ever consider doing a live whisky comparison? You don't look like a boozer, but with a few of your soldier mates would be interesting to saddos like me! I will share your site with as many people as I know. Looking forward to Frki.18/11/22 at 8pm. Enuff smoke blowing from me, just a tad concerned with the cross-contamination mentioned! VBW x

I'm glad that you've never tried using your pee water, that would be disgusting! 😝 I would suggest that you try using your pea water though, as Gareth said, it helps to add pleasant sweeter flavour. 😋

If you're comparing like for like, the Asda normal range, not Essentials, is 24% beef and costs £3. Most likely it will taste better than the Essentials.

Would be useful, but not easy, to make a pie from ingredients as my wife does. It would contain far more beef and a higher quality ( 5% fat) . But to cost it would be not simple and of course you have to put the time in. But I prefer my wife's.

Just thought I'd add what happened with my Tesco Cottage Pie last dinner time - it was horrible. The potatoes were sloppy and had no seasoning at all and the meat had a LOT of peas in (which I am allergic to) and the little meat there was had a lot of gristle and what seemed like sin in. I won't be buying them again.

When making my own Cottage pie I'd say the beef content should be about 40%. 15-25% is a bit naff

Hi.. interesting stuff, but it's much cheaper and healthier to teach people and encourage them to cook to these themselves. They will save money and get far better nutrition. These processed foods are packed with rubbish.

For the "seal peel" I've found put things like that in the oven with the seal on and then peel them after they've been in for couple of minutes, they come right off cleanly and a couple of minutes in the oven with the seal on makes not difference to the cooking.

For anything savoury thats bland Worcester sauce is the answer. I often pierce the top of a lasagne and give it a good slash of Worcester sauce. Liquid magic. I never put in curry though, for that there is Sriracha sauce.

I like the longer videos Gareth. I personally like the Tesco Cottage Pie as the mince is bigger and it’s not very peppery. The Aldi one is ok but just a tad too much pepper for my taste. I tried the Bisto Pigs in Blankets gravy the other day, would be interesting to know what you think of it?

Just subscribed. Would you please include Lidl in your next comparison, if you can. We shop mainly @ Lidl & Aldi. Your Chanel very useful please keep up the good work. Christmas is coming, any Christmas special food items you want to compare would be interesting, last year my wife picked -up some Very Special Tesco Christmas festive food and we were not impressed. Over priced, over packaging no flavour. we would like to cook more from basic but with us both working full time, the convenience of cooking a ready made meal that is , tasty & value for money is a big hit with the family as you are aware. Reg Neil ps. I will ask the wife what she would like you to compare try and get back to you.

I never buy them, they all look so small. A cottage pie is so easy to make and I can add whatever I want to it - usually just peas and always onion. Mine are much better taste and value.
