I agree.I went to M & S food hall in Doncaster a week ago and walked out empty handed first time ever. I object to paying their now exorbitant prices AND smaller portions. I normally spend quite a bit when I go albeit not on a very regular basis due to their higher prices but nicer quality. Until now! Shame I doubt Ill be going again as I expect with many others. Youre proving my point in the two M & S pies/pudding. Thanks for your input and good down to earth honest reviews.

I think a lot of businesses (not just M&S) are being greedy and increasing their profits under the disguise of the cost of living crisis. If more ppl were like you and refused to buy overpriced goods then I’m sure prices would fall.

The e next to the weight means it has a tolerance. Different items/weight bands have different tolerances. It's unlikely to be exactly the weight stated, but look up the bands for different food types.

Another great review. Fully agree with your opinion. 200g should be pie weight and filling should be mean close to full. £3 for a pie that's half air just doesn't sit well even if it does taste great.

Im with you on "where is the filling" its happened with various brands over time, i want a pie with no fresh air layer at the top but it seems hard at times even though a box shows a different story.

I agree entirely. There should be a small gap that allows a layer of hor air to form which cooks the underside of the pastry dry, but anything less than about three quarters full is just taking liberties.

Interested to hear this, as social media has been talking about M&S as if everything they touch turns to gold over the past few months. From ‘their veg lasts ten times longer than anyone else’ to ‘it’s actually just as cheap as the other supermarkets’. People are crazy. They charge FIVE POUNDS for an individual curry, eg madras - not some extra special range, just a bog standard curry. And you know what, it’s no nicer than one from Aldi, Asda or anywhere else. It’s amazing what some nice packaging and a nice shopping environment can do to your mindset

I don't care for pies out of boxes and if I want one, I make it from scratch. But well done for checking this out and especially the weight, as manufacturers and supermarkets need calling out on what exactly they mean when they state a product weight. Yes, and where was the chicken, where were the mushrooms? This pie is no more than a comfort snack. I can buy an entire cooked chicken for £4.50! Never mind if it's your opinion. You are so right. Companies are making themselves rich on our lazy habits. But come on Gareth, it's really naughty eating yours in a muffin! 😄

Yeah we are being ripped off constantly from every angle possible and always have been but lately it's like they are just pushing us to see how much we can take, also that sticker on the front says 'supporting British suppliers' unfortunately that isn't the farmers, these are just mere supply companies. If you want to support local farmers and businesses then buy from your local Butchers and Veg shops. I started this last year and the savings are UNREAL !!! Honestly. As a single guy I spend an average of around £100 per Month at the Butchers, they do various packs and mix and match things on their website and that lasst me more than the month and the Veg shop is usually a tenner a week. So my food for the month went from around £450 per month to around £200 ish by the time I buy condiments, bread, coffee etc from Aldi's, Honestly people look into it, freeze your meat and take out what you need in the morning (set a meat alarm on your phone) as I often forget in the morn 😵‍💫

Sadly, this shrinkflation has been going on for years, and M&S are by no means alone, nor the worst. Pie, pastie, sausage roll and "savoury bake" fillings are getting smaller, less meaty and the pastry is getting thicker. I've also noticed that supermarket Scotch Eggs have smaller eggs rattling around inside their sausage-meat casings, and cheese pasties have less cheese and are padded out with cheaper ingredients like mashed potato and onion. Rip-off Britain, indeed.

Ingredients - chicken bones. 1) Is this covering themselves in case a bone gets stuck in ones throat? 2) I'm getting suspicious about companies "padding out ingredients". So are bones being ground up to pad out the filling now. It's not a ridiculous idea as we are being told that bugs will be ground up and added to our food. 3) Under weight - People weighing food contents? - Nah, whose gonna do that? The bald Foodie Guy will - Hurrah. 4) Only 2/3 full. 5) £3 for that - forget it.

The 'e' sign next to the weight means its an average weight because there is no way to ensure every individual pie is exactly 200g. However, I will admit that your pie is right at the limits of what's reasonable, really 10g should be enough imho.

Great review again Gareth 👍👍. When you first took the pie from the box? I thought it was a nice size and it was going to be at least 9 1/2 out of 10. The lack of filling, especially chicken, made it between 1 and 5 in my opinion. It certainly was not worth £3 of anyones money. It's not like chicken costs a fortune, even with today's price hikes being what they are. 🥴🥴. When I occasionally have a pie, either chicken or steak, I get the Lidl or Aldi family pie which will last me two days at least. The cost is well under £3, so good value as well. Keep up the good work and keep the reviews rolling in.

Again, the pastry looks okay mate, but I agree with you: the pie looks mostly pastry and mushrooms - both being really cheap ingredients for the manufacturer to use. The more expensive bit - the chicken - is obvious by it's absence. As nice as the pie may taste, paying £3 for a mushroom & pastry pie (the ingredients of which probably cost about 5p in the bulk numbers they're produced) makes it all a bit of a rip off to me. We're paying more and more for this sort of stuff at the moment, but getting less and less for our money at the same time. Good review again though - thanks. Regards, Dave

I wouldn't be surprised if they count the box in the nutritional info, that would reduce the fat content and increase the fibre, lol. The letter e next to the 200g means estimated weight I think.

Hi Gareth I see you took my comment on board & put that pie in between a nice buttered roll & chowed down? Lol. Best way to have a pie if it's lacking in filling but just tastes ok in my opinion. I know I spoke about trying the real pie company in my last comment to you. One thing I will say is that they are a family business, started off life as a butchers shop that made a variety of pies weekly, which were always on hot demand from their local customers & sold out everytime. When the owners decided to retire/pass the business down that's when the family decided to keep to the pie selling side of the business through it's popularity & it really took off. I know by the sounds of it you must love a good pie, the M&S ones looked like diced up mush inside & you have to send a search party out to find the ingredients lol. I can honestly say that if you give the real pie company a whirl you will be surprised to find massive chunks of beef brisket or pure white chicken breast & no matter if it's mushroom or leeks within the pie also you definitely see them in abundance to. I know they're on the pricier side but not much more than you paid for the M&S ones that looked a bit of a let down to be honest. Ok Gareth I'll shut me gob now about pies lol. Have a lovely Sunday & keep doing what you're doing. All the best & please don't apologise about not being able to answer everyone's comment, I'm sure we can all see that you try your very best to. You're in the minority of youtubers that do heart a comment never mind taking the time to leave a nice reply. Have a good one.

It's means with all the packaging a rip off. Really which makes me mad ,I really believe we must teach our kids to cook for themselves with all the shortages coming we will have less convenience foods,I am lucky I am 80 and born 1943 my granny taught me to cook by helping her she never wasted a thing could turn anything into a meal I taught both my kids to cook and of course they had cookery at school not so now I don't think,

Just cant seem to find a decently filled pie these days even Pukka who was my absolute go to have now changed the recipe and dont give you as much filling yet the price has increased dramatically unless you get them on offer occasionally,The best pie i ever had was Steak and Mushroom pie from Netto back in the day,It was absolutely filled to the brim,Chunks of Beef,Chunky Mushrooms,Sadly cant get them anymore since Nettos demise but guaranteed Mr Bald Foodie Guy would have loved it!

Honestly Gaz, you don’t have to apologise for not replying to every comment when you have so many followers. Most of the the content creators on KZbin don’t! It’s near on impossible to do so as your channel is constantly growing. I’m sure the vast majority of your followers on here understand that and don’t expect a reply to every comment they add, I certainly don’t. If you reply to everyone, you’ll miss the one’s that you really need to answer! ❤️

To be fair to all brands most of what they produce will be factory made, it would be extremely difficult to always be bang on the weight on the packaging. Though I do think they should err on the upside. It would be interesting if you pulled out all the chicken and weighed it to see if it really matches the percentage stated? Certainly wasn't good value for what it cost.
