Bob Mortimer, what a great bloke. He's the type of guy you'd just love to have as a friend. Can you imagine going to the pub with him? It'd be a laugh a minute. Never heard of using mayonnaise like that before, I've made something similar using eggs though. Maybe, if you tried frying both slices on one side first, put cheese on the fried part, made the sandwich with the fried bit inside and then fried the outer side, you'd get even more crunch.

Another great post, Gareth. I use mayonnaise a lot because I can't stand the texture of butter on cold things. I usually add a spoonful to my sc rambled eggs before I cook them, it makes them lovely and creamy. I also use it on the outside of the bread when I do a toastie. I might just have added some branston or Worcestershire sauce to the cheese. All the best.👍

@featheredfriend1711 I had butter on things until I was eight, but I had a sandwich one day and was physically sick, and I didn't have anything with butter on it for years, I then found I could eat it melted on toast, baked potatoes etc. I had the same problem with vegetable spreads. I'm used to it now after sixty one years.

Extra tip when making those - fry all sides. So butter or mayonaise (or whatever) all sides - put both slices in the pan. When browned flip them both - add your cheese. Put the other slice on top then brown the other sides, Cheese will melt during the process and frying 4 sides makes it mega crunchy, Oh and sandwiches MUST be sliced diagonally - that's why in the shops they are always in triangle packs !!

We have always used mayonnaise on our toasted cheese sandwiches. My wife also makes the mayonnaise from scratch. If you have a food processor, you can do the same. Mayonnaise, without the chemicals tastes so much better than the store bought. And home made is much healthier. I like your choice of cheese, aged cheddar is much more flavoursome. Thanks for sharing as always.

This is similar to how i make cheese toastie without a cheese toasty machine except i use butter instead of mayo and i put the butter side down in pan, on left slice of bread - put square cheese on top of the white bread, then add grated cheese on top of the square cheese, and on the right slice of bread put square cheese on it, then flip over the right side onto the left side so you have the cheese in middle, then just flip it over now and then til outside of bread is browned enough to your taste, cheese melts like a toastie machine,, hope i explained it so you follow what am trying to say. ::)

I've seen this on other KZbin channels, it's an American idea. The thing to remember is that you can't use light mayonnaise because it's made with water, it's the oil from the mayonnaise that cooks it so basically it is a fried bread sandwich. The yanks don't flip the first piece with the cheese on it they flip it once the second piece of bread is on!

Sometimes you can use your imagination and end up with great Sarnie. This was a great lesson in cooking. For me? A cheese sandwich has taken on a whole new level. Many years ago I would make the family a ' Welsh Rarebit ' for supper. Anyone who's had it knows how tasty it was. I would add my own spin on it, so I guess it was just a plain ' Rarebit '. I haven't made one for years. That might change soon thanks to this recipe, ( I'm certainly going to give it a go ). Thank you Gareth for showing something new and something easily done at home. 👍👍.
